Sideboard


An artifact based deck for standard. Having been an affinity Modern player, I was super excited about all of the artifact love in the core set. I've assembled a sideboard, but it is a 1st draft, so I will update it as I play it. i know that there are quite a few Red/Blue convoke artifact decks out there, so I wanted to offer an alternative. Let's break into the explanation:

4x Darksteel Citadel - Ideal for interaction with Ensoul Artifact, because there is nothing like a 5/5 indestructible creature on turn 2. And there is nothing better than a couple of these monsters on the field in the early game.

4x Ornithopter - Ah sweet Ornithopter , a 0/2 flyer for zero that serves both as a blocker and an enabler for Military Intelligence. Slap an Ensoul Artifact on this, and it's a 5/5 flyer on turn 2, which makes it all the more bad ass. Stormbreath Dragon has nothing on this guy.

4x Chief Engineer - Gives all artifacts convoke, which is surprisingly useful, and he's got a strong enough back side to hold many aggro decks at bay. A worthy addition to the roster.

4x Scuttling Doom Engine - My favorite artifact creature in quite a long time. While being a 6/6 for 6 mana isn't noteworthy, with convoke, this guy hits the field early and he hits it hard. Plus, if he dies, he does not go silently into that quiet night,... he goes kicking and screaming doing 6 damage to your opponent's face! Plus he doesn't die to those pesky 1/1 death touchers, you know who you are.

2x Springleaf Drum - Because artifact deck needs more artifact, and ramp. Can't forget the tasty ramp.

4x Ensoul Artifact - One of the core cards that makes this jumble of cards fun to play. Turn regular boring every day artifacts in 5/5 creatures. Pretty sweet.

2x Soul of New Phyrexia - Because indestructible artifacts are indestructible. Trample-riffic!

4x Goblin Kaboomist - Cause more artifacts for Shrapnel Blast and Ensoul Artifact makes my opponents sad.

2x Hammer of Purphoros - Because haste is important, and so are 3/3s with haste.

4x Shrapnel Blast - Cause 5 to the face hurts, but so does a 6/6 with haste, followed by another 6 on a dead Doom Engine and 5 from the Blast. A 17 point combo to take down opponents fast.

4x Lightning Strike - Cause sometimes those last 3 points of health just need to disappear.

4x Generator Servant - Because red needed ramping and this guy foots the bill with his tiny life, giving them his all.

Updates Add

I've had a good solid run with this deck. So I've been trying out a few of my other standard decks at my new meta. I think it's time this one made a showing, but it needs some work. I haven't updated it to include anything from KTK or FRF. I think for starters, I need to cut Goblin Kaboomist as that little Goblin-y bastard hates my coin flips. My best run with one was 6 turns, but that was a fluke. Most times, I get the one Land Mine and then Ka-Boom, he's dead Jim.

I was considering replacing him with Frost Walker or Mardu Scout. Obviously with Frost Walker I'll want to rescale my islands so I have enough. If I go with Mardu Scout, I'll keep the land base as is. So my simple thoughts on the two choices currently.

Frost Walker though a fragile creature, is a 4/1 beater on turn 2. A turn 2 Frost Walker is a scary sight because they need to address him ASAP. At best, he becomes a magnet for a pump spell or a direct damage spell, forcing my opponent to waste something good on him. If they don't answer for him, 4 to the face is agressive.

As for Mardu Scout, well, "Dash" is a thing and it can be quite powerful. Since his cost is 2 no matter what, I can "Dash" him in, swing, and then I keep him off the field so he isn't a target. 3 damage on turn 2 isn't terrible. Plus he can trade with a lot of stuff if I put him out without "dash."

I'm sure there are other choices, I could just add in some blue counter spells like Negate, or even 4 of the Ghostfire Blades which would give me another target for Ensoul Artifact or pump up some of my already powerful artifacts. My options are near endless, but I think it is time to say goodbye to the very finicky Goblin Kaboomist. I would love to hear some suggestions. Let me know what you folks think.
