Trostani, Selesnya's Voice

  • Anthems

Hello all! Welcome to a rundown of my Trostani, Selesnya's Voice token/anthem deck. It used to be a Tolsimir Wolfblood deck, but I found that I was never playing him. Rather than token swarm decks that attempt to make a bunch of small tokens and then use an Overrun effect this deck is an Enchantress deck that makes some middle-of-the-road tokens with enchantments and pumps them with anthems.

Firstly, a little about my meta and why I decided to build this deck. I have a pretty casual meta consisting of myself and whoever I can find to play with at the local store. For the most part combo and mass LD are frowned upon, but not outright banned, so I tend to avoid them. As for myself, Im a budget player. Id rather have a bunch of non-optimized decks than spend more than like $4 on a card. Any expensive card I have is either from when I was a lad and it wasnt so expensive or acquired in a draft/pack.

The reason I decided to build this deck was because I noticed that no one in my meta was running enough enchantment hate, and that I was always the one picking up the slack when it came to back-breaking enchantments. Ive run this deck a few times already and think Ive had two enchantments destroyed. Hopefully this will shake things up.

The anthems:

Ive found that static pumps are extremely powerful, but that they have to be worth the mana. Im not running Glorious Anthem or anthem of Gaea because they just dont give you the bump you need to get there. I find that the anthems that have secondary effects are most powerful: Mirari's Wake, Marshal's Anthem, and Spear of Heliod have particularly potent secondary effects. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite isnt an enchantment, but she has the added bonus of removing your opponents wee blockers. She is also extremely anti-social so make sure your playgroup is chill with her before windmill-slamming her onto the table.

The Tokens:

I find that permanent-based token production that can function at instant speed works a lot better than one-off token spells like Fungal Sprouting . Cards like Night Soil , Luminarch Ascension, and Centaur Glade are particularly helpful in this department. Heliod, God of the Sun is also quickly becoming one of my favorite token producers because he also grants them vigilance. You also cant go wrong with the landfall token producers of Emeria Angel, Retreat to Emeria, Zendikar's Roil, and Rampaging Baloths; combining any of these with Perilous Forays leads to a lot of mana, and if you have Avenger of Zendikar in play youll find it hard to lose.

The support:

All token decks need a little support, and the static pumps in this deck give it some unique ways to get it. Giving all your creatures extra power increases the change of drawing with Garruk's Packleader or Elemental Bond with Collective Blessing or Dictate of Heliod in play even a 1/1 will activate them. Increased power for tokens can also lead to huge life swings with Shamanic Revelation in addition to the draw effect. With Trostani out you'll gain a lot of incidental life, so Well of Lost Dreams is a great way to pick up some cards. As an enchantress deck you can also draw with the strategy's namesakes: Enchantress's Presence, Verduran Enchantress, Mesa Enchantress, and Eidolon of Blossoms.

With so many enchantments running around its very easy to activate Ajani's Chosen, Sigil of the Empty Throne, or find some good targets for Plea for Guidance or Silent Sentinel. There is also a nice ramp suite in here comprising some of my favorite ramp spells; I think Search for Tomorrow is underplayed and you can never go wrong with Fertile Ground or Market Festival in an enchantment based deck.

Protecting your dudes:

As with all creature based decks people will be gunning to sweep your board with their Wrath of Gods and Day of Judgments. Firstly, as long as theyre not taking care of the enchantment creating the tokens you should be fine. Secondly, Rootborn Defense is one of my favorite cards of all time, plus it gives you another token! If they are trying to take out your enchantments Sterling Grove will put a stop to that, and I think a Privileged Position would have a home here if I owned one.

Other important things:

I cannot stress the importance of Aura Shards in this deck. That card is so powerful, especially when you can activate it at instant speed. The same is true for Cathars' Crusade, if you can get a token generator online with this out youre going to have a good time. Dont forget the simple one-for-one removal with cards like Krosan Grip or Stasis Snare. Also, having like a 4/4 Sakura-Tribe Elder because of anthems is hilarious.

The basics of running the deck are pretty simple. Ramp in the early game, stick an anthem, throw out a token generator and go to town. Finish with combat damage or Overwhelming Stampede. Just added a Thunderfoot Baloth and True Conviction, so we'll see how they work out. Let me know what you think and if you know of any budget tech Im always down to try out new cards.
