Death's Shadow Making Waves in Modern!! —Feb. 8, 2016

So I just finished watching Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch, and besides the new Eldrazi decks that were added to the format, one of the other new decks that saw play was a flavor of Zoo playing Death's Shadow!! Seeing this reminded me how little I've edited this deck in the past year or two, and as such, I'll be providing a revamped version of the Death's Shadow combo deck in the near future, utilizing more single card cantrips like Street Wraith and Gitaxian Probe, and minimizing on the cards that I can accidentally kill myself with, like Spoils of the Vault. As such, this will provide a more resilient way to dig for missing pieces of the kill while hopefully still providing the insane clock this deck has the ability to give us. For now, I'll cycle the old decklist and reset the discussion, so maybe someone will be willing to drop in some ideas for the deck.

Thanks!! I think it's a very original build, while still being very Modern competitive if they don't know how to play against it. :)

I have a question. If you have phrexian unlife out and the opponent is about to deal combat damage, will angle's grace be of any use since they are dealing infect damage and not affecting your life total??? Now that I've thought about it i think it might not be of any use but I'm no professional.

It depends if you are above or below 0. If you are above zero, the damage from the combat step won't be infect, and therefore you could use Angel's Grace to keep your life total at 1, or you could take the damage and be at 0 or below. If you are already below zero, then the damage is in poison counters and not affecting your life total, so casting Angel's Grace won't put you back at 1. You won't lose that turn if the infect damage is lethal, but you will at your next upkeep.

OOHHH I just reread phrexian unlife and noticed it only does infect if you are at 0 or less life. and if you are above zero life and have Wall of Blood then you can sacrifice infinite life on him right?

Unfortunately no, because you can't pay life you don't have, even if you wouldn't lose because of it. :P If I'm at 1, I can't cast Apostle's Blessing by paying the Phyrexian white cost, for example. However, life loss isn't damage, so I can cast Spoils of the Vault and go to a negative life total for a card if I have the Phyrexian Unlife out.

Okay so if the life lost is part of the casting cost then you can't do that. but if it is just a negative side effect of the spell then you can do that. So you can put yourself past 0 with Read the Bones?

Yep, you sure can :) Though this deck doesn't really need it with the amount of cards you can dig through with Spoils of the Vault and Plunge into Darkness.

Platinum Angel is a ridiculously high drop for this deck to pull off, and it dies really easy. :P

I like Gods Willing, but Apostle's Blessing serves a dual purpose in this deck. One, it's one of the only protection spells that can give protection from artifacts, and two, the Phyrexian mana can lower my life total and buff the Shadow by paying the life.
