Azusa, Lost in Ramping

Commander / EDH Mono-Green Ramp

Maybeboard

Azusa

Azusa: Ramp Ramp Ramp.

OVERVIEW

Latest Update: Ixalan Block: Ixalan (XLN), Rivals of Ixalan (RIX)

Build: Competitive

Style: Ramp, Midrange

Theme: Land Ramp, Landfall, Fatty Creatures

Basic Concept: Ramp as quickly as possible to cast big fat creatures like Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, Void Winnower, Blightsteel Colossus, etc. At the maxed out level, you would be able 5 lands per turn. Deck also utilises creatures with Enter the Battlefield / Landfall abilities to disrupt the board and deal with difficult situations.

Like all green decks, it resolves around fatty creatures. For this build, I have included some Eldrazis into this build as they are quite strong.

Pros

  • It can be Fast and Aggro
  • Has plenty of fat creatures

Cons

  • No flying creatures

STRATEGY

Ramp as fast as possible to get enough mana to play big creatures.
Ramp fast with things like Cultivate, Nissa's Pilgrimage and get Azusa, Lost but Seeking onto the battlefield to play extra lands.

The deck is filled with some Creature Searching mechanism (Natural Order, Chord of Calling, Green Sun's Zenith, Tooth and Nail) so that you can deal with different situations.

  1. Win by trampling over your opponent(s) with creatures.
  2. Win with Shaman of Forgotten Ways. This deck can have big fat creatures on the board quite quickly and you can easily turn your opponent's life to less than 5 and attack with creatures on the battlefield for the win.
  • As with all mono-green EDH decks, the lack of removals can be frustrating at times.

-Flyers. The deck is quite vulnerable against flying creatures so included few flyer stoppers such as Stingerfling Spider, Silklash Spider.

CARDS & COMBOS

Ramunap Excavator + Strip Mine + Titania, Protector of Argoth generate 5/3 elemental creatures whenever your land goes to graveyard, you can do so by sacrificing them (e.g. Strip Mine, Wasteland, Dust Bowl). In this case, you could potentially destroy 5 lands a turn. However, you probably wouldn't want to use this too often ;)

Constant Mists + Ramunap Excavator give you unlimited fogs

Oracle of Mul Daya - this gels really well in this deck as you may play the top card of your library if it is a land card. This means, you can play upto 4 lands per turn already with Oracle of Mul Daya and Azusa, Lost but Seeking on the board. That could be major card advantage.

Nissa, Vital Force - utility card which acts as an Eternal Witness if needed, but what we really want is the ultimate -6, to be able to draw cards whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control.

Natural Order, Chord of Calling, Green Sun's Zenith, Tooth and Nail

Fauna Shaman, Survival of the Fittest - very useful in both early game (search for ramp) and late game (search for finishers)

Woodland Bellower searches for non-lengendary creatures with converted mana of 3 or less. There are plenty of decent options: Eternal Witness, Reclamation Sage, Scavenging Ooze, Sylvan Safekeeper, Ramunap Excavator, Shaman of Forgotten Ways

Craterhoof Behemoth - classic finisher when you are tons of creatures on the battlefield. Took it out from this deck for the time being.

Blightsteel Colossus - mainly for infect purposes, but it would be key to make it unblockable.

Void Winnower - this is quite a headache for opponents to deal with because once it is on the battlefield, things are like Path to Exile can't deal with it.

Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger- definitely very useful in EDH to get extra mana and that your opponent can't untap their lands for 1 turn, right?

DECK BUILD

Sol Ring can be replaced by Mana Crypt. By having Mana Crypt, you can cast Azusa, Lost but Seeking on the 1st turn.

Nylea, God of the Hunt - is really good with making all your other creatures with trample and be able to attack easily in this deck but after a number of games, she doesn't do enough in most cases. Can reconsider putting her back in later.

Animist's Awakening - suits the theme of the deck but it is actually too slow

Melira, Sylvok Outcast - not that many people is playing infect in EDH so removed for the time being

Hornet Queen - effective against flyers but replaced with Sandwurm Convergence which seems a bit better

Duskwatch Recruiter   - is a good card but not too effective in this deck

Omnath, Locus of Mana - decent card to keep the green mana but generally isn't too useful in the deck

Gaea's Touch - already had too much land ramp, and not too useful in late game

Avenger of Zendikar - it is a very useful card in a lands deck but it is not strong enough as a finisher, better for a more casual build

Growing Rites of Itlimoc   - initially i thought it was good but after a few playtest, it is good but not great

Tireless Tracker - even though it has the correct theme, but it is rather slow and does not really do enough in this build

Horn of Greed - very good and fun card but better for a more casual build because the effect is for everyone. however, most of the time, you get a way more card advantage because you play a lot more lands per turn.
