Description

This is mostly Thomas Snodgrass's Abzan Aggro deck. It curves out quickly and closes with rhinos to the face. In the event of a longer game it uses mana dorks, Souls, and Gavony to create board advantage and grind to a win. It is strong against Mid Range, Discard, and Burn. It struggles with Combo.

Feedback Appreciated

I am open to all feedback. With the help of this forum I have split my original deck into two decks Abzan Beatdown and Abzan Slow Beats. The biggest change from when I started is going heavy removal in the Main, adding some creature tech in the Side to keep the beatdown goin in the post-side games, and the addition of Gideon.

What is this "Untap" you speak of?

christ4like2l0ve "https://untap.in" is free on-line magic. Yes. You can import your list from Tappedout and just start playing--for free. Bam.

:) Glad I could help.

I'm currently testing my deck on untap as well, and also asked for opinions on reddit (DeckBuilding) regarding some of my plays. They may also be able to give you some advice.

After play testing I found that I had two decks. I have modified this deck to be straight Aggro and I will build a separate Mid Range deck. In play testing both decks do better on Untap than the previous build.

For this build I added Noble Hierarch, Dryad Militant, Qasali Pridemage, Scavenging Ooze, and Lingering Souls to the Main. The Side got tweaks, too, the most notable Thrun, the Last Troll.

Overall it does 2 less damage by turn 4 then the original Jacob Wilson build, but has many more answers. It is faster and smoother then the Emracool build I posted here, and still powerful enough to close by turn 4.

You guys got me this far! Take a look at what we've done and let me know what you think.

Same thoughts here, play Flaying Tendrils instead of Drown in Sorrow. Better against the meta.

Got stomped at the LGS. Played 3 combo decks and burn.

Counters Company was a close loss. Missed 2 plays that would have won game 3.

Boros Burn is a favorable match up. Just wasn't my night.

Soul Sister was a total blow out.

Elves was could have gone either way; not my night.

How did the deck feel though, despite how it may have seemed?

Thanks for asking christ4like2l0ve!I felt my good match ups were less good and my bad match ups no better. I think instead of overthinking my Combo match ups I just need to concede they will be tough for me and focus on beating Aggro and Mid Range. Even though last nights match ups were 75% Combo that is the exception not the rule.

I changed the build of Abzan Beatdown from what I had (Emracool's Abzan) to the version I have up now (Jacob Wilson's Abzan). I am better at piloting this which is always helpful! It's good against Aggro and a beast against Mid Range.

In the meantime I will keep practicing Abzan Slow Beats on Untap. If my LGS meta stays heavy Combo I will just bring that bad boy and I should fair much better.

@JoshFox, let me know if you ever want to play on untap, would be interested in seeing how my deck does against abzan aggro.

Btw, I would recommend cutting down on your Paths to exile, and throw in some pushes. Mix and match until you find balance. I think that 3x Leyline of Sanctity is too much since it's basically useless against combo (they can just bounce it), and against storm they have Echoing Truth. Find something against combos for that spot imho (Grafdigger's Cage and Stony Silence could also be relevant in that spot).

Untap Report

  1. Won vs Eldrazi Taxes. Super cool deck, but I just had too many threats for him to bounce them all.

  2. Loss vs Elves! Stupid elves...

  3. Won vs Red Weenie. Powered through t3 Blood Moon. Life gain and bigger creatures just too much.

  4. Won vs Blue Artifacts. Fun game. He used Ensoul and something just like it and the whole board was filled with 5/5+ artifacts and rhinos. Just kept swinging.

Getting ready for PPTQ this weekend. Removing 2 Qasali Pridemage and adding all 4 Thoughtseize to the main. Should I make room in the side for more discard?

I would still consider a Sigarda, Host of Herons, since she can protect against things like All Is Dust, Cataclysmic Gearhulk, and Liliana of the Veil. Thrun, the Last Troll still dies to that, as well as Wrath of God and Damnation and possibly Cataclysmic Gearhulk.

Got smoked at todays PPTQ. Went 1-4. My win was a bye. Only one loss was mana related. The deck just felt underpowered.

I made some adjustments for tomorrow. The biggest one is Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Ive been hesitant to play with a Planeswalker, but the bottom line is, no matter how much I say its not, this is a Midrange deck and Midrange decks benefit from walkers.

The other change is we are mainboarding removal and sideboarding discard. This gives the deck better tempo and a higher game 1 win percentage against fair decks.

I think you're over compensating in the removal now. That many removal spells leave you very open / dead cards against control and combo decks.

3x Path, 3x Push, 2x Decay with rest in sideboard should be good. And that gives you space to put some disruption back in MB. (e.g. 3x thoughtseize or the like)

2 cents.

P.S. Yeah, abzan needs walkers. I have a gideon in my SB.

Things went a little better at Sundays PPTQ: 2-3. Wins versus Abzan Midrange and Deaths Shadow. Losses versus Blue Moon, Counters Company, and Merfolk.

The good news is I beat the decks I should have beaten. Also, my losses to Blue Moon and Merfolk were 1-2 losses with major play errors. It was the first time I played these decks.

Ive played Counters before but Combo is not a good match up for me. That being said I believe I would have had a better result with more aggressive play.

My biggest learning is when pressed I need to play to my strength and beat down.

Made adjustments to the Side. Added many more creatures to give it more of a Toolbox feel. Helps me keep up the Beats even when boarding in answers.
