Welcome to the Church of Avacyn

An Angel's Descent is a voltron/combo deck centered on Avacyn. The deck is thus designed with her abilities in mind and uses cards that synergize with her kit.

Unlike traditionnal Boros list, this deck does not aim to win through combat step but rather assemble a combinaison of cards which deals a great amount of damage in one swing. Winning through combat damage is a possibility but the flavor win condition is the combinaison of Blasphemous Act and Repercussion reminescent of the fall of Avacyn.

Avacyn is one of my favorite MTG character. Her depiction in Archangel Avacyn   is the most flavorful in my opinion and reflects best her developement through the story of Innistrad.

Protector of Man driven by madness into their demise.

Gameplay-wise, her flip mechanics makes her a fun yet challenging commander to build around.

Colors - brings creatures who can be sac to trigger protection effects while brings her board damage. traditionally lacks ramp and draw, this is mitigate by taxes and mana fixing while draw is taken care of by wheel and cycle.

Flash and Flying - Flash is a rare trait among commander and means she can be used as a combat trick or haste. Flying gives her latitude when we want to win through combat damage

Indestructibility for all - Her ETB effect protect our creatures from board-wipe. It is not really use in the deck as we do not plan to go wide but combine with Flash it is the most angel-like entrance I can imagine.

Wrath - Her most unique feature : a built-in board wipe which can be devastating coupled with Basilisk Collar. It is also repeatable with blink effect.

CMC - Thanks to her monocolor casting cost, it is common to cast her on turn 3. Moderately cheap, it is not unusual to cast her 2-3 times per game.

Strategy

This deck is not aggressive by nature and focus on assembling a board state that allows a swift victory. Hopefully, our threat level is on the low-side since our commander herself does not initiate combo. Our creatures and enchantment are not threatening either which will encourage aggression toward other players.

Our enchantment are protected from most board wipe effects which usually target creatures.

Our creatures are cheap enough to be cast reliably with Underworld Breach but are mostly use to trigger Avacyn's flip so it is ok to hang on to them until you can cast Avacyn.

Cards selection

Ramp and fixing - Most mana rock are self-explainatory. One particularity is Nyx Lotus; I'm currently testing this card : some of our permanents have more than one / which can quickly make up for its tapped entry and cost.

Draw and tutoring - Most draw are made through Faithless Looting type of cards or wheel. This might seems bad but it also fuel our graveyard for Underworld Breach. Wheel have a sweet interaction with Smothering Tithe. Our tutors are enough to ensure consistency and ability to have our silver bullets.

Defense - While our creatures are small and our enchantment mostly harmless, we still have a deterrent in the form of Avacyn. Her flash and ETB effects means she can block any attacker and if she arrives on the board with a sac fodder, the threat of a board wipe is real.

Futhermore, we have access to all of arsenal in creature dealing.

Strategy

has always lacking in ramp and card advantage compared to the rest of the color pie. We use in majority colorless mana rock to ramp and wheel/filter cards to keep our hand fresh.

Notable inclusions

Gift of Estates: Can get us even or ahead depending of the differences in lands. Would like to change it for Land Tax which is more flavorful for a Church theme.

Smothering Tithe: One of my favorite cards. The tax side feels really "Churchly" while giving us ramp. This card is really amazing as it either slow our opponents or accelerate our gameplan. Probably one of the best addition to since Dominaria

Kor Cartographer: She is a little expensive for grabbing a plains in my opinion, however, she helps us get Mistveil Plains which is not a basic.

Gilded Lotus, Nyx Lotus: Those rocks are pretty expensive but they gives us a lot of colored mana which is essential in casting our spells. Avacyn herself is

Strategy

Our creatures show little presence while on the board but each of their effect is useful to us in some way but their main purpose is either to trigger Avacyn's flip ability or enable her to use it one more time. Most are tutorable with Recruiter of the Guard.

Notable inclusions

Benevolent Bodyguard: Protection at instant speed. You can flash in Avacyn and if someone cast a removal on the stack, you can sac him to protect Avacyn while triggering her flip ability.

Bounty Agent: A permanent removal. The "legendary" type can be restrictive but in EDH it is very welcome.

Kami of False Hope: Fog effect against aggro/aggressive deck.

Magus of the Wheel: Wheel card that help us get a new hand when we either dumped our hand or isn't suitable to the situation. Only downside is it has to be tapped.

Remorseful Cleric: Great card against graveyard deck. The fact that it is targeted graveyard allow us to keep our threat level low.

Selfless Spirit: Can be a substitute when you don't have enough mana to cast Avacyn and want to keep your board state.

Strategy

While we do not seek a go wide strategy, it can be useful to protect our board notably against Repercussion.

Notable inclusions

Mark of Asylum: This enchantment is huge, protecting all our creature against non-combat damage assure us we do not kill ourselves with Repercussion. In my meta, it killed another player storm player who was unable to deal with it.

Light of Sanction: A little weaker version of Mark of Asylum since it's only non-combat damage coming from our spells. However, it is then guarantee to draw less hate and more chance to stay on the field when we need it.

Gift of Immortality: Sometimes, a hero can be bestow a divine blessing. Put this on one of our sac fodder to get as much value as possible.

Strategy

A Voltron strategy was initially the main win condition of this deck. While it has changed since then, I like that it is a secondary win condition to rely on. Tajic, Legion's Edge and Cavalier of Dawn serve a double purpose as respectively a protection and removal as well as fall back general in case Avacyn is out.

Notable inclusions

Basilisk Collar: This equipment is amazing on Avacyn. Coupled with her wrath effect or Chandra's Ignition, this equals a "destroy all creatures" as well as gaining us tons of life.

Shadowspear: A new addition from Theros Beyond Death. Cheap and with relevant keyword, this equipment is a beast. The activated ability is also very flavorful, yelling "By the Light be damned", and ensure that all boards are wiped clean.

Strategy

Draw and tutoring are what makes a deck consistent. There is two cards we will be seeking a lot of times :

  • Repercussion : our main win condition

  • Sunforger : an unusual tutor which will then allow us to dig for any answer we need

Notable inclusion

Underworld Breach: What I always disliked about Sun Titan is the restriction on CMC and types. This new addition deals about ALL the card in your graveyard.

Strategy

Our main win condition is dealing damage to our opponents creatures while Repercussion is on the board. This punish greatly go wide strategy while our Voltron suits will take on those who have an empty board.

Notable inclusion

Chandra's Ignition: This synergizes with Basilisk Collar since it is the targeted creature that deals damage.

Chandra, Awakened Inferno: She is uncounterable which is unvaluable in closing games. She can deal with go-wide strategy with her minus 3 or on go-tall with her minus X. Those damage can be doubled with Furnace of Rath or Dictate of the Twin Gods.
