Kiki-Jiki Primer!

Introduction

Why Kiki-Jiki? Show

Kiki-Jiki embodies three of the most important questions in EDH: is it mono-colored? does it lead to degenerate combos? and does it have goblins?

The unequivocal answer to all three questions is yes. Thus begins my love for this commander and his shenanigans.

Kiki-Jiki was a typical Akki on the planes of Kamigawa, after pranking his tribe leader he was banished. In his banishment he stumbled onto the dragon Keiga who tasked him with stealing an ancient pearl from Meloku. In trying to find it he discovered one of Soratami's mirrors and noticed his reflection moving independently. He smashed the mirror releasing his reflection into the world and accomplished his goal.

Brief Power Level Description Show

This deck is neither casual nor competitive, it exists somewhere in a turn 3-5 win in a vacuum. The decrease in competitiveness stems from low levels of interaction with opponents instants, and enchantments. The speed could be increased by the addition of high dollar mana rocks.

Mana Rocks Show

The deck requires a decent mana investment to get the combo online. To do this we deal with all of the classics, and some mana rocks that are tolerable. The list in order of raw usefulness reads:

Kiki's Criters Show

Kiki-Jiki is the king of abusing ETB effects, therefore it would make sense to fill the deck with interesting and toolbox ETB type creatures. Aside from the obvious (or not so obvious) combos from before there are also some just useful synergies that include but are not limited to:

• Hoarding Dragon to find: Thornbite Staff
• Godo, Bandit Warlord to find: Thornbite Staff
• Goblin Recruiter for finding any and all interesting goblins
• Dualcaster Mage for interacting with instants and sorceries
• Emrakul's Hatcher for mana and sac targets
• Mindclaw Shaman for seeing opponents hands and interacting with instants and sorceries

Degenerate Spells and ETB Show

Red EDH has historically lacked in a few areas, most notably control methods. In EDH red has an incredible opportunity to lock people out if you are in a competitive enough meta (or you don't mind not being invited back). These spells come in the form of land destruction or negation. The key methods for doing this come in the form of the classics:

• Blood Moon hurts multicolored decks by converting their mana base to red or colorless.
• Price of Glory destroys their lands if they try and interact during your turn (one of the few things to stop counter magic.)

Piloting the Deck

Early Game Show

As mentioned in the mana rock section above, this deck requires a decent amount of mana to both function and to combo off. With this in mind the opening hand needs a minimum of three lands unless there is a mana rock with cmc of 2 or less then you can try the two mana with the rock.

Late Game Show

Towards the late game (typically turn 3-7 in a vacuum with good mana rocks) we want to assemble the combo pieces as seen in the combo section above. To do this we use something like Godo, Bandit Warlord to get Thornbite Staff and combo off. Another key is getting Zealous Conscripts to finish the game with infinite hastey creatures.
