1/2 Burn, 1/2 Zoo. Solid deck all around

With aether revolt coming in, I decided to switch out Loam Lion for the new Narnam Renegade. With 12 fetches, its a 2/3 as well for the same one mana but adds deathtouch. Also decided to try out Ancient Grudge over Destructive Revelry. Havent been facing many dangerous enchantments so I think the flashback is more important.

Loam Lion would be good in here. Grim Lavamancer and maybe Steppe Lynx look good.

If you have the budget for it, try and add in a couple Arid Mesa for some of the fetches you already have in. It is good to have diverse nonbasic lands against Surgical Extraction or Extirpate

jacobfragoza4 says... #6

Thanks awesome511! Im actually working on getting a playset of arid mesa and a playset of goblin guides. Im gonna run 12 fetches and 5 shocks for a grand total of 3 basics lol. I also plan on taking out burning tree for the guides because its the card that makes the most sense to replace. I would take out experiment one instead but that only leaves nacatl for a green creature which would make burning tree less useful anyways.

Lightning Helix seems a bit out of place, I'd try some Reckless Bushwhackers in their place.

wherewholf says... #10

I've found Dryad Arbor and Reckless Bushwhacker to be excellent additions to this sort of list. 4 Path to Exile seems like too many for your game plan. Maybe Rancor or Mutagenic Growth or even Ghor-Clan Rampager instead of them. Then you can cut your solo basic Plains for a Dryad Arbor if you still think you need 20 lands - I've seen lists go as low as 18.

Thanks guys! Will update the list as soon as i can

August 3, 2016 1:25 p.m.

thomashapp71 says... #12

I like Ghor-Clan Rampager here. It acts a lot like Boros Charm in that in is two mana for 4 damage, but it also also you to swing thought a blocking creature. I like it in my build Micro Zoo Brew.

This seems like two of my decks made a baby. Reckless Zoo Variant and Naya Burn.

My fear with your deck is that you're spreading too thin between the two archetypes and wont excel at either game plan. My honest suggestion would be to pick an archetype; creature heavy zoo or straight to the face burn. I can understand the appeal, how much have you play tested this? Is it competitive or casual?

I'm extremely sorry if this came off as aggressive or trolling. +1 for innovation.

August 23, 2016 5:35 p.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #15

bender138 it performs pretty well. My hardest match up tends to be Jund. Despite only running 20 creatures in the main, i usually tend to draw enough creatures to get a good board and then hit hard turn 3 or 4 with atarkas command. With 16 spells of direct damage burn i can burn out an opponent if im forced into not attacking. Ive won some tournaments with it but havent played in many. With friends i tend to win most games. Thanks for the +1 man

After testing your deck a bit I must agree with Bender. By playing an even mix of creatures and burn, some creatures lose their synergy with other creatures. For example: E-One is obviously way better if you can make sure it triggers 2-3 times in the first 3 turns. If that doesnt happen consistently it is probably better to replace it with a burn spell. In the same way your burn spells lose some of their raw power, as your burn wants to go to the face but the damage provided by the creatures can be prevented with blockers or removal or you have to "waste" your burn on blockers.

Your build is definitely strong but if you want to really max out on power I would chose one of the two variants "swarming with Zoo" or "melting face with Burn". As you understandibly don't want to spend a small fortune on Goyfs, I'd recommend the latter. It is also doing very well in big tournaments lately, if that is a concern for you.

If you prefer going on as it is, here are some thoughts for your sideboard:

Obviously I don't know your local meta, but some options to beat the current "top tier" decks are: more Rest in Peace against dredge, Stony Silence against affinity, Spellskite/Engineered Explosives against Infect, Bogles, Death's Shadow and Dragon's Claw or Kor Firewalker against the mirror. You could probably take out Mindcensor, Choke, Molten Rain, Pyroclasm and Ooze.

