Ramos, Dragon Engine Charms

How It Plays

Utilizing a large number of modal 3-color charms, this deck seeks to quickly reach 5 +1/+1 counters on Ramos in order to pump out the more powerful spells, quickly overwhelming opponents with value.

The early game is about ramping into a Ramos while everyone else is setting up. If opponents are keeping mana open to destroy Ramos, we can instead pivot to other value generating cards like Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder, Kess, Dissident Mage, Taigam, Ojutai Master, and Maelstrom Wanderer.

This Build

Originally this list included many mana-doublers like Winding Constrictor, Doubling Season, Corpsejack Menace, and Hardened Scales but those card were not effective without the fragile Ramos. It turns out that he can roll up to 5 counters very quickly with the rest of the deck without having to assist.

For charms, I chose most charms that drew extra cards, which is something this deck is light on. Additionally there are two notable charms for their ability to roll Ramos directly to 5 counters from nothing: Abzan Charm and Jund Charm both have the option to add two +1/+1 counters to Ramos while also being 3c spells.

The most powerful play, and main way this deck will win, is casting Conflux with Ramos in play. This immediately gives you the 5 +1/+1 counters for Ramos to create 10 mana and allows you to fetch Omniscience, probably the most powerful 10-mana play you can produce (be aware that you have to generate a 3rd blue mana since Ramos only generates UU). I like fetching Omniscience, Sunbird's Invocation, Cruel Ultimatum, Seasons Past, and any other white spell. This means that, even if they can remove Omniscience immediately, you can use your priority to cast Sunbird's Invocation for free and setup a powerful next turn. If they don't immediately destroy Omniscience, then the game is pretty much over. You should be able to cast every spell in your deck due to the fact that Seasons Past returns Conflux, along with a ton of other charms and spells, from graveyard to hand while putting itself on the bottom of the deck to be immediately re-tutored for by Conflux. Cycling these two cards back-and-forth can allow you to infinitely cast Cruel Ultimatum or Violent Ultimatum until your opponents scoop. If they're particularly stubborn, go get Guttersnipe and burn them out.

Card Selection

I like spells that are effectively free (both in card replacement and mana) so I run Gitaxian Probe, Manamorphose, and Frantic Search as free roll-ups for Ramos, cascades for Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder, and triggers for Sunbird's Invocation and Guttersnipe.

This deck probably needs more ways to protect Ramos, other than Golgari Charm, Boros Charm, Mystic Confluence, and Lightning Greaves, but I've moved it in a direction that is more resilient without depending entirely upon Ramos to win.

I hate cascading into counterspells, so I only run the modal ones like Izzet Charm, Mystic Confluence, and Cryptic Command. The latter was cut because it couldn't be cast by simply rolling down Ramos for mana, but instead required an additional blue mana untapped. But there's room for experimenting with Silumgar's Command and possibly Dromar's Charm, Swan Song, and Temur Charm depending on how much notoriety and hate your Ramos is drawing.

In addition to cycling lands, Thrasios, Triton Hero provides a great mana dump for a charge up Ramos and a dead hand.

I'm also a big fan of Kozilek, Butcher of Truth as a great 10-mana play but there's a lot of interplay between Seasons Past and Kess, Dissident Mage that can be disrupted by the Eldrazi's shuffle effect.

There's still a lot of testing to do, but this build seems solid enough to scare some people at EDH night.
