In The Jungle of War there is always a Lion

What an inhospitable world

Early game the deck tries to play politics. Early EDH games the deck should always play politics. Fast starts in a game of commander are stupid starts - and this deck doesn't intend to move quickly. There's one creature besides Mageta - Eternal Dragon and the deck never intends to cast it. I'm fairly helpless as far as dealing damage is concerned.

Preventing it? Now that I can do

As I do with most of my commander decks, in this one I begin with the commander and consider what the card is asking for.

Mageta the lion

First off - he's a creature, vulnerable to everything but the power he unleashes. Swiftfoot Boots and Mask of Avacyn can help you from having to cast him ten times before he sticks.

Mageta worries about very few creatures, but he's also at a card disadvantage in a color that doesn't draw easily. At the core of the deck is overcoming this weakness.

There are a couple strategies I've found:

Finding lands Endless Horizons Gift of Estates Eternal Dragon the deck likes to play with a lot of mana and it doubles as discard fodder.

The curious case of white card draw. Armistice Pursuit of Knowledge Survival Cache Rousing of Souls - cards that give you two cards for their one.

Tomes, Folios, and stones The other way for white to draw is of course with artifacts. Thran Tome is an absolute godsend because we often care more about volume of cards then what they actually are. Loreseeker's Stone is also great here - others include: Liar's Pendulum so much fun! Illuminated Folio Dreamstone Hedron and Mind Stone

Lastly it doesn't matter if cards come from my graveyard or deck. Trading Post is great here. Especially with its friend Codex Shredder

Demystify

So with all of these cards going through your hand the obvious direction to take the deck was by catering to white's power of answers. This is the point where I feel like the deck has to be modulated by the individual. I've taken the rout here of filling the deck with many of my pet cards - you know the ones you always put in a deck at first and then cut because something else is better? Mana Tithe doesn't get used all that often but the look on their face when I counterspell their thing in white? Priceless. I can afford these oddly specific answers because any two of them equal a Wrath of God

I can afford Celestial Purge against a blue deck Radiant Purge when all my opponents are monocolored. I can beat face with Caribou Range I can stick Mageta's Boon in for flavor. The specific answers don't matter as long as there are a lot of them, and they're diverse. I do tend to go after exile in the case of creature removal though.

Armored ascension

Not dying is a legitimate strategy in terms of winning. I tend to win games by being one of the last two and pulling through with shere card advantage.

As win conditions I have Armored Ascension for commander damage, and Codex Shredder for mill. Also Reto lantern to stop myself from being decked. That's the extent of resources I put into killing my opponent. If I have to spend 7 turns hitting them for 3 commander damage then I will.

The deck puts a lot of resources into not dying though. Mageta can't always board wipe, and not all dangers are creature based, so besides boatloads of removal I have all of the runes of protection, Sphere of Safety Lightmine Field Aurification and Circle of Solace

I also include some all purpose hate - Torpor Orb and Culling Scales can be very useful.

Those poor Soldiers
