Athre-oh-no (Standard MTG Deck)

This deck is essentially aimed around showing people how stupid Athreos, God of Passage can get. It utilizes his unique ability along with some awesome recyclable cards such as Brain Maggot and High Priest of Penance to force difficult decisions on your opponent early game, and then closes it out with fatties like Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Desecration Demon.

This deck essentially has no terrible match-ups. Cards like Drown in Sorrow and Bile Blight in the main board make dealing with aggro pretty easy, not to mention having such big beaters in the deck and a ton of lifegain. Control isn't too much of a threat, especially because you have Athreos himself to bleed them out, and a ton of hand control to deal with their annoyances. This deck also utilizes white, which makes it easy to sideboard in utilities like Glare of Heresy and Deicide to deal with their Planeswalkers and Enchantments.

As a closer, this deck is incredibly rotation friendly. I got the idea by observing how other players utilize Athreos, and realizing that there will always be cards that really make use of his ability.

SCG Open NJ and Game Day! — May 25, 2014

So, here's what went down; I took the current build to the SCG Open in New Jersey and did alright, I went 3-3, but had to drop at the end of the sixth round. I realized the deck was missing something right there, but I couldn't put my finger on it. That's when it hit me. I saw the decklist that the winner posted on SCG's website, and I found that Elspeth, Sun's Champion fits perfectly within the deck. I took out an Athreos, God of Passage and a Brain Maggot, and wouldn't ya know it, I got fourth place at my store's Game Day. I'm going to continue to tinker with the deck and keep it updated! Thanks for 20 score guys!
