Goblin Rabblemaster? I've always kinda liked his art.

Also, the card art on Barrage of Expendables is so more detailed than I thought it was!

(I just saw this deck in some folder titled 'Miscellany' so I checked it out and saw this).

Also, Last Word is one I like. Polymorphist's Jest may also be a consideration.

What do you consider to make a card's art good?

December 21, 2015 2 p.m.

clayperce says... #4

Yeah those are fun.

I'm not really sure what I consider, I've just been gradually putting up the stuff I like best. I guess I kind of ask myself "Would it bring me joy a year from now if I had to look at it every day?" Looking at my fav's, I notice they're all pretty realistic-looking and they're all very dramatic. But I don't really know.

Demolish Also looks nice, it's a little bit more detailed than you think

clayperce says... #7

Yeah, his Lands are almost all amazing! What are your favorites?

I think mine may be his Unhinged Island and the Promo Savage Lands.

You're right -- Demolish is pretty sweet too!

This list needs a lot more Terese Neilson and Rebecca Guay.

February 6, 2016 12:38 p.m.

clayperce says... #9

Yeah, they're both really good. What are your favorite pieces?

February 6, 2016 1:08 p.m.

Eastwestian33 says... #10

clayperce My very favorite art is definitely Grove of the Burnwillows from future sight. Some of my other favorites are Bitterblossom, Enter the Infinite, Rebecca Guay version of Path To Exile, Enchanted Evening, and Gilder Barin. Lorwyn and Time Spiral blocks contain most of my favorite art.

February 6, 2016 5:35 p.m.

clayperce says... #11

I'm not a huge fan of the Grove, but I'm with you on the rest!
Thanks for dropping by and especially for staying to comment!

I lke the detail in Cathars' Crusade. Similar to Crusader of Odric, but like, on horseback :P

February 10, 2016 10:03 p.m.

clayperce says... #13

Oh that's amazing. I've seen the card a TON of times, but never really looked at it ... wow!

clayperce Vexing Shusher's promo is really cool.

February 24, 2016 4:32 p.m.

clayperce says... #17

Ooooh yeah, that's really neat: Vexing Shusher. And made even better since TCGplayer mid for the foil promo is less than the normal non-foil card!

Yeah, Silverskin Armor is a good one

I don't think I've really noticed Mindshrieker before, that's a great one too!

Plus, it reminds me of Baleful Strix!

Hey, I just recently got a Winterflame, I remember seeing it on here. It's amazing. I ordered a foil one lol.

As for art, I noticed while playing my Gahiji, Honored One commander deck (I actually just changed it to Rith, as I had one of them in the deck), that in the background of Krenko, Mob Boss, there is the exact card art from Krenko's Command. I thought it was pretty cool.

Also, in the background of Unquestioned Authority, there is Fblthp from Totally Lost.

Hope you enjoy

I've always thought Rescue from the Underworld was an awesome piece. I've tried to find a high res version to print on a playmat but I never had any luck (admittedly this was a while ago). I'm a big Raymond Swanland fan, so a few of my other favorites: Breakthrough, Cabal Therapy, Despise promo, Diabolic Revelation, and Lightning Helix.

Sweet "deck" concept you have yourself here! ;)

April 30, 2016 11:38 a.m.

clayperce says... #26

That's awesome! First, I love Winterflame, and I run Rith too! and I love the "hidden" images you found. SO COOL!!!

There's a 994x720 version here. At the risk of sounding like a commercial, that's more than enough for Inked to work with (they did my Winterflame mat, and it's gorgeous ... and they only had 650 x 325 to work with).

That said, please note I got my mat back before Wizards changed their agreement with artists. Artists have a TON more control over their images now. Which is kind of a double-edged sword. It's much easier now to get mats and other artworks direct from the artists. But becuase it's much more of an impact on the artists if we purchase pirate stuff, so Inked and others have really tightened up on checking for copyright first ...

A really cool article here about MTG artwork that has been nominated for (and 5x won) the Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists' Chesley Award.

I forgot to come back and post: thanks for the link to the higher rez, clayperce! I'll have to look in to the deets about printing it!

Have you seen Olivia Voldaren? I always thought it was cool, plus it's messed up art...

Olivia Art Show

Or maybe Blood Artist

Warning - Contains Blood Show

Bovine073 says... #30

Hey clay, I was talking about how Krenko, Mob Boss had the art from command in the background, but I also noticed looking at Winterflame, that the figure in the foreground looks suspiciously similar to that of the orc in Shaman of the Great Hunt.

Just something cool I saw :)

One of my favorite things about Magic is the incredible artwork. Sometimes opening a pack is like revealing a handful of miniature paintings. I absolutely love the full high rez images up there, beautiful stuff.

I'll come back when I have time to compile some of my favorites. The first card I saw in SOI though that I fell in love with because of all the flavor in its name, art, and ability is Topplegeist. I think it's wonderful.

May 10, 2016 11:04 a.m.

clayperce says... #32

Yeah, I distinctly remember the first time I looked up a high-res version of Olivia Voldaren!

Warning for those not familiar with the image: It cannot be unseen

Oh that's cool!

Thanks much for the kudos!

And yeah, I really like Topplegeist too!

May 14, 2016 6:35 p.m.

Bovine073 says... #33

Oh now that's why it's called Topplegeist, get it? Because he's toppling the cand... oh I'll be quiet now.

I saw a foil promo release of Deathbringer Regent yesterday, and it was beautiful.

I also really enjoy Swell of Growth. I recently put together a Landfall deck and I instantly fell in love it.

Have you ever taken a good, hard look at Goblin Kaboomist?

I hate green irl and even I like it.

It also fits the flavour perfectly, and I love how the Goblin is oblivious to the fact that having lit land mines in your backpack is probably not a good idea.

Quickling was a recent one i just thought it was so detailed and crisp compared to some other cards, not a fan of the kaladesh and aer artworks starting to look to cartoony

Love this. I'm a little mad that you have this, because now I'm going to have to look through every Terese Nielsen card to find my favorite. Which will lead down a 16,000-pieces-of-artwork-rabbit-hole...
