Introduction/Overview

MonoRed has always been my favorite color to play in Magic, mainly Burn strategies. That, however, isn't very viable in Commander (unless you play Heartless Hidetsugu, but even then it isn't that fun). And Goblins seem fairly straightforward (sorry Krenko, Mob Boss). Combo seemed somewhat... Unfair (that means Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker is out). That reduced us to just artifacts. Well luckily for me, the 2014 Commander decks were just released. I was very excited when I saw Daretti, Scrap Savant. Daretti is:

  • MonoRed

  • A Goblin Planeswalker (something I have been wanting for a LONG time)

  • Artifact-themed, and

  • A Pope!

I got the precon first thing, and you can see how the list has changed here.

This deck is primarily a toolbox deck, meaning that it is fairly adaptive to how the game is going. This is mainly because Daretti isn't much more than just a Planeswalker that can let you pitch whatever you don't want in your hand/whatever you do want in your graveyard and get Artifacts back. Even though he is just gas for the deck, he is the highest quality gas for this high-powered engine.

The 99

I'm not going to list every single card that isn't a Mountain on here, just some highlights and cards that actually do a lot for this deck. I'm not going to explain why cards like Sol Ring, Solemn Simulacrum, and Chaos Warp (even with the tuck rule change) are good.

Ichor Wellspring and Mycosynth Wellspring are essentially free card advantage. They can be great to sacrifice and get another artifact from our graveyard or can be brought back out in case you're falling behind and can help catch you up. The fact that they can be played so early in the game is a good bonus.

Howling Mine is a really good draw engine that also prevents people from coming after you. When you're done with it, you can just sacrifice it so nobody can draw cards anymore!

Darksteel Forge protects practically everything we have. It allows more control of what goes into our graveyard, which is always nice to have in this deck. It can also be cheated out early.

Reforge the Soul is amazing in this deck because it dumps a bunch of your cards into your graveyard, refills your hand, and your opponents have to deal with a brand new hand.

Bosh, Iron Golem can deal a decent amount of damage to creatures or players. Mainly used with higher CMC artifacts for efficiency reasons.

Purphoros, God of the Forge can be an all-star, oddly enough. With the amount of artifacts being exchanged from the battlefield to the graveyard (and vice versa), there's a statistical probability a decent amount will be creatures. This can allow us to wear down our opponents as the game goes along, leaving them in the kill-able range later on in the game. Definitely underrated in this deck.

Goblin Welder is likely the MVP of the deck. Quite possibly the best creature in the deck.

Insurrection is a big, dumb spell that can win us the game by stealing our opponents' boards. If all else fails, this will more than likely win the game single-handedly.

Hoarding Dragon is a fantastic tutor in our deck, fetching any artifact we want. Beware, however, it has to die for the artifact to come into our hand.

Hellkite Tyrant is also a card that should be strategically played. It can win the game, yes, but a plethora of things can happen to have it taken away or Cloned or copied. But when it works, it really works.

All Is Dust can be fantastic because it isn't that expected. Creatures can't be regenerated and it gets past indestructible, while also going after Enchantments (something Red isn't known for). Although we have to sacrifice Daretti, the amount of advantage gained is too great not to use.

Improvements

The first part of making improvements to a complete deck is deciding on what to cut from the deck first. The cards in this list are cards that either underperform in the deck or just feel like they're there just to make this a 100 card deck.

This list is the Acquireboard, or what I plan on adding to the deck once I have them:

I'm also considering playtesting Slag Fiend. It seems like it would be mediocre at best in this deck, but it definitely could have potential.
