Artifact (1)

Description

I can now build a thopter deck, so why not! main idea is to kill with commander damage, voltron style, with some other big artifact bombs like metalwork colossus. got a few gimmicks like planar bridge and paradox engine as well. currently in progress, love suggestions!

number 1 Hope of Ghirapur deck on tappedout since the day it was spoiled! Will be updating soon with how it has developed.

If you need more wrath effects, your only other options are All Is Dust & Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. Brass Squire would also be pretty good with all your equipment.

I would love a Ugin, but do not have one. most of the other expensive cards are ones i own! All is dust might be reasonable

Might I recommend Kusari-Gama? It is an equipment that compares well with Steel Hellkite.

January 19, 2017 1:29 a.m.

Didn't know about that! Going to add it in!

January 19, 2017 10:45 a.m.

some suggestions to speed up your mana would be Thran Dynamo , Voltaic key to untap your bigger mana rocks, and if you can afford one a Mana Vaul and a Mana Crypt .

Then of course there is oblivion stone as an aditional Wipe effect.

If you don't mind going infinite, Rings go infinite with Basalt monolith.

Metalworker is an instant include if you have one, or your group lets you proxy it.

...and of course, the cherry on top, if you're either rich, have played this game for over 20 years, or again, you group lets you proxy whatever you want, The Pimpshop .

January 19, 2017 4:37 p.m.

thran dynamo is in there, planning to add cloud key as well as voltaic key. I do not have the money for either of the big mana artifacts, but i already own an oblivion stone so thats an interesting idea. How does rings of brighthearth go infinite with basalt monolith? Our group only allows proxies if we already own the card or if its under a certain dollar amount like 15$. and metalworker might be out of my pay grade haha

January 19, 2017 4:44 p.m.

Rings of Brighthearth lets you pay 2 mana to copy the Monoliths' untap ability, and looks like this:

  • T: +3 Mana
  • -5 mana: Add two UTs to the cycle
  • UT
  • T: +3 Mana
  • UT
  • End Cycle (with all permanents in their original position and an empty stack.)
  • T: +3 Mana
  • -5 mana: Add two UTs to the cycle
  • UT
  • T: +3 Mana
  • UT
  • End Cycle
  • T: +3 Mana... et c.

As you can see, each cycle you generate +6 mana and -5 mana, resulting in +1 mana per cycle. You will need to invest 2 mana to start the infinite mana each time, but with infinite mana and infinite untapping of an artifact, I'm sure you can find a way to pull that off :)

now if only i could bring myself to sink 25$ into a single card!

January 19, 2017 5:13 p.m.

I would add Terrain Generator as part of your utility lands!

January 19, 2017 5:35 p.m.

honestly, id rather have another waste for strata scythe. and i dont think there will be many opportunities where i have too many lands to play where ill use two mana to use that ability

January 19, 2017 11:57 p.m.

Spine of Ish Sah is always useful, and Scrap Trawler turns it into a two-for-one.

January 25, 2017 2:25 p.m.

No Ornithopter?!?!?!!? For Shame!
jk. love this deck! +1

January 26, 2017 11:02 a.m.

Right, so some things you should look into are Ancestral Statue, Opal Palace, and taking a stand on the use of big artifact creatures versus low to the ground swarms.

To explain the first 2 is simply that you've no real need for Strata Scythe when most of your sideboard equipment will always be far more consistent, and the palace is just a strict upgrade over waste when you don't run the scythe anymore (or an upgrade over something else). Now if you do want to keep the scythe, you're going to need to run many more basics over utility lands, and also run more land ramping cards than you've currently got mainboard, cause its really not worth it otherwise unless you've got other local colorless players.

For the last part about low vs high cost creatures, I feel like you're trying to play too many decks at once by using both. For instance, [[Blightsteel Colossus] is damn good with a [Blade of Selves]], but you're commander can't say the same unless you ran Mirror Gallery. At the same time, the colossus getting +1/+1 from something like Chief of the Foundry isn't quite as impactful late game as it is early game with the commander. You could practically make Ornithopter scary if you had a little bit of ramp, and a lot of equipment early on. What about running the Modular creatures even?

Other colorless decks can't get away with being purely low to the ground swarms of creatures that only need a slight push to become threatening. So personally I see Hope of Ghirapur much better in a sort of aggro/voltron build instead of a voltron/battlecruiser one that you have here. But of course this may work better for your meta so whatever works for ya.

January 27, 2017 11:31 a.m.

Opal palace doesn't work in colorless since the thopter has no color identity. Opal palaces ability would not generate any mana and then you can't use it. I will consider your thought on Aggro though. I think I've done a pretty good job clearly defining that all of my equipments are tiny and all of my creatures are either huge or have specific utility for the thopter commander

January 27, 2017 4:14 p.m.

Wwelp, I've got a couple of commander games I need to redo now. I didn't win them mind you, but I still need to replay them.

January 27, 2017 4:20 p.m.

no worries, ive been confused with it before as well

January 27, 2017 4:27 p.m.

