My friends keep telling me how much the "Awaken" mechanic sucks because it is too expensive and turning lands into vanilla creatures is too risky. So I'm building an awakened deck centered around putting counters on indestructible land.

The Plan

Bounce my opponent's creatures and sift through my deck until I get an indestructible land and/or a lord.

The Cards

Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper : Pretty much the "lord" of the awakened mechanic.

Talrand, Sky Summoner : Works like an alternative to Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper to make sure I get a creature when I play an instant or sorcery.

Halimar Tidecaller : A single copy for a late game answer or possibly a chance to replay a spell for it's awakened cost. Giving my lands the ability to fly is helpful too.

AEtherize//AEtherspouts//Into the Roil//Vapor Snag: These stall my opponents in the early game, while clearing the way for me to swing with a big land creature mid/late game. azorious charm has bonus flexibility late game.

Clutch of Currents // Roil Spout //Azorius Charm : I picked these specifically because of their flexibility. They are really good early game and work even better late game.

Darksteel Citadel + Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper + Roil Spout = a 7/7 indestructible elemental with "enters the battlefield bounce your opponent's biggest threat."

Telling Time// Temple of Enlightenment // Foresee : Sift through my deck for the cards I need.

Darksteel Citadel// Terra Eternal : Makes the awaken much harder to deal with. Terra Eternal is essentially a fifth copy of Darksteel Citadel. I never want to draw more than one copy.

Sideboard

Day of Judgment : The poor man's Wrath of God (not that WoG is as expensive as it used to be), but still very good. There's only seven creatures in this deck, so chances are my opponent is going to lose more than I am.

Return to Dust : There are cheaper alternatives out there, but exiling two artifacts or enchantments for each casting allows me to save some deck space for other utilities.

Sword of Vengeance : Indestructible not enough? How about First Strike, Vigilance, Trample, and Haste? Equip now and get an additional +2/+0.

Timely Reinforcements : For really fast decks or burn decks.

Veil of Secrecy : Perfect for protecting Darksteel Citadel or any of the lords. Making Darksteel Citadel unblockable is pretty gross too. Splicing is unlikely to happen, but with the token generation in this deck, splicing would practically be free.
