It's Miller Time (Vol. 4)

Standard* Control W/U/B (Esper)

DriftWood96

Description

Welcome back to It's Miller Time folks! It's been a long time coming, but we are back in business because the kind folks at WotC gave us some more mill cards to work with.

Basic point of this deck is to play Fraying Sanity early on, and continue to play as normal. Startled Awake  Flip works very well in conjunction with the curse. I'm aware of the 3.00 CMC for this deck, but after playtesting it seems to work well. Open to suggestions!

Still play testing so bear with me, leave tips and ideas right at the bottom of this page and please give an Upvote if you like what you see!

Updates

Only lost to Jeskai Control and a Mono Blue Mill

Had a successful mill out where I milled 52 of my opponents cards on turn 6, double Fraying Sanity and Startled Awake  Flip

Why only 2 Startled Awake?

July 9, 2017 5:32 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #3

LegitQuickness simply because i really only need 2 in here because of fraying sanity. In the small chance i cast 2 in a game, i will most likely have won already because of all the other mill presence. but anyway, what do you think i should take out for another Startled Awake  Flip?

TMBRLZ says... #4

At first I was confused as to your lack of mill gas but I can see what you're doing here now. Fraying Sanity is pretty scary in it's nondiscrimination of how a card got to the graveyard. I notice your sideboard is missing cards to remove big threats... something like Memory could be really rough for you.

Have you considered Extraction cards like Lost Legacy?

July 9, 2017 10:12 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #5

TMBRLZ that's a great catch. Lost Legacy will definitely help in that area. What do you think about sliding Dispossess into the sideboard as well?

July 10, 2017 3:48 a.m.

TMBRLZ says... #6

The only thing in Standard you'd want to use it for would be Torrential Gearhulk in control and maybe Heart of Kiran, but with Aetheworks Marvel out of the picture, it's far less relevant.

DriftWood96 says... #7

TMBRLZ thanks for your help, any other tips you have would be welcome. playtest if you'd like and if you want to leave a +1 that'd be welcome too

For targeted graveyard hate at instant speed. Crook of Condemnation

July 11, 2017 8:23 a.m.

DriftWood96 says... #9

Qolorful excellent suggestion, especially with all of the play embalm and eternalize are going to get. Thank you for that, i have put it in my sideboard accordingly

Brannan says... #10

I play tested this deck for a bit and I think that it can be beaten by a creature heavy deck for sure, i think that moving Fatal Push into the main-board would definitely help out and make this a stronger deck.

July 11, 2017 2:09 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #11

Brannan I agree with you, what do you suggest I swap for fatal push?

July 11, 2017 2:11 p.m.

Brannan says... #12

I would bump Never / Return down to 1 and then add in 3 Fatal Push

July 11, 2017 7:53 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #13

Brannan done and done. Thanks for that. It lowered my CMC a lot. So that helps

July 12, 2017 9:15 a.m.

capuzzi says... #14

But where is the Hedron Crab tho

July 12, 2017 12:59 p.m.

capuzzi says... #15

They need to reprint our main man Hedron Crab for standard

July 12, 2017 1:02 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #16

capuzzi you're right. That'd be dope. Thanks for commenting! Feel free to leave a +1!

July 12, 2017 5:48 p.m.

Brannan says... #17

yea no problem. Never Forget is good but kinda situational. overall a strong deck, I expect to see it hit mainstream

NinjaShank56 says... #18

Do you find Transgress to be better than Lay Bare the Heart? I totally get wanting to nail something with the exile effect, but Lay Bare is another way to put things into the graveyard? I almost think that I would like to see that as a 2/2 split between the main and the sideboard. Also I love Dovin Baan in this list. He seems like straight gas.

July 13, 2017 5:54 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #19

With a lot of graveyard shenanigans going on in my meta right now NinjaShank56 i feel that Transgress the Mind is the safest way to go. Lay Bare the Heart gives you 2 hoops to jump through and sends it to the graveyard where something can be embalmed or eternalized. I like your thinking though. I appreciate the up vote and the compliments about Dovin Baan, he seems woefully underutilized to me, he's an excellent control planeswalker

July 13, 2017 6:01 p.m.

NinjaShank56 says... #20

That seems very reasonable with the Lay Bare the Hearts, and I somewhat guessed that that would be the reasoning for it. I've been really high on Dovin Baan since he released, I just haven't found a good place to put him yet. I may build this, or something close to it though. I'm really excited to try to do mill, it should be fun!

+1 from me, i really want to playtest this sometime, wish i had a pc :(

July 13, 2017 6:19 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #22

NinjaShank56 feel free to use this as a template man! If you have any questions or concerns, just ask

BestBuds thanks for the +1!! if you ever get to playtest this, i promise you'll have a ton of fun

July 13, 2017 6:26 p.m.

