"When gods become apathetic, the people will worship anyone who answers their pleas."

~ Kiora, the Crashing Wave

After the destruction of Xenagos, God of Revels by the hands of Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Ajani, Mentor of Heroes the Gods of Theros locked themselves away from the affairs of mortals in the hope that no one could ever again ascend to Godhood as the treacherous satyr Xenagos, the Reveler once did.

Enchantments disappeared from the world and the Gods no longer answered the prayers of their followers, Nyx was silent from then on.

A force started to stir in the west, far greater than any in the known world, greater than even Heliod, God of the Sun himself. The Gods felt this presence and went to discover what could possibly challenge their power. The five Gods Heliod, God of the Sun, Thassa, God of the Sea, Erebos, God of the Dead, Purphoros, God of the Forge , and Nylea, God of the Hunt went to where the power source was radiating from only to find and ancient and desolate place called the Temple of the False God . They did not know it at the time, but they where too late.

After several millennia of slumber Karona, False God awoke from her temple with a mind full of deceit and treachery for Karona was not a God, but an unbelievably powerful sorceress with a lust for power.

Karona, False God confronted the mortals of Theros who immediately threw themselves at her feet in worship. The Gods had become apathetic to mortals because they feared a mortal may again ascend to Godhood, the irony being that in their apathy a mortal once again ascended to Godhood.

Seeing the need for action Heliod, God of the Sun went to war against this false god, each of the thirteen other Gods joined him in an alliance not seen since the days of old. The Gods called upon their followers to join them in their war against Karona, False God but none answered their call. They no longer swore fealty to the Old Gods, they only bowed to the One False God.

In a long and incredibility violent and bloody war the Gods fought the mortals that once worshiped them, but no matter the combined power of the Gods of Theros they where no match for the power of mortal faith. With Karona, False God leading the charge the mortals pushed back the Old Gods to the gates of Nyx itself.

The Gods exhausted and beaten still held their own for months at the gates of Nyx, it was a bloody stalemate where thousands of mortals were slain, not being able to hurt the Gods, yet the Gods could neither break through the shear amount of men assaulting Nyx.

Karona, False God learned of a legendary weapon called Godsend that the planeswalker Elspeth, Sun's Champion used to slay Xenagos, God of Revels, she knew that this weapon could turn the tide of the war and give her what she desired: ultimate power. With her immense knowledge of the arcane arts Karona, False God summoned Godsend to her from time itself.

Now with a weapon to fight the Gods with Karona, False God called back her armies and confronted the fourteen Gods alone. Wielding Godsend she incapacitated the entire Theros pantheon in a battle that will be recounted to eons after.

With Godsend by her side Karona, False God did not slay the Gods, but rather took Heliod, God of the Sun's place as the head of the pantheon. With her immense power and a god-killing artifact, none of the Gods could challenge her.

As one last precaution to secure herself as the most powerful being on Theros, Karona, False God set five decrees into motion, the Decree of Justice , the Decree of Silence , the Decree of Pain , the Decree of Annihilation, and the Decree of Savagery . These new divine laws must be upheld by both God and mortal. If they were broken the offender will have to face the full power of the False God.

So it was, and so it has ever been. This is the story of the Fall of the Old Pantheon and the Rise of the False God. She sits there still, on the throne of Nyx, with fourteen Gods below her, the supreme being of Theros, and the One True God.
