In this short article I will discuss the followings about my Ayli Commander deck, which I was running for quite a few games recently and had a lot of fun an challenging games with the deck.

The topics discussed are the followings:

    • What is needed to build Around Ayli?

What is needed to build around Ayli?

Looking at our commander the most important ability is the second activated ability which is "1WB Sacrifice another creature. Exile target permanent", which we can only use if we have 10 or more life beyond our starting life total. To ensure Ayli's second ability is working our deck needs:

    • Disposible creatures either with utility when they die (Wurmcoil Engine) or tokens
    • Lot of lifegain effect to make sure we are meetign the 50 life treshold

What is the deck trying to do?

Our deck is trying to "Weaponize" the tools that are enabling our commander at the first place so it can win one of the following ways:

    • Sudden Death or Combokills: Felidar Souvereign + Vedalken Orrery, Sanguin Bond + Exquisite Blood, AetherFlux Reservoir
    • Swarm of Tokens: Crested Sunmare, Strom Herd, Army of the Damned
    • Play a traditional Midrange Game: taking over with cards like Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Wurmcoil Engine Recursion, Archangel of Thune, Blood Artist, while making our opponents sacrifice their bord for Grave Pact or Martyr's Bond

Stax Elements:

For the deck success it is inevitable that we have enough time to sort of set up shop, meaning that we can either pull of a combokill uncontested or just get our Ayli removal engine online and win the attrition battle. In order to achieve this we are trying to disincentivize people from attacking us by using cards such as Ghostly Prison, Authority of the Consuls, Blind Obedience, Righteous Aura

With regards to removal the deck is running 0 spot removal on purpose, because our commander is a "Vindicate" herself, therefore we are only interested in using mass removal effects, such as Grave Pact and Dictate of Erebos or Marty's Bond to decimate our opponent's board while we sacrifice only tokens, Martial Coup, Fumigate for Value and Merciless Eviction or Austere Command as a catch all.

Other Important Utility cards

In this category I think it is worth mentioning our recursive engines including Sun titan, Dawn of the Deam and Phyrexian reclamation which enables us to set up Value town by looping sacrifice into reanimate Wurmcoil Engines or haymakers such as Kokusho or Archangel of Thune. Sun titan let's us use all cheap creatures such as Blood Artist as an Ayli fodder and recurring them immediately after sacrificing.

Another part of this package is the two insane lifegain engine, namely Alhammarret's Archive and Eternity Vessel which can enable us to gain so much life that our opponent will be disincentivized to attack us going forward.

Sword of the Animist helps us bridge from the early game to the late game. Lately I have found myself tutoring for it most of the time before turn 4 becuase our commander is so cheap to recast that our opponents are rarely incentivize to trade a real card for it, therefore the sword can serve as a free ramp spell.

Trading post does everything this decks wants to do, gain life to get us closer to 50, provid tokens to be an Ayli fodder, recur our important artifact such as Aetherflux reservoir and Wurmcoli Engine, let's us convert hangarback walker tokens into live draws, it can truly be the heart of the deck in a grindy matchup.
