Why Atraxa?

Atraxa is a strong color choice that covers the bant colors for a stax general. Grand Arbiter Augustin prevents us from playing green and black. Derevi is banned.

Atraxa offers a lot: vigilance works well with Meekstone, Stasis and Static Orb essentially giving us a free attack each turn. Lifelink helps us stabilizing against tempo decks and flying makes us able to attack each turn (most of the times). By dropping a stax piece (Tangle Wire, Stasis, Winter Orb, Static Orb), we can lock down the board while hitting each turn for 4.

In addition, her proliferate ability allows some locks with Stasis and Pentad Prism or Crystalline Crawler and makes Planeswalkers a huge threat by enabling their ultimate even faster.

Locks

The main lock in this deck is Stasis. There are a number of possible locks with this card, some of them require Atraxa on the battlefield:

  • Stasis + Teferi

  • Stasis + Garruk

  • Stasis + Sword of Feast and Famine + Atraxa

  • Stasis + Pentad Prism + Atraxa

  • Stasis + Crystalline Crawler + Atraxa

Other soft locks include Winter Orb or Static Orbs paired with the taxing permanents (Sphere, Thorn, Thalia, Lodestone) and Garruk, Sword or Teferi to break it.

Notable mentions

  • Zur, the Enchanter: Flexible tutor that can get Stasis for the lock, Siege for protection, Detention Sphere for removal, Exploration for ramp or Sylvan Library for card draw.

  • Pentad Prism: Probably the best ramp in this deck, tutored a lot on turn 1 with enlightened tutor when offered the possibility. Allows by itself a turn 3 Atraxa and additional ramp. Works incredibly well with Stasis, Winter Orb and Static Orb.

  • Parallax Wave / Parallax Tide: Very strong removal. With Atraxa on the battlefield, we can keep the enchantment on 1 and it is essentially a 4:1 removal.

  • Life from the Loam / Ramunap Excavator / Crucible of Worlds: Playing Wasteland each turn is one of the win conditions of this deck. These cards allow to attack the opponent's manabase turn by turn.

Meta choices:

  • Linvala, Keeper of Silence: Crushes Yisan and any deck playing mana dorks.
  • Trial of Ambition: Tutorable edict, especially strong against Geist decks.
  • Liliana, the last Hope: Kills mana dorks and early hitters. Her main strength is in getting the emblem very fast with Atraxa out.

See the maybe board for more meta choices and optional cards / replacements.

Exclusions due to budget / availability, requires testing:

  • Moat
  • Chains of Mephistopheles
