  • RQ for experienced players: it's a legacy lantern control W/U which is uncommon.
  • 01/01/2022 Major addition: Vantress Gargoyle see remark below

Hi, I like trying and get new concepts into my decks so here is a not that common idea of control. I hope you'll like it.

As you are now aware by looking at the decklist, this control deck is based on handling the top of both libraries for quality advantage as well as for quality disadvantage and so incrementally putting a lock like that.

So I'll talk here only about what is not totally trivial browsing the decklist:

  • The new star of the deck: Vantress Gargoyle: as it's an artifact, you can tutor it from library to it's top, and from graveyard to library's top with Academy Ruins. It has flying so not impacted by moat, it cost nothing, inconvenient of it are totally synergic with the lantern mill control, and it can mill control! Good early blocker and late attacker, simply ideal (and in case of need there is a lifelink with the Azorius Charm)

  • Unexpectedly Absent is played for = 0

  • You can protect your own permanents by returning them back to the top (very useful to protect a key enchantment like Moat, Rest in Peace etc...)

  • You can use shuffle library effects (from fetch lands by example) as card advantage when the top of your library is visible.

NB: Booby Trap has been removed from main, it was fun and flavor but inefficient. Forgot the remarks about it if you do not use it. - You can tutor Booby Trap only to Mindshrieker it (very common way to use it) getting flying 7/7 for (you can also tutor it from your graveyard each turn with Academy Ruins on the same purpose)

  • Of course you don't need to see the top when following a return-to-top action (See core instant sorcery), either to use Codex Shredder, Mindshrieker or Booby Trap. Just to say the partial lock of this deck has degraded modes.

  • You can pipeline Mindshrieker's ability.

  • You can tutor artifact lands in case of need.

  • Mindshrieker + the lifelink of the Azorius Charm might save some games.

  • Vs massive quick aggro have a look at the very flavor side board card Pollen Lullaby

About handling the game:

Most of the time there is no need to hury in miling everything not being a land, just focus on the bottle neck of the current game, by example if you place a Moat vs an aggro let the creatures be drawn, you do not care, just remove what can break the lock :) Very commonly a deck has 3 or 4 slots (16 cards) that when removed leave not enough to achieve anything. You might have some hard time vs reanimators but keep in mind you can handle it very differently: putting back on top a big indestructible piece of meat that cannot be paid and let it there :) Your Mindshrieker might also go berserk vs those kind of high converted mana cost decks.

Enjoy!!

Any remarks are welcome.
