Sideboard

For all you pyromaniacs on a budget out there, this is a Pauper Burn list which takes deviations from the stock lists in exchange for additional speed. The deck is pretty simple, you throw Lightning Bolt and similar cards at the opponent's face until they no longer have one. There's something captivating about chucking spells at your opponent's face without a care in the world, and typically leads to quick and stress free matches. The main issue with Pauper Burn is that half of the deck is filled with Legacy playable cards, but the other half usually scrapes at the bottom of the barrel for playable cards, and this deck tries to mitigate that by running cards with greater potential drawbacks but also with greater potential output. Rather than play cards like Thermo-Alchemist or Curse of the Pierced Heart mainboard this deck runs as many of the cheapest spells with the highest damage output potential rather than prepare for the long game. This deck wants to win and win quick, running cards like Spark Elemental, Shard Volley and Keldon Marauders which each do have downsides but can potentially do more damage. Spark Elemental is essentially another Bolt effect in the early turns and essential for increasing our clock and damage output, but is susceptible to blockers late game. Shard Volley is a false one drop, in that it eats a land and is not synergistic with Fireblast but is too efficient not to run a few copies. Keldon Marauders has been all but replaced in most Burn decks, but I feel this is a mistake as the there is a 2 damage floor and a 5 damage ceiling with this card, and if the opponent has removal or a blocker it typically gets in more damage and card advantage than a Thermo-Alchemist would under the same circumstances. The only card that isn't maximizing efficiency is Needle Drop which barely makes the cut due to a lack of better options. We're also not running Forgotten Cave because paying mana without dealing damage and a land entering tapped is not what this deck wants to do at all. Overall, I've had plenty of quick wins with this deck and it feels a lot better than relying on Thermo-Alchemist or Curse of the Pierced Heart to win slow games our opponent will likely win before us. A lot of decks can prepare for Burn easily in the sideboard and the prevalence of gainlands makes Burn a bit of an underdog of the format, so if you like that ultra aggressive gameplay without feeling like you're playing something overtly oppressive, this is a good deck to pick up. However, this deck in particular is faster than most Burn decks in the format and better at catching opponent's off guard and by extension, hopefully makes up for Burn's shortcomings.

In the sideboard we do run 4 Curse of the Pierced Heart for Blue Control and match ups which go into the long game, as while I overall dislike the card I do recognize it's usefulness in these match ups. Molten Rain helps against Tron, even if 3 mana is a lot to ask for out of a Burn deck. Smash to Smithereens is perfect against artifact decks, removing a threatening artifact while maintaining a good clock. Blazing Volley comes in almost exclusively against Bogles and Soul Sisters, as we don't really care about other token strategies or Delvers but do care about creatures which could potentially gain the opponent lots of life and race. Relic of Progenitus nukes graveyard decks and also cycles into more Burn, what more can you ask for? Finally, Pyroblast helps keep our Burn spells from being countered by Blue decks.
