Tuesday Night SCG Modern! —June 19, 2018

Got second place, went 3-1!

First round faced Affinity against a friend of mine. He wasn't fast enough for my trampling, high powered Goblin Piledriver though. Went 2-1 against him.

Second round faced Storm against one of the store owners. He stormed me out first game then I put in Damping Sphere. Got it out turn 2 second game and he couldn't storm off with that on board. Third game he top decked straight lands, Grapeshots and Past in Flames while I just hit him over and over again. Won 2-1.

Third round faced a guy I've never seen before playing Burn. First game I flooded, second game I got screwed and he crushed me 2-0.

Fourth round faced 8-rack. First game I got a lot of burn against him and eventually killed him after surviving Smallpoxes, Lilianas, and Shrieking Afflictions. Second game he locked me out with Lili and two The Racks. Third game I swung for 17 on turn 3 using Goblin Piledrivers and he used a Bontu's Last Reckoning while on 2. I just happened to top deck the Goblin Guide and swing for the win.

First of all, I was very impressed with Goblin Piledriver. Adding him was a big step to winning more tournaments and he synergizes very well with Legion Loyalist. I wasn't very impressed with Mogg War Marshal because of the summoning sickness after echo death. Thinking about replacing him with the new Goblin Instigator from M19 when it releases. I still need some sideboard changes, especially to beat Burn because that's one of the deck's worst matchups. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Until next tournament, may the Goblin Guides never hit lands!

Burning-Tree and piledriver have always been a nonbo for me, I would choose one or the other. If you choose to go with burning-tree, I'd recommend some devastating summons. I would be playing 4 mogg fanatic over any firebrands, although I play 4 of each and have foregone the mogg war marshal. Blood moon seems way better than magus if you have access. 17 lands is very low to me, I always run 18 or 19, possibly 17 with a simian spirit guide (but I'm not a fan of that card in goblins anyway).

Well you honestly have a pretty good set up. Warren Instigator with a Krenko, Mob Boss would be nice to see. To kill quicker you could use haste mechanics like Mass Hysteria, Hammer of Purphoros or Fervor. I didn't see Goblin Arsonist or Mogg Flunkies on your list and I can't help but feel like either would do better than the firebrands. Also think about legion loyalist, it's as good as goblin guide.

Monomanamaniac instigator and krenko are both much too slow for a deck like this. A plan like that is very powerful in a slow goblins build that has larger amounts of disruption, but in this deck it's just too slow. You can't play 4 drops in a deck with 17 lands, and the entire point of 8-whack is to go as fast as possible. All your other creatures are extremely cheap and the deck wants you to put in creatures precombat due to ETB triggers. Your dream scenario for such a plan is a turn 3 krenko, and you had to spend an extra card to make a fragile 1/1 that is very likely to die anyway. Half the deck has haste and the other half grants haste, why would this deck need any of those cards? Hammer and fervor even come down after you've played all your creatures and they are no longer summoning sick. Goblin arsonist doesn't allow you to kill 1 toughness creatures on demand, which is a huge deal. Mogg flunkies is just bad.