Qolorful says... #23

Question. Do you think dovin baan is really worth splashing white? Seems like it will decrease consistency for what many would say is by no means an overwhelming planeswalker. You might consider adding something like Hour of Revelation or Fumigate if you are going to run white?

July 13, 2017 9:31 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #24

Qolorful Baan's ability to deactivate certain abilities makes him quite useful. not to mention if I'm able to get his final ability off. I was thinking about maybe sideboarding fumigate and Authority of the Consuls for more white

July 14, 2017 4:47 a.m.

Zooby9 says... #25

I would say get rid of Baan and maybe add Ob Nixilis Reignited instead because he is very similar to Jace in letting you draw cards and he can destroy a creature, but also his emblem is very good. That way you can sure up the mana base a bit.

July 14, 2017 10:44 a.m.

DriftWood96 says... #26

Zooby9 that could be a good idea, but as of right now I don't have any issues with the mana base

July 14, 2017 11:41 a.m.

Vayder84 says... #27

why not Jace, Memory Adept ?

July 14, 2017 9:05 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #28

Vayder84 this is a standard deck my dude, you're in the wrong place lol. But thank you for the upvote

Anubis220 says... #30

Pull jace for open the armory it will allow you to fetch fraying sanity find something else to cut for the other two copy's. It will significantly speed up your plan

July 15, 2017 10:43 a.m.

DriftWood96 says... #31

Nah Anubis220 Jace fits the deck well, and I'm not really a fan

July 15, 2017 10:50 a.m.

You kinda need more deserts. The rivulet is under powered without its friends.

July 15, 2017 6:53 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #33

jparker-sartori21 ill fix that immediately

July 15, 2017 6:55 p.m.

Ol_man says... #34

The discard strategy could use at least 1 more Startled Awake.

July 16, 2017 4:58 a.m.

DriftWood96 says... #35

Ol_man got it! taken care of

July 16, 2017 5:26 a.m.

TheRedGoat says... #36

Have you considered using any red in the build before? I think for how deck archetypes are shaping up it has more quick answers for decks than you might think.

July 16, 2017 9:16 a.m.

DriftWood96 says... #37

TheRedGoat I'm not really a red player, but i will definitely consider it because I've seen what Hazoret's Undying Fury can do. But good idea

July 16, 2017 9:25 a.m.

TheRedGoat says... #38

I was really thinking of Collective Defiance or even Sweltering Suns but that could be good for a higher curve. Also Magma Spray is the main removal card I see you gaining in red.

July 16, 2017 9:51 a.m.

ToxicFrosty says... #39

I personally would replace Cancel with Void Shatter with all the graveyard interactions right now a hard exile seems to fit a little more. Other than that seems like a solid list.

July 16, 2017 8:45 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #40

TheRedGoat & ToxicFrosty Thanks for the suggestions, they are dully noted

wattyfathom says... #41

Just wanted to say this is a fresh and fun mill deck that I've been enjoying. I've been running some mono-blue and Dimir/Azorius but this is the first Esper variant I've tried. Thanks for sharing it. :)

July 18, 2017 2:14 p.m.

DriftWood96 says... #42

Thanks for the kind words! wattyfathom Glad you liked the deck and stay tuned as i make updates as i need them

July 18, 2017 3 p.m.

Qolorful says... #43

I actually just put together my mill deck now that I have the cards. I ended up deciding to make it grixis. I think I will do some testing in esper. I think that fumigate in particular will prove to be useful, as well as access to anguished unmaking and dec in stone. Granted my build is more for the long haul.

Mannu_1978 says... #44

Hello

A few questions:

Is there a reason to play cancel if you can have 4 disallow?

Fraying Sanity is combo with any discard, but the ones that exiles. Why not Lay Bare the Heart, or even Mind Rot, instead of Transgress the Mind?

Winds of Rebuke can bounce and mill you AND opponent to feed your own graveyard.

July 21, 2017 6:24 a.m.

DriftWood96 says... #45

Mannu_1978 I answered these types of questions above

July 21, 2017 6:28 a.m.

DriftWood96 says... #46

Mannu_1978 Lay Bare the Heart isn't that great, i like Transgress the Mind because it allows me to permanently get rid of any possible bomb in my opponents hand early on in the game, especially if its a creature with graveyard presence (embalm, eternalize). Mind Rot is a solid card, but i am not in need of it at the moment. I have Consign. I will look into Winds of Rebuke but I've never been fond of self-mill, but it is nice.

July 21, 2017 7:28 a.m.

Mardu_Maniac says... #47

I'd try using one or two Curious Homunculus  Flip for the "easy" 3/4 and the tiny bit of ramp if you need it. Also, Doomfall is bad in my opinion in this deck, I'd replace it with 2 more Never. I also wouldn't use Dispossess, as artifact decks aren't very strong right now (Other than monument but you can easily mill those out)

July 23, 2017 10:31 a.m.

DriftWood96 says... #48

Thanks! ACDAMAN Ill definitely make those edits
