"When one of us prospers, the pride prospers." Jazal Goldmane

Upon hearing there was a Cat tribal deck included in Commander 2017, I have been really excited to have an EDH deck in my favourite dual colours and one based around one of the coolest creature types in Magic. So, with the recent support cats got in Amonkhet block, I want to make the decklist my own.

Despite Nazahn and Mirri being excellent options, I'm keen to continue using Arahbo, Roar of the World as the commander. Part of the reason I'm really fond of the card is that despite his amazing Emminence ability, there's still incentive to cast him due to his insane other ability.

So, Arahbo gives +3/+3 to a cat every turn. Literally every turn, for no cost, no matter where he is. When he bothers to get out of the command zone, he can then give any attacking cat +X/+X and trample for only . The way I see this, he gives you all the tools to attack with at least one gigantic cat every turn and from what I've played, one is quite often enough. Due to the nature of this, it also leaves a lot of room for the equipment sub-theme from the pre-con to be utilised.

Because he can start doing his Emminence ability turn 2 if you've got a cat, I wanted to improve the deck by focusing mainly on low cost cats - many of which are commons or uncommons - that are made insane by Arahbo and allow you to start being very aggressive as soon as possible.

Mana. We want more of it. Sol Ring, Selesnya Signet, Cultivate, Kodama's Reach are the obvious ones. Due to equipment's usefulness in the deck, Sword of the Animist is awesome, buffing up a cat slightly and grabbing us a basic when it attacks. On the subject of cats, Oreskos Explorer not only grabs us plains out of the deck - even non-basic ones - but also swings for 5 on turn 2 should it take your fancy. On that note, our access to big creatures allows us to make amazing use of Traverse the Outlands. Getting this for 5 or more lands often allows you to mental the following turn.

Oh, and if you're playing , you're playing Mirari's Wake. No debate.

Now the reason we're here is because we want to smash face with fearless, ferocious felines. As I said, I believe keeping their costs low makes the best use of Arahbo, so I'll divide this section up into CMC.

1-Mana

These all allow us to attack for at least 4 on turn 2 and lets be honest, most opponents won't be able to block. Sacred Cat and Trained Caracal both do so and gain us 4 life as well. These are probably the best cards to play on turn 1, but Loam Lion - if you can get a forest, which is easy enough - and Savannah Lions will both instead swing for 5. On turn 2. Finally, I'll include Mutavault in here as well as it can be played turn-1 then attack for 5 afterwards as well. Thats all at 1-mana, although I'd possibly add more here in future.

2-Mana

As the mana-cost goes up, so does the power level. Considerably. Here we are usually swinging for 5-6, with some of the cats here being ridiculously aggressive, such as Adorned Pouncer and Fleecemane Lion, both of which are monsters on turn 2 or late game due to Eternalize and Monstrosity, respectively. Another is Initiate's Companion, a great little common that swings for 6 and untaps a land or has pseudo-vigilance when it hits.

Most of the other cats aren't as aggressive, but have amazing abilities to compensate. Hungry Lynx's ability and flavour are both hilarious, and is certainly one of the most fun cards in the deck. Leonin Arbiter is definitely one of the most powerful cats ever printed, especially as searching is so useful in commander. Due to Equipment's presence in the deck, Leonin Shikari and Sunspear Shikari provide great support for that sub-theme. Modern all-star Qasali Pridemage is equally as brilliant here, as he acts as removal and the nature of the deck makes great use of exalted as well. Finally, Watchers of the Dead is another great addition from Amonkhet that is useful if you're struggling for a particular colour of mana and also doubles up as instant speed graveyard hate.

But if you can on turn 2, for the love of god play Lost Leonin. Hits for 5 infect in turn 3, potentially finishing them off on turn 4. If you're lucky enough to play Duelist's Heritage, a player is well and truely infected on only turn 3!

3-Mana

Now we're really getting our money's worth. Brimaz, King of Oreskos is one of my favourite cards to attack with in the game, giving us tokens which we can block with or even better, Skullclamp. Giving him +3/+3 makes being aggressive with him much easier. Another great legend, Kemba, Kha Regent makes excellent use of equipment and encourages you to voltron her, as she gives you tokens as an added benefit.

To be honest, my favourite cat in here is Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist. With first strike and ability to be blocked by only one creature make her a horrible card to defend against, and acts as a fantastic form of protection as well, stopping players from large scale attacks on you when she's tapped. Overall, one of the best creatures in the deck for sure.

Making use of the tribal element, Pride Sovereign has potential to make both itself and our board very big indeed. Also from Amonkhet block, Prowling Serpopard makes sure all your cats at least enter the battlefield, and if no one has counter spells then it's still 4 power for . I've also included Qasali Ambusher as he can be a really useful surprise blocker, but mainly just because I think he's cool.

Finally at 3-Mana, Skyhunter Cub functions similarly to Leonin Shikari, with the benefit of decent evasion. Definitely a great target for Quietus Spike. The last of our cats in this section is the truly unique Stalking Leonin. Really not an aggressive creature, but you'll be thankful for it when your getting hated on due to the power you're throwing around.
