Heads up: I've archived this deck as of January 2017. It's fully up to date with Kaladesh block, but it just isn't competitive enough for my tier-1 playgroup. Kaalia remains a fun and powerful deck, but the consistency and power are a bit lacking for me. Also, Wizards hasn't printed any good Angels, Demons or Dragons in years! Let me know if you ever have questions about future directions for the list, because this page will not reflect any changes going forward. Good luck and have fun!

Kaalia is one of the best and (to me!) most fun beatdown decks you can build for EDH. At the most competitive tables, however, beatdown just isn't a viable wincon for a couple of reasons. Large-scale lifegain, Fog and Maze of Ith effects as well as boardwipes and any targeted removal pointed at Kaalia can completely shut the deck down. My solution has been to add a combo wincon that both synergizes with the main plan and also wins on a totally different axis.

Worldgorger Dragon is that combo. Here's how it works:

  1. Using one of the three reanimation auras in the deck (Necromancy, Animate Dead and Dance of the Dead), return Worldgorger Dragon from the Graveyard to play
  2. Worldgorer's ETB effect exiles my board, including the aura
  3. The aura's LTB effect triggers, sending Wordgorger to my graveyard
  4. Worldgorger's LTB effect brings all my permanents, including the aura, back into play from exile
  5. By reanimating Worldgorger again, I can repeat the loop as many times as I like, bringing all my permanents back as new objects each time. This allows me to keep tapping the same lands for infinite mana, and wantonly abuse ETB effects

With the loop established, my wincons are:

The one enormous caveat to the Worldgorger plan is that if he eats removal in response to his ETB, my own board is irrevocably wiped. That's why the deck isn't all-in on the combo, and why I play out so much beatdown and destruction before attempting to combo off. It's risky, but of course the deck is strong enough that it can win with the usual Kaalia plan If need be.
