Hazezon Tamar

Commander / EDH*

klove85

I first saw Hazezon Tamar played a little while back at my local game store and was curious about him. At first glance he seemed like just another horrible expensive legendary from Legends. Why play something that expensive with so many restrictions? Aren't there better Naya generals? While that deck didn't do much of anything, it got me thinking, and the deeper I went, the more janky his playstyle seems to be. If there's one thing I love, it's definitely playing weird things and janky combos, so I decided to build a Hazezon of my own.

This deck has 3 goals:

  1. Drop as much land as possible, as quickly as possible. Mana ramp does nothing for Hazezon's ETB trigger, so no mana doublers in this deck. Just straight up land that I can tutor for, which is why I'm primarily running basics.
  2. Abuse Hazezon's ETB trigger. I want him to ETB as much as possible in one turn and put him back in the command zone before my next upkeep.
  3. Go bonkers with tokens. Token doublers, buffs, and ETB damage effects to get the most value out of them.

Wincons in this deck include straight up aggro strategies with the tokens or pinging everyone to death when they ETB.

To that end, I've broken my deck down into a few categorizes and am always looking for more/better options.

Land Ramp

ETB Abuse

  • Strionic Resonator: for a copy of Hazezon's trigger? Why not!
  • Minion Reflector: for a copy of Hazezon (and his trigger) that ensures neither is around for the next turn.
  • Conjurer's Closet: Another free Flicker, especially with another sac outlet on the board.
  • Flicker: . Seeing the trend yet? 2 mana for yet another activation of Hazezon's trigger.
  • Cloudshift: Just for another 7+ Sand Warrior tokens is the definition of value

Sac Outlets

  • City of Shadows: Just another sac outlet for Hazezon.
  • High Market: Sacrifice Hazezon for 1 life? Sure!
  • Ashnod's Altar: Has helped pay the commander tax to recast Hazezon and also provides a way to remove him before the tokens land.
  • Evolutionary Leap: Gets me a creature in hand to help with the Craterhoof or Lovisa lottery that I'll need to close the game out when the tokens ETB.
  • Feed the Pack: Sacrificing Hazezon nets me a few wolf tokens. Can do wonders with a buffed Sand Warrior as well if I wasn't able to win the turn they ETB.
  • Goblin Bombardment: Cheap way to get rid of Hazezon and give someone the finger at the same time. Also used to close out the game after swinging with the tokens.
  • Oblivion Ring: Certainly not ideal, but it can take Hazezon out of play if need be. And if someone destroys it, he still reenters the battlefield, hitting another trigger.
  • Perilous Forays: Sac outlet +free land? Why not?!

Token Synergy

General Shenanigans

  • Shields of Velis Vel: For just one extra , Hazezon becomes a targeted board wipe for your opponent when he gets sacrificed.
  • Vicious Shadows: Punish the blue player for his massive hand. Or really just anyone once the tokens hit the board with a repeatable sac outlet.
  • Warstorm Surge: A more expensive Purphoros that is REALLY going to hurt with any of the buffs out.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge: Pinging everyone for at least 14 when the tokens hit seems like a good thing.
  • Pandemonium: Potentially bonkers in this deck with some of the token buffs out, but also a potential backfire on me as well. Considering swapping this out for Impact Tremors.
