Welcome to Hell

B/R control excels at winning the war of attrition. The disruption generated by voluminous hand shredding, effecient kill spells, and the overwhelming power of Blood Moon adds up quickly; grinding opposing strategies into dust.

The basic goal of this deck is to trade 1-for-1 with my opponent until they're top-decking, or close. Once this happens, it becomes easy to lock them out of the game with cards like Liliana of the Veil and Blood Moon. Demigod of Revenge is my main finisher, and does a damn good job. Demigod consistently represents a 2-turn clock due to usually having another in the graveyard.

I'm constantly tuning my list to the current meta. A lot of time has been put into this, comments & upvotes are appreciated!

Current Card Choices & Explanations

  • 4 Blood Moon - The main reason to play this deck. Incredible against Modern's greedy mana bases, sometimes you just win after this has resolved.

  • 4 Faithless Looting - Synergistic card filtering. Allows me to dig for cards I need, with flashback. Also a discard outlet for extra Demigod of Revenge.

  • 4 Inquisition of Kozilek - Surgical hand strikes. Neutralize threats before your opponent has a chance to play them.

  • 2 Thoughtseize - Takes any nonland card from an opponent. The life loss is relevant, which is why I'm only playing 2.

  • 1 Duress - I'm playing this over the 3rd Thoughtseize to avoid more life loss.

  • 4 Damnation - Self explanatory. Kills almost everything.

  • 4 Fatal Push - Due to the current "big creature" meta, these are replacing Lightning Bolt. The only time this is an issue is against opposing Planeswalkers, hence Dreadbore being in the side board.

  • 2 Terminate - Kills almost everything that Fatal Push doesn't.

  • 2 Kolaghan's Command - A very powerful and versatile card, especially in a deck of this nature. Makes Faithless Looting even stronger, and also can make artifact based decks look like a joke.

  • 4 Demigod of Revenge - Sweet, sweet revenge. Whenever I cast one of these Spirit Avatars I'll usually be getting multiple on the battlefield. Discard early copies and surprise your opponent with as much as 20 damage on turn 5.

  • 1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet - With all the killing my deck does, getting value out of Kalitas doesn't take long. Great against all creature strategies.

  • 1 Pia and Kiran Nalaar - Gums up the ground, and the sky. Perfect for stabilizing.

Where is the Phyrexian Obliterator? And the Arena?

Provuk, Obliterator is one of my favorite cards, however it doesn't work well in a Blood Moon deck. Thanks for the suggestion.

Im running in my deck only basic swamps everything that can produce red mana can produce a Swamp. Like the duals if you are running Blood Crypts and Smoldering Marshs you can get full use of Lashwrithe and Mutilate.

With a Blood Moon in play, those lands would become Mountains, and would no longer count towards the cards you mentioned.

If you've been having trouble against tron and spell based combo Shadow of Doubt is worth looking at as a sideboard option. Blocking an expedition map or other tutor really does turn games around. Similarly Nightcreep in response to All Is Dust can be a blowout. I enjoy Hit if I'm running artifact removal as a response to brain decks, but all told this list looks really nice. I've tinkered with Skred b/r control, but its not as efficient even with blood moon. I'd consider Pack Rat in place of Pia and Kiran Nalaar personally, but I genuinely can't think of any other changes I would want to test. Really nice work.

I like this, but it takes until turn 4 to 6 to start running.

lagotripha, Shadow of Doubt would probably be in my board if it wasn't for the BB cost. Sometimes I don't find a second swamp before I land a Blood Moon. The Nightcreep tech is solid, luckily there is no Eldrazi Tron in my local meta, and most normal Tron decks aren't playing many, if any copies of All is Dust. I will definitely keep that in mind though. Rakdos Charm fills my artifact removal spot nicely, along with its other uses. I have played with Pack Rat in this deck, and its excellent. I play against a lot of Affinity though, and Pia and Kiran really shines in that matchup. Thanks for your suggestions and kind words.

xJonahSlayerx, like most control/midrange decks in Modern, this deck is looking to spend the early turns disrupting our opponent while sculpting our game plan. Once we do make it to turn 5+, we are usually in the drivers seat.

