Maybeboard

Welcome to my latest deck! I've been meaning to build a deck around The Scorpion God ever since he was first spoiled, but I just couldn't seem to find a list that I was happy with. Fast forward to now, and this just might be my favorite deck to play.

You might like the Scorpion God if:

  • You like your commander being a major part of your deck's strategy.
  • You enjoy grindy, midrange-y decks.
  • You like winning with commander damage.
  • You like messing with your opponents during their turns.
  • You like killing creatures. Like, a lot.
  • You enjoy playing decks that are threatening while still being a little gimmicky.

You might not enjoy the Scorpion God if:

  • You suck.
  • You like allowing your opponents to have permanents.
  • You don't like having fun.
  • You want to be able to kill enchantments easily. It's, uh, not really Rakdos' thing.

No Scorpion God deck would be complete without some way to generate -1/-1 counters. His activated ability is pretty inefficient, so if you're relying on him for all your countery goodness you're gonna have a bad time. Unfortunately, B/R doesn't have access to that many good -1/-1 counter cards, but that's not gonna stop us from running the best ones here.

  • Corrosive Mentor: Give all your black creatures Wither. We like Wither.
  • Everlasting Torment: One of the main reasons this deck is even worth playing. Turns ALL damage into -1/-1 counters for Scorpion God to abuse, while simultaneously shutting off lifegain bullshit. This is probably the first card you'll tutor for.
  • Fists of the Demigod: Wither + First Strike is an awesome combination. Stick this on your commander and there's not much that will be able to beat it in a fight.
  • Glistening Oil: Versatile card that can either let you steal an infect win or act as repeated, albeit slow, removal for you opponents' creatures.
  • Grafted Exoskeleton: Give somebody infect and start swinging. Either you kill someone, or they block and you get to draw from TSG when the blocker dies.
  • Kulrath Knight: Really fucks with everyone else's ability to do combat. Eldrazi titans are a lot less threatening when they can't attack or block.
  • Midnight Banshee: Pretty much the second best creature in the 99 after Carnifex Demon. Banshee passively kills everything that isn't black, netting us plenty of draws from our commander.
  • Necroskitter: If you're playing this deck, you like killing things. You know what's better than killing things? Fucking killing them and taking them.
  • Phyrexian Crusader: This is not an infect deck, I swear. Still, Crusader is an extremely well-costed and threatening card that helps dissuade people from attacking us. And he has protection from red, which means he's untouched by all of our red boardwipes.
  • Phyrexian Vatmother: Surprisingly low CMC lady that dishes out counters and can kill people very quickly
  • Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon: Okay, it might sort of be an infect deck. Skittles does a great job of killing people out of nowhere, and his regeneration means that it's hard for other players to attack into him favorably.

The Scorpion God wants things to die. Your things. Your opponents' things. All things. When things die, you get to draw. And when you draw one of these cards, you get to kill more things! Remember kids, killing things is fun. I'm pretty sure that's in the Bible somewhere.

  • Ashes to Ashes: 3 mana to exile two dangerous creatures? Sign me the hell up. This card takes care of Eldrazi titans all day long.
  • Bedevil: An easy answer to dangerous artifacts or planeswalkers.
  • Dreadbore: Cheaper than Bedevil, but narrower range
  • Black Sun's Zenith: Here it is - the single most powerful removal spell in the deck. Kills anything, even indestructible creatures, and draws you a bunch of cards when the Scorpion God is out.
  • Blasphemous Act: Red's go-to boardwipe, Does a bunch of damage. Things die. You know how it works.
  • By Force: A weaker yet more flexible Vandalblast. Mostly here because I do not, in fact, have a Vandalblast.
  • Chaos Warp: Black and Red don't have many ways of dealing with enchantments. This is the best one. Run the best one.
  • Perilous Vault: Rakdos enchantment sweeper. I'll take what I can get.
  • Glaring Spotlight: Hexproof is kind of a problem for the Scorpion God. This card gets rid of that problem for 1 mana.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation: 1 mana enchantment that provides repeated value. Never play black without it.
  • Rakdos Charm: Will never not be good.
Nothing unique or crazy here, just the standard B/R ramp. The best rocks that cost 2 or less mana that my budget can afford. Darksteel Ingot gets to stay because indestructible is very relevant in my meta, and Worn Powerstone is useful for making sure I get to 5 mana ASAP
The Scorpion God acts as a passable draw engine by himself, but getting access to more cards is EDH 101. More cards = good. These let us get more cards.
  • Diabolic Tutor:If I had more money this would be Demonic Tutor, but I don't, so it isn't.
  • This is a deck of answers. Your opponents are going to play things, you are going to kill those things. Over. And over. And over. Eventually your opponents won't be able to stick any blockers, and that's when you stick an infect enabler on your commander and start killing people. Counting to 10 is a lot easier than counting to 40.

Used properly, The Scorpion God is amazing at disrupting the rest of the table. You primarily want to use his -1/-1 ability at three specific times:

    1. During combat
    2. During your opponent's end step
    3. In response to someone trying to remove him

For the most part, don't bother trying to ping your opponent's larger creatures to death (unless you have nothing else to do with the mana). Just get a single counter in place, then use the rest of your removal to clean things up and get those sweet sweet draws.
