Anger Burns Eternal

We choose what holds us back. And, what moves us forward.

Yeah, yeah I know he goes infinite with Aggravated Assault. But WHAT ELSE can we do with him?

  1. Go infinite with Aggravated Assault
  2. Use the extra mana to hard cast big splashy creatures like It That Betrays
  3. Use the extra mana to cast massive "X" spells like Comet Storm and Commune with Lava

I went heavier on the creatures for my build for one reason. When it comes to burn sometimes winning the game is just a matter of sticking around long enough to be able to deal those last few points of damage. Hopefully with more creatures I will be able to stick out a longer game and not "burn" out too quickly.

Anger clouds the mind. Turned inward it is an unconquerable enemy.

So item number 1 on the list needs no real explanation. It requires a successful combat dealing 5 or more damage. Thats all.

Item number 2 makes room for a lot of cards most mono red decks wouldn't consider because of their prohibitive CMC. Dropping eldrazi spells likeArtisan of Kozilek also help red take care of pesky permanents like enchantments and such that we otherwise can't hit. Spine of Ish Sah falls into this category too though its not a creature. Hangarback Walker and Walking Ballista are also among those that mono red would normally have trouble running. However, thanks to our commander they are not only playable, they are serious threats.

Item number 3 picks up where our "X" costing creatures left off. Spells that can scale are not hard to find in red, however as of now im starting with only a couple. I don't want to get in a situation where I am stuck with a bunch of Fireball effects and can't get my commander online. Instead I chose to run more of the "hits each player" spells like Flame Rift and Slagstorm since I will usually be happy and able to cast them whenever. They are also better at politics since they are targeting everyone and not doing catastrophic damage. The small damage will add up over time and if my strategy plays out no matter who makes it to the final few, they should all be low on health.

So look outward. Anger is an energy. Unleash it.

Two cards I am hoping works out are Heat of Battle/Battle Strain and Grenzo, Havoc Raiser. The first is a cheap way to potentially ping for one or two extra damage on my attack phase that will turn into one or 2 more mana, and who knows that could make all the difference. Grenzo (if something hits) gives us cards from our opponents to cast with all of our wonderful mana.

Protecting our commander is also very important. I have included the following protection package: Magebane Armor (protects him from our own spells), General's Kabuto, Swiftfoot Boots and Dolmen Gate. Sword of War and Peace also offers some protection.

Ixalan Additions:

Captivating Crew is a fun way to spend your mana before your attack phase. Gain control of as many of your opponents creatures as you can and swing, turning their damage output into more mana for your second main.

Repeating Barrage Is just a solid burn spell that I shouldn't have trouble bringing back and recasting with all extra mana.

Vance's Blasting Cannons   is a pretty good way for a mono red deck to "draw cards". The extra card a turn should almost always be castable. We aren't even really trying to flip it, but we aren't upset if it does either. It can be three free damage a turn with Neheb in play.

Others Considered: Angrath's Marauders. Good but not better than Gratuitous Violence since I don't need the body that badly. Lightning-Rig Crew is another way to ping all opponents and MAY find its way in but its not as easily untapped for multiple uses as Thermo-Alchemist. It could potentially replace Gibbering Fiend or Firebrand Archer if the 5 toughness becomes relevant enough. And lastly Rampaging Ferocidon. I was going to add him simply for the players can't gain life clause. His ping ability doesn't help me gain mana but I think he has a place in the side board for sure. Or mainboard if I ever decide to make this build more creature light.
