I really like this deck +1 from me. I can see that you're wanting to act more at instant speed however I might suggest Fumigate over Engulf the Shore just for the life gain and actual removal that pseudo-removal. I know it can't be flashbacked by the hulk, but I'd prefer actually killing things than bouncing them. Plus life gain can off set any early creature damage before removal or creatures are played.

Thanks for the comment and the upvote Purple_Mage, glad you like it :)!

The deck tries to play as many instants as possible due to getting as much value out of Torrential Gearhulk, but there are some very powerful sorceries I just cannot not play!

I get what you are saying. I might put Engulf the Shore in the sideboard. Depends on how the meta shapes.

I'm considering adding Blessed Alliance and Declaration in Stone instead of Stasis Snare because it gets hit by Cataclysmic Gearhulk. Thoughts?

Declaration in Stone is definitely nice because it can take out many tokens in one shot. Blessed Alliance also sounds nice, especially when recasting it with Torrential Gearhulk. You might want to sideboard Skywhaler's Shot since it doesn't hit everything. Maybe replace it with Select for Inspection? Ceremonious Rejection could also be a good inclusion against vehicle decks in you're worried about the meta.

Eldrazi Displacer could also be interesting here.

Declaration in Stone is now added instead of Stasis Snare. I might put Stasis Snare in the sideboard since it deals with Gideon, Ally of Zendikar which I have a feeling is gonna get played more now since it combats vehicles well. Blessed Alliance is going to replace Immolating Glare. The only downside is you still have to pay escalate cost if you flash it back with Torrential Gearhulk :(

Select for Inspection feels more like tempo card. I think its good and for sure I could use it instead of Skywhaler's Shot, but hear me out. I really like Skywhaler's Shot because it hits R/W Vehicles really hard. It stops Toolcraft Exemplar, Veteran Motorist, Depala, Pilot Exemplar and most importantly it stops Smuggler's Copter which you hit before combat after they crew it + all played vehicles as well.

Eldrazi Displacer could work, but then I would have to go more into a creature based route and then i'd rather play Spirits tbh. It just gets worse when you play Fumigate and Cataclysmic Gearhulk

It's still very early to nail in the choices, but I think this version could be quite competitive!

JeppeFugl yeah that all makes sense. Vehicle aggro is a big nemesis for control, and you're right the Skywhaler's Shot hits it all. No real need for Eldrazi Displacer in this list for sure.

Hey, sorry it took me a while to reply, but I'd definitely suggest Blessed Alliance. It has helped me so much in my deck Summoning Metal as it gains life early game, but also gets around hexproof creatures such as hydra's or Lumbering Falls.

October 7, 2016 6:57 a.m. Edited.

Fugl says... #8

Yeah it's either Immolating Glare or Blessed Alliance. IG has the upside that you can hit excatly what you want, but Blessed has a ton of more options mid and late game that in some situations might alter the match in other ways than just hitting a creature, and I feel Skywhaler's Shot is sufficient removal for this deck. Can always sideboard in more direct removal :)

I wish Refurbish was an instant when I see a deck like this +1

Rabid_Wombat Yeah! So many good sorceries I would have loved to be instants.. Oh well would be a bit to OP in some cases..

Looking at your Mana Base, you might consider taking out the Meandering River as they come into play tapped regardless. Your base looks a little Blue light comparing your colored symbols, I'd play 3 Island and 1 Plains in their place.

Fugl says... #12

HubHikari Thanks for the comment. You are right, the mana base is a little off. I'm gonna play test with your suggestions for a little while. This deck needs to get to 2 blue mana sources turn 3 (for Void Shatter) and 2 white sources by turn 5 (Fumigate). I think this mana base could work as it is now. I was considering 4x Aether Hub, but only having Glimmer of Genius to fuel seems a little dangerous

Rabid_Wombat says... #13

If you maybe dropped Scatter to the Winds and the 3x Void Shatter for 3x Horribly Awry and another Negate you could concentrate on getting those Plains on the table and just function off the one blue mana source if required.

HubHikari says... #14

With the varying types of spells that are being cast in this Standard meta, narrowing counters is an awful idea. Horribly Awry is way too focused for a functional counter with all of the big creatures being cast right now, Gearhulks and Avacyn for example. As someone who plays these colors in Standard currently, saving (not really) 1 Blue on a counter isn't doing any justice if they are casting a fat creature or any other spell. Negate is a great spell because it's a 2 cast and you can save it for their board wipes and big artifacts.

Fugl says... #15

I think that Horribly Awry is a good card against specific decks Rabid_Wombat. I could see myself playing it against certain aggro decks, but as HubHikari said it is very narrow. Negate can counter so many things: Enchantments, planeswalkers, instants, sorceries and artifacts (Smuggler's Copter..). It would be nice to lower the average cmc and not being reliant on getting 2 blue mana sources by turn 3, but you need hard counters with control like Void Shatter and Scatter to the Winds

We will see after this weekends Pro Tour which direction control needs to take. I've seen several deck run Horribly Awry, so I wouldn't categorically exclude it just yet.

Rabid_Wombat says... #16

Boros Aggro and Boros Dwarves are this decks biggest weakness imho Horribly Awry counters every creature in those decks!

Normally, of course it would be a sideboard card but times are changing. Running a couple of Horribly Awry allow you to get some tempo back from the faster decks in the early-mid game before you can control the board. And this way you can save Skywhaler's Shot and Immolating Glare for opposing Gearhulks etc..

Rabid_Wombat True. I will test this weekend and watch what happens on the pro tour. If everyone starts playing R/W aggro Horribly Awry could go mainboard.

Love the idea of hulking in spells!

Also, was wondering as to what code you used for your spoiler boxes?

I'd suggest cutting 1 Jace for flexible removal like Stasis Snare or a counterspell like Ceremonious Rejection or Negate. Jace is a bit expensive.

YoungBen13: Thanks for the suggestion. It's a really good card and got a playset laying around. Inniatial thoughts are that it's more a tempo card. It dosn't really fit in this build, but it could end in the sideboard for contorl mirror matches! I will test it out.

BoCaliv: Yeah and it's really fun to pilot! On the spoiler boxes. Just remove the dots i've added in text and it should work out for you :)

-Ocean-: Jace, Unraveler of Secrets is also a card I would side out for Stasis Snare if I'm meeting a aggro deck. Its expensive, but has great options (card draw, support and a fast ultimate).

Thanks for the comments, and please it would be very helpful if you could give the deck a +1!

I would maybe go down to 25 or 24 lands. In playtesting I often found myself flooded more than anything else.

October 20, 2016 1:53 p.m.

Fugl says... #23

Dredge4life Thanks for the comment and upvote man. I appreciate it. Yeah flooding happens some times, but with this type of decks it's really important to hit land each turn, since this decks curves out at 6. Cards like Glimmer of Genius and Anticipate help filtering. I can see going to 25 would be okay if it's for an Anticipate, but 24 is to low.

Hi,

Could you update the description ?A lot of cards in the description (wincon, sideboard, etc) are not in the current build of the deck anymore.

Also, any suggestion to make this for total around $100-ish deck ?Maybe out Gideon and insert something ?

Anyway, great job on this deck !
