Avacyn Condemned (4.0)

Commander / EDH RW (Boros)

TheHat2

Avacyn has fallen, and she's taking you with her.

This is the fourth major revision of this deck. The original was a rough build, mostly Boros Goodstuff. Second revision focused on flavor, prominently featuring Nahiri, the Harbinger and Emrakul, the Promised End, as well as shenanigans with Ugin's Nexus. The third was centralized around getting Archangel Avacyn   out and getting her flipped. This one is a combination of both the second and third revisions, going for that flavor win while trying to get out a win.

Avacyn, the Purifier + Basilisk Collar . Avacyn flips, bolts everything and everyone, gains the life from it, AND wipes the board clean with Deathtouch. Ouch.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope + Worldslayer . Make your permanents indestructible, remind your opponents that their permanents are destructible. This sometimes ends games on its own.

Aurelia, the Warleader + Helm of the Host . Copy Aurelia, get infinite combat phases. Again, again!

Helm of Obedience + Rest in Peace . Exile another player's library for one mana and a tap. Wait, this is legal?

1) The Voltron method. Flip to Avacyn, the Purifier, load her up with equipment, and swing for commander damage.

2) Aurelia, the Warleader + Helm of the Host for pure combat damage.

3) Helm of Obedience + Rest in Peace to mill/exile opponents to death.

In my experience, Archangel Avacyn   typically doesn't get hated out, but is also the slowest path to victory. The other two primary combos are great, but once people realize what you're doing, those pieces will be targeted for removal.

Archangel Avacyn   can be flashed in, but doesn't always need to be played this way. Flashing her in as a response to a boardwipe is always good, and typically the only time I do it. Generator Servant can bring her out on turn 3 with haste, with the added bonus of flipping her afterward.

There are a few options to get Avacyn to flip. The deck runs some non-Angel creatures that naturally sacrifice themselves: Keening Apparition, Selfless Spirit, Cathar Commando, and the aforementioned Generator Servant. Tutor them with Recruiter of the Guard or Imperial Recruiter. If you can't get those auto-sac creatures, kill another with High Market.

So after you've flipped Avacyn into Avacyn, the Purifier, what do you do? Stack her with equipment, of course! Open the Armory and Stoneforge Mystic will help you with this. Sigarda's Aid also helps with equip costs and gives it all flash. Basilisk Collar should be found and equipped BEFORE flipping Avacyn. Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Feast and Famine need no introduction. Darksteel Plate and Swiftfoot Boots for protection. Commander's Plate and Champion's Helm for more protection and damage. Worldslayer does dumb things. Open the Vaults or Buried Ruin if your stuff gets destroyed.

How else do you win with Commander damage if you can't assemble your equipment? Duelist's Heritage helps with double strike, as does Boros Charm, albeit temporarily. Gratuitous Violence doubles the damage opponents would take. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight does, too. Aurelia, the Warleader doubles your combat phases. Doubling all around, and it's not even Doubling Season!

There are a couple of melding options, too. Bruna, the Fading Light   and Gisela, the Broken Blade   combine to form Brisela, Voice of Nightmares    . What's that? You don't want your opponents to play cheap spells? Brisela has a cure for that! Plus, she hits like a train full of trucks. Hanweir Garrison   and Hanweir Battlements   form Hanweir, the Writhing Township    . Get it attacking and get some free Eldrazi guys.

Thalia's Lancers can fetch any legendary permanent, so use it to get to Bruna, the Fading Light   or Gisela, the Broken Blade   to meld them, or get the Aurelia, the Warleader and Helm of the Host combo started. Can also fetch Geier Reach Sanitarium if you need a land that badly, Nahiri, the Harbinger if you need that extra support, and Emrakul, the Promised End if youmrakul.

Cloudshift is the cheapest flicker you can get. Use it to fetch more stuff with ETB triggers, or to restore Avacyn when you need your creatures to be indestructible. If you want to get stupid, give her Worldslayer, and flicker her in response to its trigger.

Sometimes, you need to get rid of problems. Avacyn can't do it alone. Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares take care of creatures. Descend upon the Sinful and Blasphemous Act take care of lots of creatures. Armageddon destroys lands and exiles friends. Lightning Helix is around in case you need it, as are Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile. Wear / Tear and Shattering Spree are here for destroying artifacts and enchantments, but Shattering Blow is also available for particular nuisances. Vandalblast is also an option for Overload, if needed. Chaos Warp can be used to hit other things, or you could use it on yourself and pray really hard for a combo piece.

There are also some good pieces to shut down your opponents. Spirit of the Labyrinth and Containment Priest tell combo decks to knock it off. Sanctum Prelate primarily stops creature-heavy decks and a few cEDH combo pieces. Thalia, Heretic Cathar and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben slow opponents down. Blood Moon their lands not work. Leyline of Punishment ensures that Avacyn will bolt them. I mentioned Rest in Peace as part of a combo, but it can also be used to shut off graveyard-based strategies.

And for the obvious leftovers: Angel's Grace saves your game. Selfless Squire aborbs some damage and occasionally saves your game. Land Tax gets you land. Knight of the White Orchid sometimes gets you land. Mana Tithe is your one counterspell, so use it wisely. Reforge the Soul and Faithless Looting to draw cards. Tamiyo's Journal gives you Clues and can tutor for anything later.

Is that everything? I think that's everything.
