Maybeboard

Overview

From my first commander deck to optimized? ITS BEAUTIFUL! Anyways, welcome to my Meren Stax build! While not cEDH level (though it can be if I didn't run out of money), this deck is a ton of fun to play, constantly fishing stuff out of the yard, only to put it back there within the same turn.

TLDR Stats

Tier: 2 (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/list-multiplayer-edh-generals-by-tier/)

Archetype: Stax/Combo

Theme: Lockdown; Infect; GY recursion

Win Cons: Mike 'n Trike/Ball

The deck wins and is centered around the legendary Birthing Pod , sacrificing creatures for bigger and better ones. We have a ton of tutors in the deck to get it consistently, and a plethora of card draw to draw into it, or a tutor!

Cards needed: Mikaeus, the Unhallowed , Sac outlet, Triskelion or Walking Ballista

  1. Use the sac outlet to sacrifice tri or ball while Mike is on the field

  2. Mike's effect will trigger and bring the sacrifice back from the field with a +1/+1 counter.

  3. remove the counter to deal 1 damage to a player.

  4. Trike or ball will come back since the +1/+1 counter was removed.

  5. Repeat the process until everyone dies

*Graveyard is your hand: Having the yard function as an extension your hand is amazing for any deck. This essentially forces your opponents to exile your things if they want to permanently remove them from the game.

*Fast: The deck ramps out very well and the play is very linear, leading to relatively quick turns and interaction.

*Easily modified: Meren is great in that she can be adapted to fit any play group! Looking for cEDH? Put Mike n Trike with Hulk combos! Looking for casual? Put some huge creatures in and swing! Want a mix of both? Put whatever you want in! A lot of commanders don't have this versatility, and are typically forced to either all out competitive Grand Arbiter Augustin IV or straight casual food Gishath, Sun's Avatar . Meren has the luxury of both styles

*Draws a ton of hate: As a stax deck, you will learn that the board will turn on you due to your stax effects. More often than not, you will be playing 3 v 1 simply due to Meren's ability to rebound from wipes and counters. It's a testament to the power level of the deck, but you'll need to anticipate how the board will react to the cards you play.

*GY hate: As with any graveyard strategy, yard hate completely shuts this deck down. Anything from Rest in Peace to Grafdigger's Cage will severely alter Meren's strategy, which isn't good for the Meren player.

*Long games: While the deck does get off to a fast start, the length of games can go long if players respond to your threats correctly. The engine gets turned on very quickly, but the win cons may take a while to get if you don't draw into tutors or Pod.
