Maybeboard

Synopsis

If you are into alternate win conditions or need a deck to punish certain people in your play group for their various transgressions, then look no further. The idea did not start because of Riku of Two Reflections, but because of the uniqueness of cards like Leveler, Eater of Days, Chronatog, Wormfang Manta, Chronatog Totem, Magosi, the Waterveil, which I wanted to try to turn their negative ability into a positive.

  • I use the MAYBEBOARD as a way to keep a running list of cards that have been in the deck before, but I have taken out.
  • Typically avoid using Cyclonic Rift in my casual decks as it is too easy of a win.

How to Pilot the Deck

The main win condition revolves around Leveler and using Reroute, Willbender, Bolt Bend to redirect it to others or using it on yourself with Jace, Wielder of Mysteries out. It can be a very linear deck, so hope that your opponent doesn’t have a way to exile it. To compensate for having a limited supply of Leveler, we use cards that can copy it and will still give us the ETB trigger - Phantasmal Image, Phyrexian Metamorph, Cackling Counterpart, or Dance of Many.

You can also use cards like Eater of Days, Chronatog, Wormfang Manta, Chronatog Totem, or Magosi, the Waterveil to punish your opponents.

Win Conditions

Leveler + Jace, Wielder of Mysteries -

Leveler + Reroute or Willbender or Bolt Bend

Banefire + Repeated Reverberation + critical mass of mana -

Banefire + critical mass of mana + copy spell

Interaction Notes

  • Willbender can be played for its morph cost and the copy will also be played face down.
  • Muddle the Mixture if you pay the transmute cost and copy it, you will copy the transmute affect.

Pitfalls

When it comes to winning you need to be able to cast multiple spells in one turn, which requires a lot of mana. That is why we need cards like Mana Reflection, Turnabout, Doubling Cube and the usual green ramp package with Cultivate, Farseek, Rampant Growth, Kodama's Reach, Explosive Vegetation to get us the mana needed.

Being limited with the number of redirect spells, we need a graveyard recovery package in Regrowth, Recollect, or Narset's Reversal.

People will argue this runs into the same issue as extra turn decks, where you are the only person playing magic which isn’t fun for others. While this is technically true, setting up this combo is much more complex and deserves the power of having someone not play magic, compared to paying 5 mana for a Temporal Manipulation or a Time Warp. It would be unfair to hate on this as much as the run of the mill extra turn deck, when this only has one extra turn spell; and a horrible one at that - Wormfang Manta.
