Goreclaw & Friends

Commander / EDH Mono-Green

MULRAH

This monogreen deck is ostensibly all about big creatures and can play as a pretty straightforward combat-oriented beatdown deck. Grothama presents a fun minigame for you or your opponents (if they even notice).

With the massive card draw Grothama potentially enables, it is pretty easy to draw into the deck's high-powered "hidden commander": Selvala, Heart of the Wilds. While the deck is not built to fully abuse Selvala, if she sticks around then you can definitely assemble infinite mana, with which you can usually draw your entire deck or at least just enough to win.

If you want to just mix things up a little, swap out Grothama for Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma or Ghalta, Primal Hunger, both of which work very well in this same shell.

After a break of four months, I allowed this deck back onto the scene, and it once again delivered. I didn't even need Selvala. Ghalta and another creature delivered me 14 cards off a fight with Grothama, and those cards included Concordant Crossroads and Overwhelming Stampede. I already had almost 20 lands in play due to Traverse the Outlands, so it was not problem throwing down a fistful of creatures on my next turn, all of which got +11/+11 and haste. With 69 damage coming through, I won the game on the spot.

Although folks got tired of this deck over the summer, I can't say I regret bringing it out for this little pick-me-up. It's nice to have such a reliable deck, and I think it could be a good candidate for new players to our group. It's got enough raw power that it would be successful even without its combo potential. Beyond that, there are layers to the deck: after doing just fine beating down with massive creatures, you might start realizing how awesome it is to draw tons of cards; after that, you start seeing more how the cards combine and discover some of the combos on your own.
