My Black Devotion Deck. Please excuse my english since it's not my native language. This decklist is changing a lot since it's still in the testphase.
Let's first have a look at what kind of deck this is. It is clearly not the turnament winning super deck. Neither is it the 0:5 on FNM deck. For me it is a fundeck that totaly misses the metha right now and still picks up enough wins. It's kind of funny if you cast
Sanguimancy
and tell your opponent "I draw 5 cards" and he is like "ok... WHAT? can I read that card please!" However as I found
Sanguimancy
not doing a lot for my when I'm behind, it was replaced with Read the Bones for testing reasons.
The only one drop is Bloodsoaked Champion to provide some pressure early, keep my opponent at bay and my devotion up. Since it respawnes again and again it suits this deck pretty well.
Since the deck shall provide some pressure early I added Master of the Feast. 5/5 flying on turn 3... That can decide games. If things go myway, I will drop Liliana Vess on turn 5 and keep my opponent discarding, negating the disadvantage given by Master of the Feast.
I hope to use the
Brain Maggot
to exile removals and big threats from my opponents hand. I'm worried about removals because I like my Master of the Feast. Even if I grab a big threat with my maggot, my opponent might still use a later drawn removal to remove the maggot and let the master be.
Drop Squelching Leeches or Erebos, God of the Dead on turn 4 to keep the pressure up. Squelching Leeches is a heavy hitter who get's even stronger every landdrop. But most of the time he will kiss a removalspell or get chunkblocked. The last one isn't that bad since he still keeps my devotion up. Erebos, God of the Dead isn't providing much devotion, but he makes use of it. 5/7 indistructable... That might worry some opponents. In addition he shuts down any lifegain and gives me the chance to draw cards if I miss to draw
Sanguimancy
or fail to build up devotion.
The core card in this deck is Gray Merchant of Asphodel (like in any black devotion decks). It shall be used to provide big lifeswings in my favour and use that life to draw massive cards with
Sanguimancy
. With big creatures on board and a serious card advantage we should do quite well most of the time.
To prevent to get short on life if we don't draw Gray Merchant of Asphodel and want to use
Sanguimancy
nonetheless we find Whip of Erebos fitting the deck perfectly. It brings back Master of the Feast or Squelching Leeches to finish along side Gray Merchant of Asphodel in the later stage of the game.
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is our way to make use of our cardadvantage.
Bile Blight and Hero's Downfall shall care about the things that
Brain Maggot
failes to remove, keep the board relatively clean and prevent most kinds of spam or deathtouch problems.
The great winning condition Abhorrent Overlord who fills the sky with tons of flying 1/1 tokens was replaced by Liliana Vess. I felt like he is somewhat of a "win more"-card. After multiple games he never was the card that decided anything. Lilina whatsoever is a really nice addition. Clearing the path for our Master of the Feast and tutoring whatever we need. It can tutor the master himselfe, the Gray Merchant of Asphodel or the Whip of Erebos. It's kind of mean to have whatever you need, whenever you need it.
An example scenario:
T1: Bloodsoaked Champion, T2:
Brain Maggot
, T3: Master of the Feast, T4: Squelching Leeches, T5: Gray Merchant of Asphodel => 8 Damage + 8 Lifegain + A nicely filled board
I would like to hear any kind of criticism or suggestions.
