I took this deck to a local standard tournament for my first non-kitchen table play ever. The workers were kind enough to grant me first round bye to receive my first points.
Match one: Matched against Blue White God Pharaohs Gift. Good open hands with mana dorks and steel leaf/gearhulk. Opponent did not have effective removal and conceded when Ghalta hit the board. He sideboarded in removal and I brought in artifact destruction. Game two he got a GPG on the board, I killed with Vivien, he brought back with refurbish and flew over for the win. Game 3 was close. Got him down life until he got his graveyard going. I had vivien and naturalize in hand from opening draw. He played GPG and brought back a Lyra. I played vivien and destroyed GPG. He cast out vivien. Used naturalize to regain control of vivien, destroyed Lyra then swung for lethal.
Match two: Matched against Black Red Goblin Chainwhirler. Made smart early plays (i.e. holding on to Llanowar Elves and waiting for Druid of the Cowl to avoid Chainwhirler, then protected Llanowar Elves with Clancaller and then Clancaller with Gearhulk). Very fast aggro had Ghalta out turn 5 ftw. I don't remember game two. Had some tough double block decisions against menace creature that makes monkey tokens. Ended up winning 10-0.
Match three: Agreed to draw to guarantee top 4 position.
Match four: Rematch against Blue/White GPG. Ideal starting hand. Steel Leaf Turn 2. Gearhulk turn 3. Tyrant turn 4. Game.
He sideboarded. Game two I kept opening hand with one mana and three mana dorks. Was able to draw one land and get steel leaf out plus 3 dorks but fumigate left me with two mana on the board and two gearhulks in my hand. Game over from there. Game 3 was a huge learning lesson. I new he had fumigate removal and should have just played Llanowar and Steel then slowly hit him for 5 forcing him to remove. Hand had decent stuff but I overextended. Got caught in a fumigate then got pounded by two angels. Could have won had I slowed it down and kept cards in my hand for post fumigate.
3rd place finish. 2-1-1 in matches. 5-3 in games.
Need to purchase Blossoming Defense or Heroic Intervention in response to board removal and spot removal while saving lands to cover can't lose creatures.
