First showing at Modern night takes 4/1 —Aug. 30, 2018

So I took it to my LGS Modern tournament and faced quite a diverse crowd. Doing pretty well all night, I end up losing to Mill game 4.

Dimir Faerie Tempo. They lose game 1 from burn, fliers and self Bitterblossom damage. Izzet Staticaster made an appearance game 2, wrecking their bitterblossom strategy. 2/0

Izzet Storm. Best of 3. Stormed off on me game one.

Sided game 2:

  • -2 jace
  • -1 Grim Lavamancer
  • -1 Adeliz
  • +2 Wizard's Retort
  • +2 Tormod's Crypt. Win by aggro and counter magic where needed in both games following.

Rakdos Hollow One. Ended up being able to fly over most of his stuff game 1. They got a great early game g2 but game 3 I was able to use my sided Smash to Smithereens and more Wizard's Retort and took the match.

Dimir Mill. Overran them game 1. Got milled out the next two games. Mill + Surgical/Expirtate is pretty feels bad. My loss.

Jund Midrange. I was able to get a really solid early turns game 1. Delver transformed turn 2 + Stormchaser. Turns later I just burned and swung. game 2 brought in tormod's, more counter magic for another solid victory!

4/1 overall is not so bad and I had a ton of fun seeing Adeliz Pump my Wizards for kills. Going to try and refine it further. I have been thinking about running Learn from the Past in the sideboard for mill. Anyone have any suggestions on this?

Good job! I made a wizard tribal list a while back somewhat like this. Casual Wizard Tribal (ish). Stormchaser Mage has been an all-star with Adeliz (but you’re already running him), and Sage of Epityr has psuedo-Ponder built in and gets buffed. However, possibly the best wizard in my deck is Wee Dragonauts. +3/+1 is not something to be trifled with! The dragonnauts have gotten me turn 4 wins a few times.

DMFF says... #2

Wee Dragonauts is an interesting thing to ponder, but I do enjoy having my curve a bit lower. Stormchaser Mage has been one of my favorite Izzet creatures for a while so I chose him over the Faerie Wizard. He's been in a good number of my Izzet decks so it just felt right to include him in this one. He's been pulling his weight in this deck greatly!

I plan on taking this to my LGS this week since it was finished after last weeks tournament. Will give updates on how this places!

Alright. Wee Dragonauts can be a little slow, with a higher mana cost and no haste. And I can totally see how Stormchaser Mage would be pulling his weight. He’s great! Well, Good luck on the tournament!
