Alesha, Who Smiles at Death - Hatebears

1v1 Commander* RBW (Mardu)

Screptillian

Caution: Deck is very brain intensive and has a lot of different lines of play.

Line 1: Tempo.

This is the overall theme of the deck and the most prevalent, we can disrupt our opponents in a number of ways in the first 2/3 turns. Whether that be through hand disruption via thoughtseize effects, limiting their resources via things like thalia, or straight up land denial with sinkhole effects.

Line 2: Weenies

All of our "bears" do something, Line 2 is a lot about timing and being the control deck in the matchup. This is usually used in the control matchups I've found because even 1 threat can be detrimental to their game plan. ie grand abolisher, tidehollow sculler, sin collector, kitesail freebooter, stoneforge mystic, the list goes on.

Line 3: OG Reanimator

Alesha, at her basic view for the less complex lines is a reanimator deck, she cheats things out to her advantage. This line is much like line 2. If we can outvalue our opponents in the early game we have them i.e entomb end of your turn, land animate dead on insert titan here, buried alive allows for quick and early access to this line as well. While you can't dark ritual buried alive in this deck the card is able to aid in every line that we could ever want to play with.

Don't play this deck if:

  • You don't like destroying your opponents lands/hand
  • Don't like tight lines of play
  • Don't like having to have on point threat analysis all the time forever and ever and ever.
  • Don't like not winning through a combo interaction

Play this deck if:

  • You like graveyards
  • You like destroying lands
  • You like watching hope fade from the control players eyes
  • You like tempo decks

Made the following cuts/shifts

A lot of this is a meta call, due to the increase in the local popularity of Geist of Saint Traft + Narset decks I decided to add a little more hate towards them that carries over into just about any and every matchup for the most part.

out:

  • Triskelion
  • Golgari Thug
  • Stinkweed Imp
  • Molten Rain
  • Sinkhole
  • Pillage
  • Ravenous Baboons

in:

  • Judith, the Scourge Diva
  • Council's Judgment
  • Crackling Doom
  • Diabolic Edict
  • Geth's Verdict
  • Pithing Needle

Reasoning:

Triskelion:

Good card, it was too high on curve for my enjoyment and just didn't do as much as I wanted it to, I'm testing Judith over him. She's been really good so far and adds so much value during the attack phase, her anthem is what pushed her over the edge as compared to triskelion and she's a lot more life conservative than triskelion was in flipping cards over with Dark Confidant.

Golgari Thug :

Again good card, but bad in this meta. There are a lot of decks right now that have the uncomfortable ability to run RiP + Helm and I don't want to commit 4+ cards to my graveyard very often, I would definitely include him at first if you're just learning the deck.

Stinkweed Imp :

Same reasoning for Thug, only thing that really made me debate on it is the poorly worded deathtouch on it.

Molten Rain :

Didn't do enough in my meta, still would include in the list otherwise.

Sinkhole :

Meta call

Pithing Needle :

Meta call, a lot of planeswalker/superfriends type decks running around, LIli of the Veil also is a frightful card in other mardu matchups.

Vampire Hexmage : meta call, lots of planeswalkers

Thinking of adding Remorseful cleric as there's a couple graveyard decks brewing and I would like some utility creature for them as well.
