Since the days of the conniving Ambassador Laquatus, I've always been a fan of our friends under the sea. Thankfully, Sygg, River Guide knows most of them and makes for one heck of a fun commander.

While the deck originally was an EDH-port of the constructed Fish archetype (with lots of lords and duplication effects), Sygg has been evolving into a combo control deck. So, the game plans:

Stonybrook Schoolmaster + Wanderwine Prophets = infinite turns with acceptable protection. With these folk, you just swing with the Prophets while getting the Schoolmaster tapped some how (there are a lot of options...) and profit. To find them, we have Seahunter , Vedalken AEthermage, and a bunch of draw spells. To protect them, Sygg, River Guide usually does the trick, but we also have a slew of other counters and protective equipment. For the tapping of the Schoolmaster, we have Paradise Mantle, Azami, Lady of Scrolls, and the good old Combat Phase. If the Schoolmaster isn't available, Seahunter can always rip other merfolk out of the deck to offer to the watery time gods.

Alternately, Wake Thrasher gets arbitrarily large with the untap synergies of Paradise Mantle and Puresight Merrow or anything with Freed from the Real. Grimoire Thief and Mantle/Freed can also exile all opponents' libraries.

Muddle the Mixture serves as a great do-everything card. It counters things like Cyclonic Rift and other board wipes, as well as tutors for other counters, tutors (Vedalken AEthermage & Open the Armory), protection (Azorius Guildmage, Spellskite, & Swiftfoot Boots), removal (Cyclonic Rift & Reality Shift), ramp (Coldsteel Heart, Talisman of Progress, & Azorius Signet), or combo pieces (Grimoire Thief & Puresight Merrow ). It's just a freakin' all-star. If I could run a play set in this format, I would.

Not super having many problems with Sygg at the moment...but, I'm certainly always open to feedback and suggestions.

Updates Add

Sygg has changed a lot since it was built. I adapted from Merfolk tribal aggro with incidental combo to primarily combo with minor Merfolk and Wizard synergies. With the creation of my Jenara, Asura of War deck, I have two combo decks. I try to keep a decent range of deck options, and Jenara just fills the combo role better. So, it's come time for Sygg to go. Maybe I'll rebuild the Merfolk aggro deck again some day, but I'm moving away from my fishy friends for now.
