What is Life from the Loam doing for you here?

April 19, 2016 7:29 p.m.

@hottnikks it combos really well with gitrog.

I guess looking for draw off The Gitrog Monster triggers? I feel like you can probably get something better there since you aren't running any fetches. How about.... Phyrexian Obliterator (the best horror of all)?

April 19, 2016 7:31 p.m.

I'd recommend running Thragtusk instead of tasigur since thragtusk has synergy with titi, while flipping titi with tasigur on the field isn't very good.

Awesome deck!

Wow I was not expecting such an immediate response, thanks for the input guys! No money for Phyrexian Obliterator unfortunately. I agree about Thragtusk though, had not thought of that.

April 19, 2016 7:38 p.m.

@hottnikks how do you plan to cast that thing? Its 4 black! in a 3 color deck, that isn't fun!

and using the life from the loam allows you to grab 2 lands out of the grave each turn while still usually drawing 2.

some combination of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth Sylvan Scrying Verdant Catacombs Halimar Depths should make Phyrexian Obliterator work.

full disclosure I'm working on a similiar list

April 19, 2016 7:43 p.m.

well yeah, those obviously would help, but as is putting in an obliterator is a dangerous dead draw.

has anyone thought to put in Crucible of Worlds ?

Legit once the frog is on you're sacking the same land and netting additional ones after

April 21, 2016 7:17 a.m.

This deck definitely needs some Ghost Quarter because gitrog + GQ + Crucible or Life from the Loam will get your opponent to flip the table.

EDIT: I'd also change up the creatures a little. Snapcaster Mage is amazing. The Gitrog Monster and Thragtusk are both cmc=5, so I'd drop at least 1 Thragtusk.

Reclaim is also really bad. It definitely should be cut.

For more early plays, Disfigure is really good.

Don't play Reclaim when you can play Noxious Revival.

Thanks for the advice, I'll put in some Ghost Quarters. As for Snapcaster Mage and Crucible of Worlds, I'm afraid I just don't have enough money for those types of cards. I will look to replace Reclaim, Disfigure could be nice, Noxious Revival is another option. I will test these out and if you have any other suggestions, I'm always open to try other cards as well.

April 21, 2016 12:44 p.m.

Oh yeah. Disfigure is best in the sideboard to beat decks like Affinity.

Phyrexian Rager ? for more draws, good in the curve and it is a horror.

Also, Phyrexian Revoker as sideboard ?

April 24, 2016 10:20 p.m.

skoobysnackz says... #16

Phyrexian Revoker for sure! I'll see about the Phyrexian Rager I would like to keep the creature count relatively low so I can transform Thing in the Ice  Flip easier, but I'll see if I can try to fit one or two in. Thanks for the suggestions!

April 24, 2016 10:39 p.m.

Cyclonic Rift and Noxious Revival do not belong. Play 4 Thought Scour instead, cutting 1 Go for the Throat.

In your manabase, I'd go a little heavier on the land destruction. Keep the same number of lands (25), but play 3-5 in combination between Tectonic Edge and Ghost Quarter. Manlands are so tough to deal with in Sultai and they give you an easy answer, especially since a super viable long game plan in here is to simply kill all of your opponent's lands. Fetchland make Life from the Loam sooooooooo much better.

In the sideboard, cut everything but Disfigure. Run 2 Damnation. Nature's Claim is great hate for Affinity and other artifact decks; 2-3 wouldn't be unreasonable. You'll need some stuff to combat burn: 2 Dispel and 2 Spellskite is a great start with a lot of applications elsewhere. 1-2 Scavenging Ooze is fantastic in this meta to keep opponents honest. That's 12-14 cards. 2 Jace, Architect of Thought would fit nicely.

I keep going back and forth on whether you want ramp in here or not. Birds of Paradise and Sylvan Caryatid are the options. Birds is Lightning Boltable, but Sylvan Caryatid is 2 mana, which is an awkward spot on your curve. I am pretty sure you do want 3 ramp creatures in here, though.

This deck seriously has the potential to be tier 1. It just needs to be streamlined and tuned. You should probably make a separate decklist to be maximally competitive just to see what the archetype can do. Keep this one around for the budget version, but I really want to see this deck budgetless.

ToolmasterOfBrainerd Thank you for all your input! I only started playing about six months ago, and therefore I usually try to keep it casual and relatively budget (I play online, so some of the costs are a bit different). I am really glad that you see potential in this deck, and I will do my best to make a competitive version of it. Unfortuntely due to budgetary reasons, it is unlikely that I will be able to actually acquire the competitive version myself.

On to your suggestions. I like the Tectonic Edge and Ghost Quarter a lot, and can probably include that in the budget version too. I can try to fit Thought Scour into the budget one as well if I can find good prices. Damnation, Spellskite, Scavenging Ooze and Jace, Architect of Thought as well as fetch/shock lands are where I have trouble justifying spending that much money. Given the way the deck has fared so far, I think ramping is not a bad idea if it allows me to get Gitrog or Thragtusk out a turn earlier. I honestly don't know if Birds of Paradise or Sylvan Caryatid is better, I would have to test them out and see.

I really appreciate all your help and will try to get the competitive version up as soon as possible. I was wondering if you could give me a little insight on how to manage the mana base as I have never used shock/fetch lands before.

April 24, 2016 11:56 p.m.

Glad I could help! I almost wonder if this should be playing Gifts Ungiven. Hmmm. Godless Shrine (1-of in the deck), Life from the Loam, The Gitrog Monster, Unburial Rites sounds like a powerful package to me and it allows you to only play 1 Life from the Loam in here. Not convinced though, since Gifts is also a different deck altogether, and in many regards just getting Unburial Rites and Iona, Shield of Emeria is just better.

As for ramp, Birds of Paradise allows you to curve better, while Sylvan Caryatid matches the deck's playstyle much better. On second thought, however, ramp is appealing, but likely doesn't belong.

Competitive version should start as something like this:

3 Thing in the Ice  Flip

4 Tarmogoyf

2 Snapcaster Mage

3 The Gitrog Monster

1 Thragtusk

3 Abrupt Decay

3 Mana Leak

2 Remand

3 Inquisition of Kozilek

1 Thoughtseize

4 Serum Visions

4 Thought Scour

3 Life from the Loam

3 Ghost Quarter

2 Tectonic Edge

1 Swamp

1 Forest

1 Island

2 Overgrown Tomb

1 Watery Grave

1 Breeding Pool

2 Creeping Tar Pit

2 Darkslick Shores

4 Verdant Catacombs

4 Polluted Delta

For the sideboard, here's what I'm anticipating:

1 Dispel

1 Duress

3 Liliana of the Veil

2 Nature's Claim

3 Disfigure

2 Damnation

2 Spellskite

1 Scavenging Ooze

Nice, I like this build, too! The control shell, with The Gitrog Monster as the top-end value train. =)

I wish you luck with this. It seems like fetchlands are especially useful in Gitrog decks, but considering I don't have them either, I'm not one to talk!

I appreciate seeing a different removal package, too. I am generally unfamiliar with Modern removal, as I just stick a couple Doom Blades in the sideboard and call it good, haha.

ya I'm sure the fetchlands in here are key but I don't have money for that lol, I do have a more competitive list linked in the description that has fetchlands, but I hven't been able to put it together yet.
