On the Battlefield

The goal is to explore the whole potential of The Ur-Dragon itself, rather than theory-craft a perfect deck. Admittedly, this library lacks tremendous amounts of removal/control cards in order to facilitate a faster arrival onto the battlefield. It will seem tame and awkward early on, but the game-winning combinations can be executed abruptly; catching even veteran players off-guard from time to time.

Here we focus on Ur-Dragon's triggered ability more than his eminence. A triggered Ur-Dragon can put permanents onto the field (avoiding counterspells) while having plentiful mana for follow up spells and abilities. Rather than swarm with dragons that may have redundant or non-existent abilities, I've implemented methods of multiplying the triggered ability itself. Regardless, the library still maintains a healthy array of individual dragons, and the commander doesn't fight alone.

Depending on the amount of interaction from opponents, this deck can reliably win by turns 8-10. I prefer a casual-multiplayer format, so the pace reflects that. Paths to victory include Poison, Commander Damage, both Combat and Non-Combat damage, Removal Engines, and Door to Nothingness; more importantly, each strategy has multiple synergistic combinations.

Full Spectrum Dominance

(This deck embraces its access to along with Ur-Dragon's gargantuan cost. The goal is to bring forth the commander as many times as needed throughout, no matter how often he falls.)

( Minamo, School at Water's Edge combos with Chromatic Orrery, effectively netting an extra three mana. Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner is even more cost efficient, and can also untap either Faeburrow or Bloom Tender.)

Fist of Suns , Jodah, Archmage Eternal , Morophon, the Boundless Show

(Just one of these would facilitate Ur-Dragon's rapid arrival onto the battlefield; but Morophon in combination with either Fist of Suns or Jodah reduces the cost of any dragon to , including your commander.)

Mirari's Wake , Mana Reflection , Nyxbloom Ancient , Mirage Mirror Show

(Copying Mana Reflection or Nyxbloom with the Mirror is amazing. Now, imagine having Nyxbloom and two Mirrors via Phyrexian Metamorph ; and say hello to Legacy Weapon .)

(The 'multikicker' on Everflowing Chalice will combo with Reflection or Nyxbloom to great effect; especially if Chromatic Orrery is in the mix. The Chalice is good for either early game ramp, or late game activated abilties and commander tax.)

( Goldspan Dragon combines well with Smothering Tithe , and synergizes with Reflection and Nyxbloom.)

(Inevitably, one or more opponents will target your valuable permanents; which is why there is Sterling Grove , Privileged Position and Replenish .)

Chain Reactions

Strionic Resonator , Lithoform Engine , Helm of the Host , Aggravated Assault , Kodama of the East Tree Show

(By copying Ur-Dragon's triggered ability, I not only draw more cards but put down more permanents. Most assume that simply attacking with many dragons is the best way to utilize Ur-Dragon, but this deck doesn't share that notion.)

(Any one of these cards is sufficient to double Ur-Dragon's triggered ability; however, the synergy between them unlocks more potential. Lithoform can make token Resonators, and Both the Resonator and Lithoform can create additional token Ur-Dragons by targeting the Helm's ability. On top of that, Kodama can trigger off Ur-Dragon's resolutions as well as the Helm's [tokens and lands have equal cmc]. Finally, Aggravated Assault adds triggers for both the Helm and Ur-Dragon. To put that in theoretical perspective... One Ur-Dragon can become four thanks to Lithoform, Resonator, and Helm. If all attack [with Kodama on the field], this gives four successive triggers to draw four cards and put down two permanents; which equals 16 cards drawn and 8 permanents on the field. You could then activate Aggravated Assault, attacking again for an additional 25 cards drawn and 10 more permanents; the totals being 41 cards drawn and 18 permanents on one turn. As unlikely a scenario as this is, it still demonstrates why all are included in the deck.)

(Since both the Resonator and tokens from the Helm aren't legendary, they are fair game for Mirage Mirror and Phyrexian Metamorph .)

(Because Lithoform Engine is legendary, it can be reactivated a second time via Minamo, School at Water's Edge .)

(Other creatures in the deck can benefit from their triggered abilities being copied, such as Silumgar, the Drifting Death or Terror of the Peaks .)

(I was originally reluctant to add Kodama, but the value extends beyond just riding Ur-Dragon's ability. The Resonator and Lithoform can copy the triggered ability; and creating a token Kodama with the Helm, even just once, could be game changing. Another thing some people may not realize, is that lands have a Converted Mana cost of and qualify for the trigger [Refer to 202.1b and 202.3a of MTG's official Comprehensive Rules]. I am usually discarding lands at the end of my turn when exceeding my maximum hand size, and I DON'T want to make room for Thought Vessel or Reliquary Tower .)

Bridging the Gaps

Planar Bridge + Seedborn Muse Show

(This combination allows you to fetch permanents during each player's turn, preferably on their end-step or in response to one of their actions. This will garner hate from opponents, so carefully select "needed" cards. You are, by default, threatening to win once this combo is active.)

(Using Lithoform Engine in tandem with the Bridge only increases the total activation cost by , and it will accelerate your win condition by searching for two permanents at a time. For that very reason, Lithoform should be one of the first cards chosen when using this combo. Futhermore, Minamo, School at Water's Edge will enable more activations for either Lithoform or the Bridge; which could bring the total permanents per turn to three.)

(The permanent entering the battlefield will trigger Kodama of the East Tree , which in turn can be capitalized by Strionic Resonator or Lithoform Engine.)

(You can respond to opponents targeting your permanents by placing Privileged Position onto the field. Other notable surprises against opponents are Avacyn, Angel of Hope , True Conviction , or Platinum Angel .)

(It may be necessary to fetch Homeward Path if someone steals Ur-Dragon or, even worse, uses Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund .)

