Ashnod's Altar-cation

This deck seeks to go infinite with 2 Myr Retrievers and an Ashnod's Altar in play to either kill the opponent with Disciple of the Vault pings or in conjunction with a Etherium Sculptor (+infinite colorless mana) and a Kaervek's Torch to the face.

Combo pieces:

  • Disciple of the vault: used to deal chip damage, sack to Viscera Seer for some early game scry, or in conjunction with 2 Myr Retrievers + Ashnod's Altar for infinite loop ping damage.
  • Ashnod's Altar: can be used with Disciple of the Vault + 2 Myr Retrievers OR 2 Myr Retrievers + Etherium Sculptor + Kaervek's Torch to deal lethal damage.
  • Myr Retriever: See above combo lines. Can also be used as chump blockers, since they can retrieve each other from the graveyard. Can also fetch back Ichor Wellspring or Chromatic Star for filtering or card draw, or dig back a Ashnod's Altar or Etherium Sculptor that has been removed.
  • Kaervek's Torch: Call me crazy, but I think this is worth playing. An alternate wincon that no one sees coming. Can double as removal in a pinch, but mostly, opens up a new combo using infinite mana w/ Etherium Sculptor + Ashnod's Altar + 2 Myrs. Generate infinite mana and sac final mirror to recur Chromatic Star from grave for the 1 R mana needed to cast.
  • Etherium Sculptor: The MVP of the deck, imo. Speeds draw like crazy. Can reduce the cost of half the cards in your deck. Integral in Kaervek's infinite mana combo, but otherwise the engine of this deck. Can be recurred with Myr, so don't be afraid to toss to a Viscera scry or a Costly Plunder if needed.

Draw:

  • Chromatic Star: Great for saccing with Costly Plunder (draws 3) or just as a regular filter. Can be recurred with Retriever for more draw and filtering.
  • Costly Plunder: Insane with Chromatic Star, Runed Servitor, or Ichor Wellspring. Add Etherium to the mix and you're getting some very efficient, almost broken draw. Most importantly, even if it gets countered, you will still get to draw at least one card off the sacrificed artifact, since the sacrificing is a part of the cost of the spell. Can also be used as a sac outlet for Myr Retriever to recur an artifact from the grave.
  • Ichor Wellspring: Card draw that can be reduced by Etherium Sculptor and sacced to Costly plunder.
  • Viscera Seer: Sac outlet for Myrs and Servitors. Can sac itself.
  • Runed Servitors: More card draw. Chump blocker. Can be recurred by Myr Reclaimer and reduced by Etherium Sculptor. Pairs well with Viscera Seer.
  • Impusle: To help dig for combo pieces.
  • Thoughtcast: DUH

Control:

  • Dispel: Protects combo pieces from disruption. Pretty straight forward.

Land:

  • 4x Seat of Synod, 4 Vault of Whispers, 4x Darksteel Citadel: Standard. Reduces cost of Thoughtcast and can be sacced to Costly Plunder in case of mana flood.
  • 1x Barren Moor, 1x Lonely Sandbar 2x Island, 1 Swamp: Gives you at least some hope of stabilizing mana against rampant artifact hate.

Sideboard:

  • 1x Dispel: For control heavy decks to protect combo.
  • 3x Duress: For Delver/Tron to slow down their draw/filtering and peek/snipe their control pieces.
  • 4x Echoing Decay: For Elves, Bogles, Mardu
  • 2x Fade Away: Highly experimental. For Walls and Stompy, gives you a sac outlet for Myrs, Wellsprings, Stars, and Servitors, while hopefully setting opponent back a lot.
  • 3x Vision Charm: For Mono-colored decks. Slowing them by 1-2 turns can give you the edge. Turns off pestilence for your combo turn. Can also phase out relic, affinity creatures, or save your artifacts from removal.
  • 2x Golden Egg: For aggro/burn matchup, can provide better filtering and recur for life gain.

Versions

V.5 --- FINAL

Removed

  • Village Rites:Viscera seer has perhaps a lower floor but definitely a much higher ceiling.
  • Implement of Experimentation:Ceiling was too low compared to Wellspring.
  • Brainstorm: Doesn't do much without shuffle effects.

Added

  • Viscera Seer: Better than Village Rites. Provides chump blocker that can sac to itself, and cycle numerous creatures to recur draw or scry for combo pieces.
  • Ichor Wellspring:Higher ceiling and higher floor than Implement of Experimentation. At worst, cycles itself for two, and comes down faster to help reduce Thoughtcast.
  • Impulse:The best out of Ponder, Preordain, and Brainstorm. Allows you to dig deepest to find that final combo piece.
  • Kaervek's Torch: The undoubted odd choice. I just find it too good. Spot removal in a pinch, plus enables a totally unexpected combo that is difficult to counter and relies on all the cards that this deck is trying to find anyways.

V.4

Removed

  • Ichor Wellspring: Removed because I had a hard time sacrificing it, thus negating some of its card advantage.

Added

  • Implement of Examination: because it can sac to either Costly Plunder or to itself.

V.3

Removed

  • Viscera Seer: Not high enough impact. Was really only using as sac outlet for other Seers, Servitors, and Myrs, but the Scry wasn't very impactful.

Added

  • Runed Servitor: Consistency.
  • Village Rites: Cheap instant speed card draw that synergizes with most creatures in this deck.

V.2

Removed

  • Kaervek's Torch: Too cute.
  • Perilous Research: Just worse than Costly Plunder in this deck.
  • Sage of Lat-Nam: Too slow and weak to removal.

Added

  • Preordain: To assist with filtering to combo pieces.
