My friends and I have challenged each other to the following deck-building challenge:

  • The Deck (including Commander), minus basic lands and lands that cost less than $0.25, must not exceed $25 via TCG player.

There seems to be a bit of fudging here and there on this, but the decks certainly shouldn't exceed $30 for the above at the time of this writing.

Ramp and protect our board until we can win with one of three primary strategies:

  1. Win by using our land ramp as a weapon with Rude Awakening, Sylvan Awakening, or Hurricane

  2. Win by combo'ing into the above while drawing with our commander and Psychosis Crawler

  3. Win by swinging a lot of creatures at them with Sporemound, Zendikar's Roil, Rampaging Baloths, or Meloku the Clouded Mirror

We are looking for things that enable our combos:

  • Vedalken AEthermage: This can help us find any of our "Land Bounce" minions or Archaeomancer, all of which can help with activating combos.

  • Drift of Phantasms: This helps us find our most important combo pieces depending on our strategy, namely Retreat to Coralhelm or Ghostly Flicker. Of course, it can also help us find some of our ramp cards as well.

  • Fierce Empath: While there aren't many targets for this, it importantly helps us grab Brutalizer Exarch, or Uyo, Silent Prophet, both of which can help with enabling combos. It can also grab us Rampaging Baloths, which is probably the best creature generator in the deck and could be considered an important combo piece when infinite land bounce is possible.

  • Noble Benefactor: This can help us find any of our combo pieces or anything we really need in the moment, as the card implies.

  • Brutalizer Exarch: On top of helping us find all of the creatures already mentioned in this section, this can also help us find our "Extra Land" creatures, Mnemonic Wall, or Peregrine Drake.

  • Sylvan Scrying: Helps us find our bounce lands (Simic Growth Chamber, Jungle Basin, or Coral Atoll), or helps us find Mystic Sanctuary

  • I don't believe these are all of the combos in the deck, but I'll write out a few:

  • Peregrine Drake + Ghostly Flicker + Mystic Sanctuary + Tatyova, Benthic Druid = Infinite mana (get infinite mana first before flickering two lands to draw library), draw, landfall, and life.

  • Peregrine Drake + Ghostly Flicker + Archaeomancer/Mnemonic Wall = Infinite mana.

  • Stone-Seeder Hierophant + Tatyova, Benthic Druid + Ghostly Flicker + Mystic Sanctuary = Infinite mana, life, draw, and landfall.

  • Retreat to Coralhelm + any "Land Bounce" creature or land + any "Extra Lands" creature = Infinite landfall and mana.

  • Uyo, Silent Prophet + any "Extra Land" creature + Retreat to Coralhelm + any instant or sorcery spell = infinite copies of said spell (any of the ramp spells that bring in lands untapped or Hurricane would be great choices for this). Note that this can be done on any opponent's turn with one of their spells as well.

  • As a final note, for any of the infinite land bounce combos above, Sunscorched Desert provides infinite damage.

    If you want to upgrade this deck, I would suggest the following cards:

    1. Mill win con: Laboratory Maniac or Thassa's Oracle

    2. Minion win con: Avenger of Zendikar

    3. Extra Draw: Horn of Greed

    4. Extra Mana: Lotus Cobra or Burgeoning

    5. Improving our Current Strategy: Patron of the Moon

    After some play testing, I think I would actually cut the "combo-pieces" section for the above. The flicker combos are more difficult to pull off and don't synergize as well with the rest of the deck, but I'm definitely not certain of that.