( Telepathy is an entertaining permanent. At worst it will waste an opponent's removal effect. At best it will embolden you to execute winning combos.)

Ultimate Battlefield

Omniscience + Enter the Infinite Show

(When using this combo, Dragonlord Dromoka should be one of the first permanents put on your field, preferably just before.)

(If any opponent tries to challenge the deck in your hand, Mana Drain and Teferi's Protection are potentially available.)

(I use Platinum Angel to protect myself from an empty library, mainly because the angel can also save against other loss effects; and I have plenty of win conditions.)

(You can put down as many lands as needed via Kodama of the East Tree , and preceding that with Amulet of Vigor will ensure they are untapped.)

(Infinite-Mana is not a primary goal of this deck. However, if you manage to acquire unlimited full-spectrum mana, it does have an advantage over Omniscience; in that you can pay for all types of mana costs. This is especially apparent when suppressing your opponents' Rhystic Study or Smothering Tithe .)

Spear of Fiery Conviction

(The Shadowspear is mainly there to counter hexproof and indestructible, which can open up coordination with other players against shared enemies. The equipment effects are decent for the cost as well.)

(You can multiply Emancipation with itself by using Mirage Mirror [Refer to the example in 614.5 of MTG's official comprehensive rules.]; and if that isn't enough overkill for you, a second Mirror can be had for Phyrexian Metamorph . )

(Keep in mind that according to "Trample" rules, the creature needs to assign lethal amounts to blockers before it is multiplied by Emancipation.)

(Because combat damage isn't the main priority, "Unblockable" effects have been sacrificed. To at least have something, Shizo, Death's Storehouse and Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep are currently taking the place of "Basic Lands". Being that my basic land count is already extremely low, the difference between 1-5 basic lands is negligible.)

Ur-Dragon's Lethality

Tainted Strike , Phyresis Show

(10 infect from Ur-Dragon is ruthless. These are are your cheapest one-shot wonders, but remember that they combo with Chandra's Ignition or Terror of the Peaks to better effect.)

Fiery Emancipation Show

(30 commander damage is no joke. To avoid counterspells and early destruction, it is best to put this onto the field via Ur-Dragon's triggered ability. At that point, Chandra's Ignition can be a game-ender if left unanswered.)

True Conviction + ( Mirari's Wake or Morophon, the Boundless or Shadowspear ) Show

(21 commander damage is reached with these alternative combinations. Use Ur-Dragon's ability to put Conviction onto the field during an attack, and you can catch someone off guard.)

(Fueling this is actually quite trivial, especially with the deck's repertoire: Mirari's Wake , Mana Reflection , Nyxbloom Ancient , Ramos, Dragon Engine , Chromatic Orrery , Faeburrow Elder , Bloom Tender , etc.)

(While abiding proper stack process with the payment of , you can turn Scion into a 10/4 Skithiryx. This combo can only be utilized if both Moltensteel Dragon and Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon are in your library.)

Terror of the Peaks + ( Phyresis or Tainted Strike ) + ( The Ur-Dragon or Moltensteel Dragon ) Show

(This can be even more savage, by adding Strionic Resonator , Lithoform Engine , or Helm of the Host . Combining Aggravated Assault with the Helm is especially effective here.)

Advanced Weaponry

Legacy Weapon + Seedborn Muse Show

(This strategy is rare and is only pursued if you can get a minimum of 5-10 activations per turn; usually it's best to target their lands and mana production first, thereby crippling each opponent before their main phase. Combinations of Mana Reflection and/or Nyxbloom Ancient along with Chromatic Orrery , Bloom Tender , or Faeburrow Elder can get the needed number of activations.)

(You can ramp even more via Mirage Mirror , Phyrexian Metamorph , Lithoform Engine , or Helm of the Host . Keep in mind, Mana Reflection and Nyxbloom are each multiplicative, so potential output is dozens of mana per source.)

( Shadowspear will allow you to bypass hexproof, and Arcane Lighthouse can help against any creatures' hexproof and/or shroud.)

Ultimate Weapon

Legacy Weapon + ( Nyxbloom Ancient or Helm of the Host ) + ( Faeburrow Elder or Bloom Tender ) + Aggravated Assault Show

(I don't like infinite combos. However, my opponents don't shy away from using theirs. Individually, each card is integral to my deck's strategies, so this combination was unintended. If I was serious about this engine, I would add Umbral Mantle ; but that is unlikely at this time.)

(The engine feeds its surplus of to Legacy Weapon after paying to untap your creatures, and this process can be done infinitely at sorcery speed. All targetable permanents belonging to your opponents, including lands, are subject to removal on the turn this becomes active. In most cases, you will win if this is left unanswered. Shadowspear and Arcane Lighthouse are supplemental for this.)

(If you don't have all five colors among your permanents, you can still generate infinite mana; thereby easily casting Ur-Dragon to fix the spectrum. This is assuming you can initially pay the missing colors from your other mana sources.)

(With infinite mana and untaps, Captain Sisay or Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius can stand in for Legacy Weapon; as they would bring forth any number of legendary cards from your library including Legacy Weapon.)

(Because this gives infinite Combat Phases, innumerable copies of your creatures can be made using the Helm. If Ur-Dragon is on your field, be careful with how many dragons attack; unless Platinum Angel is there. You could mill yourself out and lose before damage is even dealt, so remember trigger discipline.)

(In this engine, Nyxbloom or the Helm can be substituted with varying combinations of Mana Reflection , Mirage Mirror , Phyrexian Metamorph , and Chromatic Orrery . The goal is to retain the full spectrum in surplus every time you pay for Aggravated Assault's ability. However, even if you only manage infinite combat phases without unlimited red mana, that could enable other options.)
