The Deck

Are you looking for a fun and explosive Anje Falkenrath decklist with a fun win condition? Well, you've come to the right place! When I first saw Anje and the potential for reanimation strategies as well as filling up the yard, it immediately reminded me of the Living End modern deck that cycles a bunch of creatures and then get them all back for a huge army. Anje's rummaging ability also synergies really well with a reanimation strategy which goes hand-in-hand with Living Death as well.

Summary

This is a hyper-acceleration reanimator deck built around landing an early reanimated fatty with the inevitability of Living Death (LD). I included most of the relevant fast mana available in order to get an explosive early game at a higher frequency. The deck aims to hyper-accelerate into a fatty by turn 2 or 3 with Anje rummaging through our library to find more action into the later parts of the game. LD is a great card that lets me turn all of my rummaged creatures into game ending threats. Similar to the WD combo, once an infinite LD loop is established (see "win conditions" section for more info), Anje can essentially rummage infinite times into a win.

Pros

  • Anje has a pretty cheap casting cost and can come out early to start the rummaging engine.
  • The deck uses Anje early game for setting up the boardstate but the deck can basically operate without her (albeit less efficiently) mid to late game if she gets hated out.

Cons

  • Madness cards are just very mediocre and inefficient without Anje.
  • The deck needs Anje early on to function and if she gets countered or removed early game it can pretty much set us back significantly.
  • An early Cursed Totem or Linvala, Keeper of Silence is absolutely devastating to our gameplan.
  • Graveyard hate pretty much wreck this deck.

This deck is on the expensive side for the fast and explosive start. Most of the costs come from the tutors, fetches/duals, and mana rocks which can definitely be replaced with a budget friendly version:

Strategy

This deck does really well with London mulligan and you should mulligan aggressively to keep a hand that have a rummage/looting effect + 2/3 lands, 2 lands + ramp, or 3 lands. The goal is to get Anje out first and start rummaging through our deck which will smooth out our curve. Anje's the most useful early game and gets delegated to a more supportive role once I've established my board state via reanimation spells.

Since this is a deck build around Living Death , I have included every madness creature and impactful fatties to rummage through with Anje. Tortured Existence serves as an important madness engine for Anje to allow me to swap a non-madness creature for one to untap her and continue her rummaging engine. This deck has been a blast so far and extremely fun to pilot. The deck operates on a trajectory of three progressing parts:

  1. Reanimator Plan (T1-5): Find a way to bin a fatty like Sire Of Insanity / Sheoldred, Whispering One / Void Winnower into the yard with either Anje or a discard effect to get it into play early game to disrupt my opponents. One of my favorite fatty to reanimate is Vilis, Broker of Blood as you can essentially draw 2 cards for every spent to refill your hand real quick. This will probably not win us the game but will buy us enough time to proceed to the next part of our gameplan.

  2. Grind Plan (T6-9): Our fatty will most probably eat a removal at this point which is fine. The next step is to hopefully get one of our value engines set up (Anje + Tort Ex) and start grinding our opponents out. Sometimes we can be lucky and rummage into our game winning combo with LD (see below) but due to the disruptive nature of multiplayer games this can be rather difficult to accomplish.

  3. Living Death Plan (T10 onwards): At this point our yard should be fully stocked with a bunch of creatures rummaged away by Anje or killed in action. The most important creature to put in the yard is Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed (with altar in play). Having Leyline of the Void in play helps exile all of our opponents' creatures and prevent any triggers that can be detrimental to our boardstate. Find the right window to resolve LD and it should generate a bunch of hasted creatures to overwhelm our opponents or generate infinite mana (with Phyrexian Altar ) to rummage into a win with Anje.

Win Conditions

The usual way our deck wins is either via reanimated fatty beats or a one-sided Living Death to bring back an army of creatures from the yard to hopefully swing for lethal. We can assemble an infinite LD loop pretty easily especially with tutors and Anje's rummaging. We also have the good ole' Worldgorger Dragon combo as a fallback. This loop essentially plays out very similarly to the WD loop but is more suitable in a lower power level pod:

The following are retired combos:

  • Living Death + Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed + Dockside Extortionist (both in the yard) = As long as my opponents have collectively at least 10 noncreature enchantments/artifacts in play, this combo will give me infinite Living Death to instantly win with Anje Falkenrath (for infinite rummaging into a drain effect) or any of the drain effects like Gary in play. Cast LD to bring back Xiahou and Dockside which will create at least 10 treasure tokens. Sac Xiahou to get LD back to hand and sac 5 treasures to cast LD. Xiahou will return to play with Dockside in the yard. Sac Xiahou to get LD back to hand and sac 5 treasures to cast LD again which will return Xiahou and Dockside back to play. Repeat the loop ad infinitum. This combo works by itself and only requires opponents to collectively have 5 noncreature artifacts/enchantments without Anje if you include Sling-Gang Lieutenant in the deck.

  • Necrotic Ooze (in play) + Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker & Mogg Fanatic (in yard) = Infinite damage to opponents by creating infinite tokens with kiki ability and then sac themselves to mogg's ability.

  • Feldon of the Third Path + Balthor the Defiled (in yard) = Reusable one-sided living death effect.
