Description

This is a deck I have always considered building but I never really knew where to start with it. D&T is a type of deck that I am intrigued by as it is nearly control but still its own idea. This description will be updated as I work on this deck and attempt to make it better.

Leonin Arbiter

D&T is a creature heavy deck that focuses on cards that make it difficult for your opponent to play magic. The overall goal is to force your opponent to make moves that they wouldn't necessarily want to make before playing a bigger threat once your opponents resources are spent.

Archangel of Tithes: Taxes my opponent's ability to attack and block in addition to being a solid beater if needed. This card replaces Ghostly Prison which is negatively affected by other cards in the deck.

Brimaz, King of Oreskos: Cheap, efficient, and reliable. He is a reliable beater that also spawns additional creatures. Give him protection via Mother of Runes when attacking and let your field grow.

Flickerwisp: Can serve a few purposes here. First, it can be used to remove a blocker to free up an attack. Second, it can be used to turn a tapped creature into a blocker allowing some flexibility. Third, it can be chained with Palace Jailer or Phyrexian Revoker if you lose the Monarch or screw up your sequencing.

Judge's Familiar: Probably a weird addition, I find this little guy useful in slowing down my opponents. Dropping it turn one can protect me from a stupid Simian Spirit Guide + burn spell combo, or a Thoughtseize. It serves to slow down my opponents. Additionally, if nothing else it is a body in the air.

Leonin Arbiter: Slows down decks that like to RAMP and adds an additional cost to tutors. He is also a cheap body that is nice to populate the board. If you want some extra hate in the deck combo him with Aven Mindcensor, and then watch tutor heavy decks fold.

Mother of Runes: In a deck with a lot of low toughness and damage creatures, this card allows the deck to always have blockers, and if necessary, it clears the way for beaters. She can also be used to protect from removal giving protection. This is your most important one-drop and should always be in your deck.

Palace Jailer: This card came as a bit of a shock to me. When I was first told about it I thought, "why would I play that when I could use Fiend Hunter, Banisher Priest, or Mangara of Corondor?" Well after a bit of playtesting I found that Palace Jailer is a great fit. D&T does a good job of holding onto the monarchy and that extra card draw has won me games. 4-mana isn't bad considering you want to be pretty established when you play this card.

Phyrexian Revoker: Used to shut down your opponents field. There is nothing more satisfying than playing a Revoker on a Noble Hierarch or Lotus Petal.

Serra Avenger: Simply said, it is an efficient beater that can always block.

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben: Four of the eight Thalia's in this deck. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben slows down my opponent and can even destroy certain combos. ANT decks and Weirdstorm become a hastle to play, and removal becomes more expensive.

Thalia, Heretic Cathar: Another hate card, this Thalia impedes my opponents ability to build and can be game over for rush decks.

Because of Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, there are not tons of non-creature spells in the deck. The cards that are here are cheap and effective, the goal of them is to provide some additional control.

Ethereal Haze: I am likely going to take this card out and replace it with more tax cards. As is though, it can potentially save me if my opponent is able to build. At one CMC it isn't a big deal when Thalia is out, but I'm sure I can find something better.

Swords to Plowshares: Cheap effective removal. I play this over Path to Exile mainly for budget considerations, and giving my opponent a bit of life usually isn't the worst thing that can happen.

(Coming Soon)
The sideboard needs a lot of help and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Aegis of Honor: Slows down burn decks and acts as a Deflecting Palm. I am considering dropping it for Warmth but I need more opinions.

Demystify: In my playgroup there is an enchantment deck and I needed ways to slow it down. Better options are welcome.

Dryad Militant: Similar to the last card, there is a control deck that makes use of Elixir of Immortality and Call to Mind and this card serves to make those largely useless.

Ethersworn Canonist: Shuts down rush and storm decks, and also serves to end some combos within elves.

Kataki, War's Wage: An additional hate card that targets artifacts and is the bane of affinity and equipment heavy decks.

Paraselene: Mass enchantment removal, if you can't tell I don't like enchantments.

Rest in Peace: Shuts down dredge and reanimater based strategies.

Ghostly Prison and Ethereal Haze can both be replaced by Dawn Charm.. or Archangel of Tithes

here is my deck if you like suggestions or want to playtest against: Schwarze Sonne vs. death & taxes

Thanks huschli, I will definitely use your deck to playtest against it seems that is a great way to check the viability of my deck. Archangel of Tithes is a cool card and i took out the Ghostly Prison's for it. Ethereal Haze is there for now, I am going to keep looking for a better option. Thanks for the help.

I'd work on your mana base. Part of death and taxes' power is being able to control your opponents lands and this is often done with your own lands

Rishadan Port and Wasteland are both normally 4-ofs. Your curve is relatively low and so porting down a land on their upkeep or simply wasting it can make your thalia's that much more brutal.

Karakas is often commonly played to bounce your thalias if they have removal or bounce any legends your opponents play.

Here's a link to a death and taxes build by channelfireball. They explain the cards in it and why they work for the deck. Worth a read if you have the time

Thanks Firebones675, I know the mana base is shocking, I just have not had any time to go through what I have and update it. Rishadan Port and Wasteland are musts, I am aware. And Karakas makes for some interesting interactions that I am excited to try out. Cavern of Souls is another land that could find a home here. Thanks for the help.
