Standard Lifegain Midrange WB (Orzhov)

SkyCake

Sideboard

Orzhov midrange with a lifegain sub-theme. Laugh in the face of your enemy as you drop huge threats each turn while gaining gobs of life back.

The Curve

While light in the way of 1-drops, Bloodsoaked Champion is a great opener who just keeps coming back for more. Putting pressure on your opponents early can gives us the time we need to build our resources without simply dropping lands.

While the Champ swings in on turn two, we can put up the mother of all walls in standard- Nyx-Fleece Ram. Know what this bundle of fluff stops? Siege Rhino. Fleecemane Lion. T3/T4 Savage Knuckleblade. Oh, and you gain life back every turn he's out (sorry I'm not sorry burn decks). This consistent lifegain also synergizes well with our other 2-Drop, Ajani's Pridemate. With the amount of additional lifegain in this deck, an early Pridemate only gets more deadly the longer he sticks around.

This is where the deck really starts to kick off. We have a number of options at this point depending on the board-state and your hand. Usually Brimaz, King of Oreskos is hitting the table, but Herald of Torment is also respectable. By Turn 4 we can start dropping our planeswalkers, Ajani Steadfast and Sorin, Solemn Visitor. Both their +1s give lifelink, potentially pumping Pridemate further, and Ajani's second ability lets you permanently pump your team while giving Sorin the opportunity to Ultimate the second turn he's in play.

Lastly, we can't forget our divine ferryman, Athreos, God of Passage. While only a 2-of in the deck, once out he can guide our dearly departed back to our hand or Lightning Bolt our opponents face. Turning him on is not very difficult either, with no lack of 2 devotion permanents.

By now our boardstate should be poised to finish the game on its own, but why stop there? Whether you need that extra something to force through damage or you're just a sadist you finds nourishment in the tears of your enemy, Wingmate Roc and Elspeth, Sun's Champion will give you the edge needed to close the game. Both incredible threats in their own right, paired with the rest of our creature-base they become a nightmare to deal with.

Remaining Spellbase

You'll find the standard compliment of removal here: Hero's Downfall and Utter End deal with almost any threat you'll come across while Read the Bones lets us refill our hand in a tight spot.

~Sideboard~

Agent of Erebos: Comes in against delve and whip decks who like to interact with their graveyards.

Bile Blight + End Hostilities : Package deal for token and aggro decks.

Erase: Supplements utter end in dealing with Ascendancy and useful against Whip/Constellation as well.

Erebos, God of the Dead : For any decks that rely on lifegain too much. Also a useful companion with read the bones in control matchups so we can reload our hand.

Soldier of the Pantheon: Replaces two Champs for multi-color heavy decks.

Soul of Innistrad : Good for hate and control decks to give us a way to get back creatures in our yard.

Thoughtseize: We're running black, of course thoughtseize is here.

Thank you for the look, +1s, and comments. Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Finally got a chance to try the deck out in paper and boy did it impress. Here's the rundown for the night:

*Note I was running the original list with Bloodsoaked Champion, no Spear of Heliod, and Soldier of the Pantheon in the sideboard.

Round 1: I had the bye... great.

Round 2 : My opponent had fairly standard list for this archetype full of Doomwake Giant, Hornet Queen, and of course Whip of Erebos. These games can get very dragged out considering the amount of lifegain in both these decks but luckily I closed out game 1 with an attack with Athreos, God of Passage that my opponent forgot was active.

Post board I feel my deck gets a lot better in this match-up. I brought in Bile Blight for the hornet queen, a copy of Erase for extra removal, and my favorite, Erebos, God of the Dead to halt their lifegain. And what do ya know, I didn't draw any of them except the erase. I did end up getting sorin to ultimate but, through some early misplays and missed Ajani's Pridemate triggers, when time was called on the round he was sitting at an absurd 50 life to my 26.

We drew, but because I had the win in game 1, the match went to me.

Round 3 : The usual mana dorks and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx were present here, though some unusual standouts in Prophet of Kruphix and Colossus of Akros made an appearance. Game 1 I kept a hand a should have mulliganed and was missing double W mana on turn 3. He had a good curve with turn 3 Polukranos, World Eater into turn 4 Arbor Colossus quickly mopping up what creatures I had.

Games 2 and 3 were pretty straight-forward wins. I had some timely removal for his colossus and Nylea, God of the Hunt and all of my planeswalkers were able to join the party, quickly overwhelming the board.

Finals : Now this is something I thought I'd never see in Standard. My opponent actually put together a successful morph/flash deck and boy was it fun to play against. Full of Icefeather Aven, Sagu Mauler, Surrak Dragonclaw, and Boon Satyr, the deck also used more counterspell back-up than I was expecting.

Game 1 I barely pulled out the win. My life went up to the lower 30s and then all the way back down to 9 before I took it on the wings of Herald of Torment who was able to fly over his defense. A quick sideboard and I was pretty confident going into game 2.

Annndd I spoke too soon. Got stuck on 3 lands the whole game and an accelerated Savage Knuckleblade and Surrak lead me to scoop very quickly.

Didn't need to board again considering, but I had brought in End Hostilities as it's my only answer to Sagu Mauler and Soldier of the Pantheon for everything else. Surprisingly I was able to get the soldier out but there were no threats he needed to stop. Brimaz, King of Oreskos and Sorin, Solemn Visitor did enough work to take the game.