No Metalworker and fancier mana rocks?

Umezawa's Jitte is noticeably absent too.

January 31, 2017 2:53 p.m.

Wait, who said that Opal Palace won't work?

That would have been true years ago, but since they changed the rules around color identity and mana in commander you can generate any color mana.

1T, make a Green mana, pay for your commander with it.

Also, you desperately need an Umezawa's Jitte here ;)

January 31, 2017 4:19 p.m.

Daedalus19876 Wasn't me, but I thought that you couldn't choose colorless as a color.

January 31, 2017 7:15 p.m.

soymonk: You cannot choose colorless as a color, but you could generate green (or whatever color you choose) and pay HoG's cost with that green mana.

They really messed things up when they created the Colorless Mana symbol.

January 31, 2017 7:24 p.m.

Daedalus19876 It doesn't work. Opal Palace's second ability generates one mana of "any color in your commander's color identity." HoG's lack of a color identity means there's no valid option of mana you can generate with that ability. The gatherer ruling on colorless commanders says: "If your commander is a card like Kozilek, Butcher of Truth that has no colors in its color identity, Opal Palaces last ability produces no mana."

January 31, 2017 8:53 p.m.

Mxyzptlk: Yep, you are correct. I misread Opal Palace as an upgraded Shimmering Grotto. Mea culpa.

January 31, 2017 8:59 p.m.

@Soymonk unfortunately, I don't really have the expenses for metalworker and jitte right now. most of the expensive cards i already had, and the only cards i got for this deck were under 2$ each. Try not to put too much into new decks!

And yes, opal palace can be confusing, but it definitely doesnt work here!

Droppin some love for Perilous Vault

March 1, 2017 2:22 a.m.

Actually, a bunch of those i have already added, but just havent updated the deck yet.

October 30, 2017 11:26 a.m.

Nice deck! It looked so fun, I made my own ;)

Looking at your sideboard, I would definitely add these to your mainboard:

Some other neat ideas to consider:

Pristine Talisman seems too expensive for what it does. If you were a lifegain deck, then it might be justified but I think a -cost rock like Mind Stone would do you better. This is probably all personal preference, of course. I also avoid Dreamstone Hedron because when I have 6 mana, there's way better things I want to be casting.

I avoided Lightning Greaves in my Hope deck because Shroud prevents you from equipping anything more to that creature (and my Hope deck is all about equipping my commander). I also skipped out on Whispersilk Cloak for that reason. You're not all-in on equipment here so this might be less of a concern - the Graves are nice on some of your big scary guys.

I avoided the Urza lands because I have such little tutor ability that I wouldn't waste it looking for a land. I figure the odds of me ever getting all 3 Urza lands into play during a game were slim to none, and I'd rather more basics for Strata Scythe.

Similar to my case against the Urza lands, I skipped the Helm of Kaldra, Shield of Kaldra, Sword of Kaldra cycle because it'll be a rare event to ever get them all into play. On their own they're each okay, but I have other equipment that does similar things (often for less mana).

I agree with you on Terrain Generator: It's hard to imagine having a hand full of land and nothing else to do that I want to pay to drop another land. I included it in an early list of my own deck but replaced it with another Wastes.

I haven't seen Lifeline before! Looking it up, they changed the ruling so it impacts all players. Still more beneficial to you?

Not of This World seems pretty good, but I wonder if it's too conditional or win-more? I used to run it in an Eldrazi deck I have but I found I spent most of the game with it sitting useless in my hand. It wasn't until later game when I was dropping big scary threats and already ahead that it had any effect. Not a strong opinion here - just feel like most of the time it might be a dead card in hand.

Okay, serious chat time. This is totally just my opinion, feel free to ignore it. But I think TheRedGoat might be right: It feels like you're trying to do two very different strategies at once. The very aggro, cheap-to-cast commander who gets loaded up with equipment and quickly starts applying the commander damage, racing to hit 21. Contrasted against the battlecruiser strat of ramp hard to drop big, scary monsters. Trying to do both at once makes each strategy weaker because you'll regularly run into the wrong cards for what you need. You'll be on turn 2-3, hoping to equip something to Hope before combat and draw into a Platinum Emperion, Planar Bridge or Dreamstone Hedron.

There's a really fun solution to this problem though: Build a separate battlecruiser deck! Make a mono-green ramp deck, move alllll your big scary colourless fatties over to it and tweak this Thopter deck to really take advantage of aggressive Hope. Eat your cake and have it too!

Okay enough of that. This deck does look really fun to play. And I'm very jealous you have all 5 swords. Someday I'll get there :)

January 4, 2018 2:50 a.m.

Its funny you say that because my deck is at my college and it has actually changed significantly since i last updated this list. a lot of those big creatures are gone and a lot of the cuts you suggested and add ins you suggested i've already done! I will be updating it soon. I don't have the time to asnwer all of your questions this second, but will get to them later in the day!
