Sideboard

Well lads, we finally did it the janky home-brew has now become a meta deck. Making an Approach of the Second Sun deck that actually works has been a pet project of mine for some time now, and with new Ixalan standard the deck is already seeing play in tournaments. When I first conceived the deck I did a UW variant and later changed it to being jeskai. However, with all of the good new white and blue cards that we got in Ixalan I decided to cut red from the deck and go back to UW as I found it to be more consistent. So the way the deck works is to stall until you are able to cast your first Approach of the Second Sun, then use your plethora of card-draw and filtering to dig through your deck until you draw Approach for the second time.

Key Pieces:

Now since this deck does rely heavily on the Approach of the Second Sun, we have many ways to either stall until we get it or win the game through other means, and these are some cards which I find to be particularly important.

  • Torrential Gearhulk: I have had many debates with my playgroup on the importance of the gearhulk in this type of deck since only being able to flash back instants is a very narrow criteria. However, the card has more than proven it's worth as a secondary win-con, and the ability to flash back a dig spell, or mass removal like Settle the Wreckage is so very powerful.
  • Search for Azcanta  : In all of my testing, playing this card on turn 2 increased the odds of winning drastically. Having a free pseudo-scry in your upkeep is rediculous, and since filling your grave yard isn't that hard with this deck flipping the Search is really easy. Then you can use it to dig even deeper into your deck.
  • Settle the Wreckage: Turns out a mass Path to Exile that ignores hexproof is pretty powerful even if it can only hit attacking creatures. How about that?
  • Gideon of the Trials: We run him for his first ability, because usually your opponent is only going to have 1 or in very rare cases 2 creatures on the field, and Gideon can just stop the bigger one entirely. He also makes a decent beater on an empty board.

Words of Wisdom:

Now my only pieces of advice for this deck are that you be very liberal with your spells, you don't want anything to stay on the board that could kill you in less than 10 turns (also a resolved planeswalker is very hard for this deck to deal with so be wary of that), and that you don't rely on Approach of the Second Sun completely. An un-answered Torrential Gearhulk or Gideon of the Trials can just as easily win you the game. So if you are interested in the deck, then please test it out, and feel free to give any feedback that you think might be necessary. And if you liked the deck, then you could also give an upvote if you feel so inclined.

Updates Add

So with the release of Ixalan, we got a reprint of Opt, and since it's an instant speed cantrip, i feel like it should have a place in this deck but i'm not sure where. If anyone has any ideas on what I should replace with Opt, please let me know.
