you need Sword of Feast and Famine for the infinate attack phase combo with Hellkite Charger you also might want to add Angel of Serenity great way to interact with your and their graveyard and moving creatures out of the way of Kaalia

Definitely took note of the Sword of Feast and Famine combo. Any thoughts on how to deal with the stack--i.e. permission and combination decks? I've seen lists running Defense Grid, but that seems like a bit of a non-bo with all the instant-speed spot removal in the deck.

as the kaalia deck you don't mess with the stack you are a combo aggro deck. the only things you need to worry about is keeping kaalia safe and beating face with cards that have board presence. The unfortunate thing is we really don't have the colors for that. The only thing you can do is really put board sweepers in and stop removal. The two cards to play to really shut them down is Iona, Shield of Emeria and Linvala, Keeper of Silence.

I really like Cauldron Dance as a weird combat trick/reload the hand for Kaalia. Works surprisingly well for me.

March 9, 2016 1:18 a.m.

I'm not sure I've ever seen Cauldron Dance before--if I have, it's been a very long time--and I don't really understand how it's supposed to work, because it seems like it's templated with outdated language. When it says "during combat" I'm guessing that means at any point during the combat step... so you could attack with whatever creatures you "flash" in with the dance?

March 10, 2016 12:41 a.m.

Pranker0 says... #9

Yes, you may attack with the creatures brought forth by Cauldron Dance.

I don't like Rakdos the Defiler in the list. While Kaalia helps get around his attack trigger once, it's still just a one shot ability. He will then just sit there for the rest of the game as attacking with him will basically mean sacrificing your lands/rocks.

Anguished Unmaking very much should have a home in the deck though. The three life is negligible compared to exiling just about anything.

Also, cut the ravnica bounce lands. They're bad. You cant play them turn one which means unless you get Sol Ring, they wreck your chances for turn two ramp which means turn three kaalia.

April 13, 2016 5:57 p.m.

Rakdos the Defiler really only needs to attack once to knock a player out of the game. He's also sac-able with High Market and can be recurred repeatedly with SoLaS and Volrath's Stronghold. The point about the bounce lands is well taken. They would be filter lands but for the price. I'm thinking City of Brass, Graven Cairns (the only filter land that isn't rape price-wise) and either a fourth Plains or another utility land.

I personally try to run both Strip Mine and Tectonic Edge in my more competitive decks.

It still feels like a lot of work for Rakdos. I guess it's ok if the initial hit is good enough.

April 13, 2016 7:45 p.m.

Why run Tectonic Edge when you could run Wasteland? Notwithstanding my general budget restraints, I do have a playset of Wastelands, but I felt like the Strip Mine was enough. The only must-kill land I can really think of off the top of my head for this deck is Maze of Ith, which can screw up things like Steel Hellkite, Master of Cruelties, Rakdos the Defiler, etc.

April 13, 2016 7:54 p.m.

I suppose I could still cast it, but what would make it better than, say, Stormbreath Dragon (seems solid in a format where a lot of people run Reliquary Tower and draw a lot of cards), Angel of Serenity, Aurelia, the Warleader or Utvara Hellkite?

April 13, 2016 8:08 p.m.

enpc says... #16

Well sure, if you have the wastelands. I just run tec edge because I don't feel like dropping the cash on Wasteland just yet (I want the promo one). Doubling the chances of hitting land removal still seems good.

Desolation Angel seems bad. Aurelia, the Warleader seems like the best replacewment. She works with Kaalia and is good by herself. I personally really like Stormbreath Dragon as well.

April 13, 2016 8:27 p.m.

If I add both Aurelia and Stormbreath, what's the next cut? Angelic Arbiter to me seems like something that's down near the cut line, as disruptive a card as it has the potential to be.

April 13, 2016 8:58 p.m.

enpc says... #18

Well the reason I like stormbreath is that it's easy to cast. You can hardcast it the turn after kaalia and it can attack then and there. While kaalia can cheat stuff into play, having the deck completely fall over because every second card in your deck has an obscene casting cost seems bad.

And raw power wise, it's only one point less damage than Arbiter and stormbreath provides built-in protection. Plus with you being the aggro deck, people won't generally be attacking as much but instead leaving up blockers.

Get thee a Righteous War. Because giving your commander immunity to 94.6% of targeted removal in the format is decent. Plus your angels being unblockable by demons and vice versa is pretty good too.

October 23, 2016 1:17 p.m.

Can you use hellkite charger's ability if it's dropped using kaalia's ability? Since it comes in already attacking would you still be able to use its ability or would you have to wait until the next time you attack with it? I think it's the latter but I could be wrong.

October 26, 2016 7:10 a.m.

No, you can't. It's included as a redundant copy of Aggravated Assault and meant to combo with Sword of Feast and Famine for unlimited attacks.

+1. Strong build. I would recommend Dragon Tempest as another source of HASTE. I think it's the most important ability in a Kaalia Deck. Weathered Wayfarer or Land Tax are good for making sure you don't miss any land drops. GOOD JOB

How well has Archangel of Strife been performing? I kinda feel that against token decks it would have negative value.

November 5, 2016 11:59 a.m.

It's situationally useful, but probably close to being on the cut line.

Rusty, thanks a lot for your massive input on my Aglophobia (Kaalia Toolbox EDH), I'll definitely think about your mana base suggestions. Your version seems way more streamlined to me, I'd think it'll make a decent figure in 1v1 Commander as well. +1 from me!

I found for my Kaalia deck that Akroma, Angel of Fury and Akroma, Angel of Wrath were both pretty lacklustre.

A couple of suggestions:

Angel of Serenity can be good for some targeted removal.

Archfiend of Depravity is good against token/aggro decks.

Dragon Mage can be great to refill your hand (and screw with other players).

Kothophed, Soul Hoarder and Harvester of Souls can be good for card draw.

Lord of the Void can be a great beater.

Scourge of the Throne for extra combat steps (though I realize it doesn't trigger if it comes in off Kaalia's ability).

Sunforger can be great to get your removal spells.

I'm not sure how many of them you'd feel would suit your deck, but they work great in my build.

November 9, 2016 11:55 p.m.

Dhominus says... #30

I feel like Sunforger isn't that good on Kaalia. In my deck, almost all of my creatures are big, scaring and threatning, so people tend to remove them as early as possible. I never get the chance to play a big creature (or cheat it onto the battlefield), equip Sunforger and use it properly. I still didn't cut it, but probably will.

Rusty,I love your deck. Thanks for the feedback on my Kallia. With time, I hope to get my build closer to what you have.

Well, you have excellent taste in Angels, I can tell you that.

May 15, 2017 11:32 p.m.

I really like Skyline Despot, also i have a kaalia deck with the same name.

June 14, 2017 12:12 a.m.

Seems like very much a conditional Utvara Hellkite, no?