Hope this helps with your decisions. Have fun with the deck!

jacobfragoza4 says... #17

My deck seems to do really well but your right. In the late game, top decking an experiment one sucks. I want to replace him with another 1 drop creature but I'm not sure which one yet. I would prefer to keep it 20/20/20 as I've done well before but worst case I add extra burn. Picking sideboard cards has always been hard for me, but i did want to remove choke from my sideboard, as blue decks are not dominating the meta at all. Another rest in peace would be smart too. I also like stony silence and could consider that. I want to keep pyroclasm against even smaller aggro decks. Molten rain and ooze could probably come out but aven mindcensor i would probably keep in though. My meta consists of jund, suicide zoo, infect and some RWU decks. Occasional affinity and BW tokens

You said you run 1 drops in the mainboard, so don't suggest Tarmogoyf or Voice of Resurgence. Then you said you run your 2 drops in your sideboard. So, I recommend Tarmogoyf and Voice of Resurgence for your sideboard :P

October 14, 2016 12:28 a.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #19

lol no way, they are great and all but tarmogoyf is way too much money and I don't see a place for voice in the side at the moment. they are great but are more meant towards a more midrange zoo with a higher mana curve. my only creature in my side is scavenging ooze and he is great too but even he rarely sees play in this deck

Voice is good against Burn and Control... lol

jacobfragoza4 says... #21

lol ill have to try it out, I havent had much of a problem vs burn since I mained the 4 lightning helix, control is never a problem, maybe jund I guess but they would just inquisition or thoughtsieze it turn 1 anyways. idk i might side it eventually in place of Scooze

Grafdigger's Cage against Jeskai nahiri so they can't tutor for emrakul, and maybe Crumble to Dust against trim and Zo-Zu the Punisher for scapeshift

October 23, 2016 1:32 p.m.

Eiyros says... #23

Sorry not trim I meant tron

October 23, 2016 1:33 p.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #24

Thanks Eiyros for the comments. Grafdigger's Cage is a strong possibility for this deck as I'm working on my sideboard at the moment. I love crumble to dust but unfortunately theres no way this decks gonna consistently cast a 4 drop by turn 4, and even if it did turn 4 is probably too late against Tron as they could already have an ugin or karn out. however against Tron I win most games and when I sideboard in, stony silence and deflecting palm usually are enough. Zo-Zu the Punisher is awesome but I don't see much scapeshift in my meta. He is still a maybe though. Just not sure if I need grafdiggers because I have hallowed moonlight which takes care of emrakul in any deck as well as deflecting palm which doesn't target, will hit them for 15. although with blue in those decks grafdiggers seems smart as remand could stop me pretty easily

Cut two path to exiles for 2 Smuggler's Copter

November 20, 2016 1:06 p.m.

A card I really like in these decks are Scythe Leopard. Yeah everyone says it's a little slow but still you can get it to a 3/3 turn two with the fetchlands in the deck. Plus playing two Monastery Swiftspear the same turn. 5 point life swing is fantastic turn two.

November 22, 2016 9:44 a.m.

sunshine1223 Smuggler's Copter is to slow for a Naya Zoo deck because of all of the crewing involved. This can waste some attacks and make the deck a turn slower. Another suggestion would be to cut 2 Boros Charm 2 Path to Exile for Loam Lionand Kird Ape There's not enough creatures in this deck to be as fast as normal Naya Zoo deck.

November 22, 2016 9:49 a.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #30

I run loam lion, I didn't notice experiment one was still in this list. Loam lion definitely beats experiment one because top decking an experiment one is the worst feeling. I may cut some paths and boros in the future if i find another creature to put in. I like the suggestion of scythe Leopard but in a naya zoo build if you have landfall your running Steppe Lynx instead. That card gets nuts with Atarka's Command

November 22, 2016 10:07 a.m.

I am running a very similar zoo/ burn list. I would suggest taking out the Experiment Ones for something much more useful like Voice of Resurgence. In my practice, if a game goes past the first few turns you need some bigger, more effective creatures on the field or you will just stall out when you run out of cards in hand. Another good one with how many fetch lands you have is Knight of the Reliquary. It becomes a heavy hitter/ big butt blocker late game when you need an impactful board.

