Urza, Lord High Artificer cEDH

I've been working on this list and tweaking it on Archidekt since Urza was first announced! Just moved it here to TappedOut recently so I could write this little guide as well.

Plan of Attack

The focus of this deck is on 20 tutors to build combos

There are a lot of tutor lines, allowing you to use a tutor to find a different tutor until you get the card you need.

• Expedition Map can be used to tutor Ancient Tomb if you need mana, Buried Ruin if you need a card from your graveyard, Inventors' Fair if you need a specific artifact, or even Tolaria West if you want to find a 0-drop like Pact of Negation or Walking Ballista

• Citanul Flute is one of my favorite additions from my old cEDH Arcum Dagsson deck. It allows you to repeatedly tutor up creatures you might need, like Myr Retriever , Pili-Pala , Spellseeker , Grand Architect etc.

• Spellseeker is great for finding nearly any instant or sorcery from the deck, depending on what you need.

• Tribute Mage , Trinket Mage , Trophy Mage are great tutors on bodies. Can find many useful artifacts, and they themselves can be tutored with Citanul Flute

• Arcum Dagsson holds a special place in my heart.. he was my first competitive commander. There aren't a ton of great sac targets, but he can trigger Myr Retriever or Junk Diver type effects, and can be a cheap way to get out a Mycosynth Lattice or Spine of Ish Sah

• Personal Tutor , Mystical Tutor , and Merchant Scroll are self explanatory. Cheap and can find eachother, artifact tutors, or other relevant instants/sorceries

• There are several artifact tutors in Whir of Invention (Instant speed with Improvise) and Reshape (2 CMC so can be found by Spellseeker , etc). Fabricate , and Inventors' Fair are also alright, but they put the chosen artifact into your hand, so keep that in mind.

• Intuition is a great way to bluff threats and find pieces you need. You can either choose an artifact you need with Codex Shredder and Buried Ruin so you will get the card you want either way, or else threaten multiple different combos. For example, if you have an artifact tutor in hand, a good set of Intuition targets might be Grand Architect , Dramatic Reversal , and Rings of Brighthearth so that regardless of what they give you, you can still assemble a combo. You very rarely want to target multiple pieces of the same combo

• Tezzeret the Seeker is great to tutor an artifact with CMC 4 or less.. you could also use it to untap artifacts in some situations

I also feel like Transmute is a really underrated way to tutor cards you couldn't otherwise.

• Tolaria West can find any land, like Inventors' Fair if you need an artifact, or 0-CMC spell like Pact of Negation or Mana Crypt

• Dizzy Spell can find a surprising amount of cards at 1-CMC. Training Grounds is probably the most notable that's hard to find otherwise.

• Muddle the Mixture can also find a useful variety of 2-drops, not to mention it acts as a counterspell in a pinch.

• Drift of Phantasms is a bit of a weird one.. there are a lot of possible 3-CMC artifacts and creatures you can find to complete your combos, but keep in mind it's also the only way to tutor out Narset, Parter of Veils if you already have Teferi's Puzzle Box

Getting Infinite Mana

There are a couple options here:

• Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter with 3+ artifacts. Requires Urza on board.

• Basalt Monolith with Rings of Brighthearth . Works before you get Urza out, but only for colorless mana, so you still need to keep up UU to cast Urza. If you already have him out, once you make infinite colorless, you can tap Basalt Monolith with Urza's ability to make U, and then untap it with your infinite colorless.

• Pili-Pala and one of Grand Architect or Training Grounds or Heartstone . Grand Architect doesn't need Urza to work, as long as you have the 1 U up to make Pili-Pala Blue, you can cast Urza after you combo off for mana. The other two require Urza already on board to work.

• Nim Deathmantle and Ashnod's Altar with Urza out. you can tap the construct for a U, then sac Urza and the Construct for 2 each, to pay Nim's cost and repeat

• Any of many permutations with Ashnod's Altar / Krark-Clan Ironworks and Myr Retriever / Scrap Trawler / Junk Diver / Workshop Assistant . Don't forget to tap the creatures with Urza before you sac them. If not using the 2 CMC Myr Retriever , you may also need either Etherium Sculptor / Foundry Inspector to make you net positive mana.

Winning

• Your wincon is casting Walking Ballista for X=10 Billion, and deal 1 Million damage to each player

• If you need to, you can cast for 0 with Urza, recur from graveyard with Buried Ruin / Codex Shredder / Scrap Trawler

• Protect with Neurok Stealthsuit / Lightning Greaves / Spellskite

• If it ever gets exiled, return with Mirror of Fate . You can also use this to return cards exiled with Urza back into your library in case someone tries to make you lose by drawing from an empty library

Disruption

A full suite of countermagic is available in Pact of Negation , Flusterstorm , Swan Song , and Mana Drain .

This deck also features a few asymmetric stax pieces to slow everyone else down while you assemble the win

• Narset, Parter of Veils + Teferi's Puzzle Box for hard-lock. Opponents will only get a chance to act at instant speed, during their upkeep, with the top card of their deck.

• Karn, the Great Creator + Mycosynth Lattice for hard-lock. Opponents can't activate any abilities of permanents, including tapping lands for mana.

• Winter Orb / Static Orb / Storage Matrix / Trinisphere for soft-lock. If you use Urza to tap the first 3 on your opponents end step before your turn, they are active for everyone except you. For Trinisphere , you can tap it at any point with Urza to get around it, but then keep in mind it will also be off for one round for your opponents.

Other Fun Combos

• You can draw your deck with Mystic Forge , Sensei's Divining Top , and either Etherium Sculptor or Foundry Inspector

• Hurkyl's Recall is great to save your artifacts from mass removal, or bounce some pesky enemy stax pieces, but it can also be used in combination with Mycosynth Lattice to bounce an opponents board to hand (lands included)

• Shimmer Myr has flash, and gives flash to all your artifacts! You can often win at instant speed if someone is trying to disrupt you after you've made infinite mana. For example, if someone tries to destroy Urza after we have demonstrated infinite mana: In response, activate Urza 100 times, flash Shimmer Myr from exile, flash Walking Ballista from exile, Ballista dies, flash Codex Shredder from exile and activate it to bring Ballista to hand, cast Ballista for 10 Billion, deal 1 Million Damage to each opponent.

• Once you have infinite mana, it's a good idea to use Spine of Ish Sah with a sac outlet like Krark-Clan Ironworks , exiling all opponents permanents or Karn, the Great Creator + Mycosynth Lattice to protect your win and draw out some countermagic.