I think it is cool, just for myself I am a mid-range kind of guy. I think the removal is solid, have you considered running Dreadbore a little more? I guess you could just discard that players planeswalkers, but Inquisition of Kozilek doesn't really take care of the 4 or 6 mana Elspeth, Sun's Champion running around. I think more than one Dreadbore is alright for the amount of sideboard you might need, it may get the job done. ;) I Upvoted.

xJonahSlayerx I am running Dreadbore, To the Slaughter, and Thoughtseize in my side board for this reason. High CMC walkers are not very common at my LGS, so no need for them main deck. Thanks for the upvote.

archfield1, Blightning is a decent card, but Kolaghan's Command fills a similar role and is just better.

Sideboard and main deck have been revamped after a large amount of testing against the current meta. Liliana of the Veil is back in the main. Bedlam Reveler has been cut due to it being a dead card in my hand too often. Main deck changes:

-1 Liliana, the Last Hope

-2 Bedlam Reveler

-1 Kolaghan's Command

+2 Liliana of the Veil

+2 Thoughtseize

Anger of the Gods has been swapped for Damnation due to the current meta. I've also cut Temple of Malice and replaced it with a Verdant Catacombs to help guarantee I have two Swamps before I drop a Blood Moon.

I've cut Lightning Bolt entirely in favor of Fatal Push. Bolt is just not very good in the current meta, and I've literally never had to Bolt an opponent for lethal with this deck. The only issue this brings up is opposing Planeswalkers, which is why I have Dreadbore in the side.

No suggestions to make this better, great deck! Was trying to think of a way to tutor all the Demigod of Revenges and then discard 3 throughout the game and then play the last one. Any ideas for nearly guaranteeing the 20 flying turn 5?

musicman3310 I have considered this before, unfortunately the options I have with red/black are a bit too slow. If only Buried Alive was Modern legal. Thanks for the comment man.

I used to run a deck like this. The games would drag on for soooooo long.

I doubt you need 4x Damnation. I would cut it down to 2 MB at most.

I think you should add more fetches into your mana base or cut Blood Moon down to 3 MB.

Anyway you're clearly missing Koth of the Hammer, which will make your Blood Moon game plan far more effective and give you bodies to close out games much quicker.

Your sideboard could use a some work. I would personally cut the Faithless Looting all together and move some of that SB stuff into the MB.

APPLE01DOJ My LGS is filled with Bant Eldrazi, Eldrazi Tron, Jund, and all sorts of big creature decks. I used to play 3 Damnation but moved up to 4, and I won't be playing any less until my meta shifts.

Why would I play more fetches? 9 is plenty. With 9 fetches and 5 Swamps, acquiring 2 Black (which is all I need to function) is rarely a problem. This deck literally revolves around Blood Moon, without it it's just a bad imitation of Jund without Tarmogoyf. I'll continue to play 4.

Koth is definitely good, and playable in my list. However I'm happy with my threat suite, as Demigod of Revenge closes out games extremely fast and dodges most removal. Everything else is mostly to stabilize, and unfortunately Koth doesn't really protect himself or my life total.

I've tuned my sideboard to perform against my LGS and the current meta. Faithless Looting helps me find the cards I need, and lands. Without it I'd have to play 25 lands in this deck, and risk constant flooding. I appreciate your opinion and you taking the time to look at my list.

I feel like the real issue is that your reach is limited. I understand the reasoning behind people favoring IoK over Seize but truthfully I've always found Thoughtseize to be the better card. It has more value when you draw it outside your opening hand and hits things that you actually care about; High end Eldrazi, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, Scapeshift, Gurmag Angler, etc.

Fatal Push is an amazing card but you only have 2 Terminate and 3 Lilly to take care of the things it can't hit. Liliana of the Veil is also amazing but if you're facing threats who come into play bringing Eldrazi scions with them she becomes nullified quick.

I understand the reliance of Damnation but I think the underlying problem is that you need better discard and more MB removal.

If it's working for you, I'm glad. If however you're not winning as much as you could be consider swapping things around.

Another suggestion I have is how about some Ensnaring Bridge on your SB?

APPLE01DOJ You're definitely right on your evaluation of Thoughtseize. I've been considering dropping Duress for the 3rd, and this conversation has basically convinced me.

Fatal Push has been great, but as you said my current list is lacking reach mostly because of having no Lightning Bolt.

I'm going to be doing more testing and I'll change up my removal suite a bit. I'll see how things go.

Bridge isn't a great fit just because my main wincon has 5 power, and there's no way I'm keeping 5 cards in my hand with this list. Thanks again for your comment, you have given me a considerable amount to think on.
