Modern Elves. Elves have been a fascination for me and after reading izzetmage's post over at MTGSalvation I was excited to build something that worked with that combo: Cloudstone Curio + Heritage Druid + Nettle Sentinel .

izzetmage's article TL:DR? Long story short I can use this combo to proc ETB effects indefinitely and/or generate 72 billion mana.

The idea behind this deck's engine is to utilize recursive loops on life gain with Essence Warden and card draw with Elvish Visionary eventually playing and killing with Craterhoof Behemoth. It can also manufacture any amount of mana with the combo plus any 1-CMC elf to infinitely pump Ezuri, Renegade Leader.

It utilizes lots of mana ramp with 8 mana dorks and Elvish Archdruid and can use that mana, in absence of combo pieces, to pump Joraga Warcaller for big swings and beat down. Search up combo pieces or Win-Con's with Summoner's Pact and Chord of Calling, or maybe just your Reclamation Sage for those pesky Chalice of the Void.

Posting here has helped my organize what I still need to acquire for the deck as well as plan out possible sideboard options. I know there quite a few people out there playing this sort of deck albeit with tweaks and preference changes, but if there is any feedback to be had please let me know. I'd also be happy to take a look at whatever list you may have for your elves and offer criticism/ideas.

Notes:

  • I do fully intend to add 4 Summoner's Pact to this listing as soon as I get them.

  • I'm considering dropping a few lands; 18 seems to flood me a bit. I find myself in more situations where I'm drawing a land on not needing it than drawing a spell and needing a land. I have dropped to 16 lands. Currently testing.

  • This deck used to make use of Glimpse of Nature before it was banned. I've considered splashing blue for Beck or including Soul of the Harvest in the decklist to mimic this effect. perhaps this would bog the deck down or simply be a win-more and thus unneeded. If anyone has input on this particular point please post!

UPDATE 1

Out of ~40 participants at FNM I took 10th (3-1-1). Beat Infect, RDW, and Mill, Lost to control in g3 to a misplay on my part. Tied RDW. g3 ran out of time; I was positioned likey to lose. (Slow RDW, yeah I know... Apparently running 12 land destruction is a thing. -.-)

UPDATE 2

After more testing I have finally decided 18 lands is too many. 16 plays surprisingly well so far. Changing to 16 and subbing in two Arbor Elf. May use Priest of Titania here instead.
