Maybeboard

This deck is a fast combo deck centered around 3 basic combos, seeking to win on turns 1-4 with protection. It is the product of the work of both myself and Lilbrudder (whose list can be found here Trouble Comes In Threes).

The initial iteration of this deck were clunky and had too many combos, which slowed the deck down, though it did get average wins T4-5. Still, not good enough to compete with the best. Many playtests later, we have what we believe to be the best version of the deck. There are some differences between my deck and Lilbrudder's. That has changed, it seems, but I still run Necropotence , for now. I feel that with our fast mana package, as long as we can flip enough over (the deck's average cmc is less than 1 for this reason) we can win that turn. Five mana to win at instant speed is pretty good.

The three main combos are as follows:

  • Animate Dead/ Dance of the Dead + Worldgorger Dragon + Breya, Etherium Shaper: generate infinite colored mana and shoot our opponents to death. Note: this combo requires us to have a way to break the cycle, so putting a creature in the graveyard, bouncing George, or other such shenanigans are necessary.
  • Auriok Salvagers + Lion's Eye Diamond + Breya, Etherium Shaper: generate infinite colored mana and win as above. This combo removes our hand, though, so cards like Silence, Grand Abolisher, and Mausoleum Wanderer help a lot.
  • Laboratory Maniac + Tainted Pact: seems easy enough. Exile the library, draw, and win. Free wins are pretty cool.
  • All of the above combos can fit into a Doomsday pile, which makes them even more versatile, and with a cantrip in hand, we win when we resolve DD.

But Breya ain't all beer and skittles. Cards that shut down activated abilities or stop us from casting Breya are hard to beat. Artifact hate is tough. A well-timed kill spell or Trickbind can leave us with an exiled board and a flush of embarrassment when we are looping George. Rest in Peace leaves us resting in peace. Grafdigger's Cage is a pain. How do we get around this? See the cards in the Utility Suite. Or we just beat them to it.

As with many competitive EDH decks, Breya requires a lot of fast mana to be consistent.

  • Chrome Mox - we can get rid of a less relevant card to get some manas but only of that card's colors. Cool. Does not play well with the Dragon Combo though, so keep that in mind.
  • Dark Ritual - +2 net. works well with Ad Nauseam and Necropotence .
  • Dimir Signet & Izzet Signet - not great, but they do filter our mana for us. Works well when we have painlands for the George combo.
  • Grim Monolith - +1 net. It isn't broken here like it is in artifact-centric decks, but does good work.
  • Lion's Eye Diamond - more of a combo piece or a part of a Doomsday pile, but in a pinch it can get us some mana - at the small price of our hand. Protip: sac this in response to casting a wheel effect so you can have a better chance of casting what you draw.
  • Lotus Petal - one free mana of any color? Good! This makes our payoff from AdNaus even better, as it gives us a way to start generating mana.
  • Mana Crypt & Sol Ring - only one of these has a downside, and we don't really care about it. This much mana for this little cost is too good.
  • Mana Vault - like Grim Monolith, it isn't great here, but it does its good work well. Think of it as a colorless Dark Ritual.
  • Mox Diamond - discard a land to get a rainbow mox. It's great, although with only 32 lands we can sometimes be hard-pressed to get it online.
  • Mox Opal - not as good here as it is in an artifact-centric deck, but we run enough to make it worthwhile.
  • Talisman of Dominance , Talisman of Indulgence, & Talisman of Progress - They are better than the signets here because we can get mana without having any other sources available. Do not play well with George.

    Updates Add

I rebuilt the deck from the ground up. I felt that I was trying too hard to make this an "artifact" deck, and less a combo deck. The previous version started off with a Sharuum shell, but Sharuum and Breya are quite different. So, I threw out the list and made a new one from scratch, which will hopefully work better. Thanks for everyone who is upvoting/helping me build this!