November 25, 2016 10:13 a.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #32

I appreciate it. I don't know why experiment one keeps coming up in this list but I stopped running it. I run loam lion now

November 25, 2016 10:21 a.m.

hunkers says... #33

Your Experiment Ones will fizzle to often late game and sometimes early game. Steppe Lynx or Loam Lion is better.

jacobfragoza4 says... #36

Oh wow nice. Yeah i kept forgetting to change him out. I've actually been testing loam lion for about 2 months now and he really is better. Just a white kird ape. Experiment one was good when I ran burning tree emissary but not so good anymore

TheHelvault says... #37

Hey man! I'd suggest some 2-mana artifact hate like Ancient Grudge. I played this Zoo build against my Stax build, and a Chalice of the Void for 1 really screws you over lol. Otherwise, this deck is pretty sick, +1

December 19, 2016 1:17 a.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #38

Thanks for the comment man! TheHelvault

I was thinking about chalice, such a douchey card lol. Was thinking of putting Destructive Revelry back in the deck. That one mana difference might really screw me over, and revelry will shock them, as well as have enchantment targets. But i will playtest ancient grudge as well. I actually like the card I just wish it could hit enchantments too

CommanderNeyo says... #39

Nice deck, I really like the mix of Zoo and Burn. For a budget version, what would you recommend to replace Goblin Guide and Path to Exile?

December 24, 2016 12:44 a.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #40

Thanks CommanderNeyo! Well if you wanted to keep it similar to mine where it's only 1 drops except for Lightning Helix and Atarka's Command, you won't find anyone as fast as goblin guide. So you would want to trade speed for a bigger body. If you could turn 1 an Experiment One, he would be a 3/3 on turn 2 in this deck, however I found him less reliable. Steppe Lynx would be a good one though for this deck. You could swing for 2-4 on turn 2 or more with an atarkas command. As far as Path to Exile goes, that is a key card to the deck in most cases. Theres many times lightning bolt isnt enough to kill a pesky creature, so path comes in handy. However if sorcery speed isnt an issue, you could try Chained to the Rocks. Only other option I could see is Reciprocate, but that's not nearly as good as Path.

You could always proxy at first until you have the money for the cards. But if not these are probably the best runner ups. Hope I helped!

m0x says... #41

I know you said you didn't want 2 drop creatures in the main, but have you considered Burning-Tree Emissary?

Also, main board Path to Exile seems out of place, how about Searing Blaze or Rift Bolt instead?

January 4, 2017 12:59 a.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #42

Yeah I used to run burning tree when I was less heavy on white, but I felt I didn't get enough value out of it. Most of the time I only got one card cast with it, so I'd get a 2/2 and a 2/3 or 3/3 but it wasn't worth it unless I could cast 2 free creatures with it. My decks a tad slower without it, since it could help me win turn 3 with an atarkas command back then. Path definitely gets the job done, I love having a playset in the main. Searing blaze and rift bolt are both really good cards but this deck isnt completely a burn deck

jacobfragoza4 says... #44

Thank you sir, I will take a look at it. I changed out my destructive revelry for ancient grudge, since the shock is relevant but flashback is more important and my meta doesn't have much enchantments to deal with. I also replaced loam lion with the new narnam renegade which is the exact same thing a 1 mana 2/3 but with deathtouch and its green instead of white. I think it was a pretty solid upgrade

Looks fun. I may end up making this kind of shift with my Zoo deck. I really like this a lot!!

April 13, 2017 1:16 p.m.

jacobfragoza4 says... #48

It's not as explosive as a bushwhacker zoo deck but its still consistent and fast. Certain games against faster decks like affinity and infect, you become the control deck and run cards like pyroclasm and deflecting palm. (Pyroclasm is super good in my deck because the only creature that I can lose is goblin guide). I've had success with FNM tournaments against all the top tier net decks and i win against death shadow decks most of the time, just holding burn spells. I actually want to bring this to a big event soon. No one even expects zoo at any big event, when people just copy and paste the most popular decks

April 13, 2017 1:29 p.m.

Personally, I'd replace the Kird Apes with Fleecemane Lion
